The world’s largest museum is both the subject of ongoing architectural controversy—not everyone agrees with the 1989 addition of I. M. Pei’s 69-foot-high glass pyramid entrance—and an art-lover’s wonderland of some 35,000 masterworks. Throngs parade through the former 12th-century palace to see such famous highlights as Leonardo da Vinci’s smiling La Gioconda, a.k.a. Mona Lisa—a painting that, rumor has it, was originally commissioned by François I to hang in his château at Fontainebleau.
It is a lovely photo but it always seemed strange to me that they have that glass pyramid on such a beautiful old building. I would have thought it better to have it as a stand alone building or part of a more modern museum. Yes, it is iconic but to me it will always look out of place.
Some like it and many don’t. Can’t please everyone. 🙂
I do LUFFS the mix of the old and new, butt, what I WANTS more than anything is to go over there on the Eurostar and visit it….if only they let Princess Pups on the train sigh

I think most of those 9 million visitors were there on the day I wanted to visit. At least that’s what it felt like.

The pyramid does look out of place in front of that amazing old building

When we looked at the picture, we didn’t noticed the piramide in the first place, I think we saw right through it…MOL 😀 It’s a beautiful place, it doesn’t need a pyramide at all 😺 Pawkisses for a Happy Wordless Wednesday 🐾😽💞

I would love to return on a family trip with all of my kids. I don’t mind the pyramid. I.M. Pei did the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame building too, which looks like one big pyramid in part. I like that too. 🙂

We really enjoyed the Louvre when we visited in person. The pyramid did seem a bit odd, but in person, I kind of felt like “it worked.” 🙂

I have to say, the museum looks cool, and the pyramid looks super cool, but they do not go together. Last time my mom was at that museum the pyramid was not there.

The pyramid is a stunning structure but seems out of place against the existing old building. But, then I guess it’s another one of those “art is in the eye of the beholder” things. Happy Wednesday!

I suppose that if the Pei addition appeared to be physically attached to the original structure then it would be appropriate to more closely match the existing facade. However, if you view the glass pyramid as simply the largest outdoor sculpture at the museum it is a little easier to understand. Personally, I would rather see this complete departure of style than to try to match the existing masterpiece and fall woefully short. Have a blessed day.

The modern building does not blend in well with the old buildings.
I wouldn’t think so either, but wasn’t in charge. Sometimes you never quite know the why. 🙂
I didn’t like the glass pyramid at first, but I have come to like it as a modern contrast to the classic old building.

Each time I see this place it reminds me of The Da Vinci Code movie. I love the book and was excited to watch the movie. Am glad it didn’t disappoint.

It’s such an impressive place! While the pyramid is pretty cool, I also feel it just doesn’t fit in with the old building.
I wonder how long it takes to actually see everything in there?
It appears never. It’s huge and I’m sure they change some things often. 🙂
Such an incredible place. I wonder how long it would take to look around all of the masterpieces, you could be in there for hours and never fully appreciate the beauty. I actually quite like the pyramid, though I can see why some find it too contemporary and ill-fitting. x

I liked the Louvre better before that pyramid was put there! But- that doesn’t keep me from going in and seeing my favorite sculpture- The Winged Victory!
I would think it would detract from the original building. Some love it and some hate it. 🙂

We were there years ago. I’d love to visit again at some point. I have to confess that I’m not crazy about the pyramid.
Mixed reviews here. Some like it and others don’t. I would just love to go see all of this for myself. 🙂
The addition does seem very inconsistent with the rest of the architecture. But, it does serve as a conversation starter! I’d love to spend the day (or four) wandering through the halls of this museum and soaking up the art culture!
