Musée du Louvre, Paris
Annual Visitors: 9,334,000
The world’s largest museum is both the subject of ongoing architectural controversy—not everyone agrees with the 1989 addition of I. M. Pei’s 69-foot-high glass pyramid entrance—and an art-lover’s wonderland of some 35,000 masterworks. Throngs parade through the former 12th-century palace to see such famous highlights as Leonardo da Vinci’s smiling La Gioconda, a.k.a. Mona Lisa—a painting that, rumor has it, was originally commissioned by François I to hang in his château at Fontainebleau.
It is a lovely photo but it always seemed strange to me that they have that glass pyramid on such a beautiful old building. I would have thought it better to have it as a stand alone building or part of a more modern museum. Yes, it is iconic but to me it will always look out of place.
Some like it and many don’t. Can’t please everyone. 🙂
I do LUFFS the mix of the old and new, butt, what I WANTS more than anything is to go over there on the Eurostar and visit it….if only they let Princess Pups on the train sigh
Loves and licky kisses
Princess Leah xxx
I do too. I would love to visit too. 🙂
I think most of those 9 million visitors were there on the day I wanted to visit. At least that’s what it felt like.
I’m guessing it’s like that most days. 🙂
The pyramid does look out of place in front of that amazing old building
Yes it does, but if we all think of it as a piece of art then it’s not as bad. 🙂
When we looked at the picture, we didn’t noticed the piramide in the first place, I think we saw right through it…MOL 😀 It’s a beautiful place, it doesn’t need a pyramide at all 😺 Pawkisses for a Happy Wordless Wednesday 🐾😽💞
Well there you have it. It does look out of place there, but it’s a piece of art too. 🙂
I louvre it heheh! I like all the old buildings they are fab to look at and the history behind them 🙂
Have a frenchtastic WWS ➡
I agree, Steve. You’re not that far away. For me it would be some major traveling. 🙂
I would love to return on a family trip with all of my kids. I don’t mind the pyramid. I.M. Pei did the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame building too, which looks like one big pyramid in part. I like that too. 🙂
Your kids would love this almost as much as you would love treating them to this wonderful experience. 🙂
Sandee,
The du Louvre is an amazing place! The closest I’ll get to this place is my iPad app. 🙂 Thanks for hosting the mid-week fun!
That makes too of us, Cathy. Oh well. 🙂
The Dad thinks that would be a fun place to explore!
I sure your dad is spot on about this. 🙂
We really enjoyed the Louvre when we visited in person. The pyramid did seem a bit odd, but in person, I kind of felt like “it worked.” 🙂
Sandee, thank you for sharing this great, memory sparking photo. And thank you for hosting! Have a great Wednesday!
I’m glad it brought back good memories. Sometimes I do these because they are places I’d like to visit. 🙂
I have to say, the museum looks cool, and the pyramid looks super cool, but they do not go together. Last time my mom was at that museum the pyramid was not there.
I don’t think they go together either, but no one asked me. It’s what it is. 🙂
The mix of old and modern looks good. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day! XO
If some folks are doing the contrast. You have a great day too and it’s my honor to host. 🙂
That is beautiful. The pyramid is amazing. 69′ of glass
Hugs Cecilia
Yes it is. A masterpiece for sure. Hugs back. 🙂
Meower Ms. Sandee. I didn’t see the linky tools, but my blog (a info-graphic for gardeners – that’s my focus at the moment) is at https://purrseidon.wordpress.com/2019/02/06/wordless-wednesday-106/
Purrseidon
Never mind… I posted the original comment and poof! there was the linky bar. Just like magic!!!
Happy day & hope you have a purrfect humpday.
Purrseidon
Roger that. I’ll never mind. You have a purrfect hump day too. 🙂
It’s there. I promise it’s there. 🙂
Interesting!! Have a great day, Sandee!! ((Hugs))
You have a great day too, Michelle. Hugs back. 🙂
That is interesting that they put that modern building right there by the museum. I guess a little mixture of old and new is all right. Sandee, you and Zane have an amazing day.
I think it’s all right too, Marg. You have an amazing day too. 🙂
I am one of those not in agreement with the 1989 addition of I. M. Pei’s 69-foot-high glass pyramid entrance at the Louvre. I would’ve much preferred a cube 😉
Of course you would. I have to agree. 🙂
It’s time to throw stones.
Goodness, Kismet. You made me laugh out loud. 🙂
Another amazing photo of divine architecture ~ ^^ Xox to you from Z and C ^^
Happy Day to you,

Yes, I feel the very same way. Happy day to you and Ms. Zoe. xoxo
The pyramid is a stunning structure but seems out of place against the existing old building. But, then I guess it’s another one of those “art is in the eye of the beholder” things. Happy Wednesday!
Art is in the eye of the beholder and often I’ve not a clue what their piece is trying to portray. 🙂
Yep, I agree.
Blending the old with the new takes genius and creativity. To me this blend does not work but they don’t care much what I think.
Yes it does and that’s something I don’t have. I know no one cares what I think either. 🙂
I suppose that if the Pei addition appeared to be physically attached to the original structure then it would be appropriate to more closely match the existing facade. However, if you view the glass pyramid as simply the largest outdoor sculpture at the museum it is a little easier to understand. Personally, I would rather see this complete departure of style than to try to match the existing masterpiece and fall woefully short. Have a blessed day.
You have a very good point here. I always knew you were very smart. 🙂
I would love to visit The Louvre, and walk in the steps of Tom Hanks, from “The DaVinci Code” movie!
Me too, me too. Happy Wednesday. 🙂
The pyramid is kinda incongruous. Oh well, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
Happy WW, Sandee!
Yes, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 🙂
The modern building does not blend in well with the old buildings.
I wouldn’t think so either, but wasn’t in charge. Sometimes you never quite know the why. 🙂
I didn’t like the glass pyramid at first, but I have come to like it as a modern contrast to the classic old building.
It’s all in ones perspective. Thanks for weighing in. 🙂
It seems out of place, to me. When we visited The Louvre in 1966, it wasn’t there and looked much better without it. Happy #WW to you. Thanks for hosting this link party!
I’m thinking I would like to see it someplace other than here too. Takes away from the history. You’re most welcome for the hosting. 🙂
Each time I see this place it reminds me of The Da Vinci Code movie. I love the book and was excited to watch the movie. Am glad it didn’t disappoint.
Good for you. When something doesn’t disappoint it’s a very good thing. Happy Wednesday. 🙂
Happy Wednesday! <3
I’m sure the glass pyramid looks awesome in person, but to me it doesn’t look right in that setting with the old traditional buildings.
I know, but I’d love to see both. 🙂
It’s such an impressive place! While the pyramid is pretty cool, I also feel it just doesn’t fit in with the old building.
I wonder how long it takes to actually see everything in there?
It appears never. It’s huge and I’m sure they change some things often. 🙂
Such an incredible place. I wonder how long it would take to look around all of the masterpieces, you could be in there for hours and never fully appreciate the beauty. I actually quite like the pyramid, though I can see why some find it too contemporary and ill-fitting. x
Some folks claim you can never see everything. That may be true. Have a great day, Caz. 🙂
i love Paris!
I’ve never been, but I’d love to visit here. 🙂
I didn’t check but I think that I. M. Pei is also the architect who designed the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. It’s a pyramid just like the one featured above! Have a great day! xxoxoxo
You are correct about that. He did do the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. 🙂
I liked the Louvre better before that pyramid was put there! But- that doesn’t keep me from going in and seeing my favorite sculpture- The Winged Victory!
I would think it would detract from the original building. Some love it and some hate it. 🙂
A very lovely photo. Thanks for sharing it. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
I hope you have a wonderful week too, Patrick. Thanks for linking up. 🙂
We 💗 rulebreakers! Lovely image.
We do too. They make the world go around. 🙂
Beautiful place and skyline. Joined the hop. I registered under WordPress already. Why do I have to register again? Let me know please.
I think it’s because the new plugin comment luv. It’s all good. 🙂
Wow 😳 that place is freaking huge. I would LOVE to walk (well get pushed) through this museum, that would be awesome I think. I would love to have the money just to go see it, lol! Have a wonderful day Sandee. Love you bunches ❤
I’ll push you and we can enjoy all the sights. Love you bunches too, honey. 🙂
Oh boy, if walls could talk is what I always say!!! WOW! What a place to see & what I wouldn’t give to see it! If I lived there I would spend a lifetime in this place seeing it every day and I’m sure I still wouldn’t have seen everything. Awesome & thanks for sharing! Hope all your dreams come true & that you’re having a wonderful day my friend! Hugs & love U lots!!!!
I know, I’m coming with you at least once a week and I’ll spring for lunch or dinner. Love you back, Marie. 🙂
Eh…I can take it or louvre it…Seymour is face palming
You crack me up and you know I’m very biased where Seymour is concerned. 🙂
It is a huge and impressive place, all right. No matter how much time you spend there, there is more to see.
I would love to spend a lot of time there. 🙂
You…..a rule breaker??? HAHA
Yes, I’m a rule breaker. I like it too. 🙂
I’ve not seen it from that angle before. Pretty big place!
Hope you had a fabulous weekend boating!
We’re heading to the boat this afternoon. So, we’ll be boating this weekend. We didn’t go last weekend because of high winds and rain. This weekend it’s just rain. Oh well. Scritches to all your babes. 🙂
We were there years ago. I’d love to visit again at some point. I have to confess that I’m not crazy about the pyramid.
Mixed reviews here. Some like it and others don’t. I would just love to go see all of this for myself. 🙂
The addition does seem very inconsistent with the rest of the architecture. But, it does serve as a conversation starter! I’d love to spend the day (or four) wandering through the halls of this museum and soaking up the art culture!
I’ll come with you and we’ll explore together. 🙂
When I went about a million years ago, the workers were on strike and I didn’t get in 🙁 So this year in April when Sam and I head there that is first on my list!
Good for the both of you. We want pictures. 🙂
I’d love to go to the Louvre some day.
I would too. What a delight that would be. 🙂
I’ll meet you outside for an espresso and we can tour together.
Okay, you’re on. 🙂
