Yule Goats
This unusual tradition at least has a lengthy history. Its origins begin in the 11th century, with a mentioning of a โman-sizedโ goat figure that accompanied Saint Nicholas. Now, itโs got a lot bigger. Cities across Sweden construct โYule Goatsโ at the beginning of advent every year, with the most famous being in Gรคvle, a staw structure that often reaches a whopping 40 feet. Unfortunately, it does attract people who want to turn it into a giant bonfire, and the display has been sadly destroyed around 36 times since 1966. Source: Wanderlust Magazine

I had no idea the Yule Goat even existed! Love learning about these old traditionsโฆ though I feel bad the poor goat keeps getting set on fire.
I didn’t either, but it’s a most interesting tradition. Shame on those that burn them though. Happy day and rest of the week. ๐
I didn’t wither. Interesting Fact, huh?
I love tradition but that Yule Goat has always seemed pretty scary to me……they CAN get out of control and that would certainly ruin a LOT of holidays!! Lots of work to put that together then it’s gone in a minute!
Hugs, Pam
It’s a shame that many burn them, but I love the tradition of building one. Love and hugs to you and lots of scritches to handsome Teddy. ๐
I am grateful again for something new for me. And it’s so sad that some crazy people destroy
what others built. Sometimes I am thinking that they do this because they are very dry in their soul…
Happy WW, dear Sandee! Hugs, joy and love!โค๏ธ๐
It’s new for me too, Suzana, but there are always those that destroy things. Shame on them. Happy WW and rest of the week, my friend. Hugs, love and joy. ๐
A forty foot goat- Wow! I’ve never heard of this tradition before.
I hadn’t heard of it either. Most fun tradition. Not the burning part though. Scritches to handsome Duke. ๐
I never heard of a yule goat before. That is sad that people would want to set it on fire.
People can be so cruel. Happy WW and rest of the week, Ann. A hug to you and lots of scritches to Gibbs. ๐
I’ve never heard of Yule goats! I can see that would make a really big bonfire.
I can see that too, but I would never set it on fire. Happy WW and rest of the week, Deb. ๐
WOW, at least that goat has something to eat, haha. But sad for the fires! Very interesing mores and folkways always on your blogs!
I think it’s a fun tradition. The the burning, but the yule goat. Happy day and rest of the week. ๐
I’ve not heard of this before. It seems a bit weird but it’s an interesting factoid to discover.
There are so many different traditions around the world. I find them most interesting. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ๐
Swedesburg, IA, a tiny town of 99 people, has a big Yule Goat on the side of the highway when you pass through. We have stopped and done photos there before. Thankfully we have not heard that anyone destroys it. They do make a new one every so often. The museum also has a big Dala Horse out front https://mygbgvlife.com/2019/05/31/swedesburg-iowa/
I’d love to visit there. How cool. Thank you for sending the link. Happy WW and rest of the week. ๐
Those are pretty darn amazing, and pretty too!
I can see the community coming together to create this. Beautiful indeed. ๐
This is new to me, Sandee. Interesting factoid, and thanks for sharing. Happy Wednesday!
It was new to me too. I love this tradition. Not the burning of it though. Happy Wednesday, Eugenia. Love and hugs. ๐
๐ซ
We humans both create and destroy – why destroy something a town worked hard to build? Interesting tradition, the Yule Goat and sad that destroying one seems to have become a tradition, also. Alana ramblinwitham
Yes create and destroy. It’s sad to burn these after all the work done to create it. Happy WW and rest of the week. ๐
Yule goats?? What will they think of next?? ๐คฃ๐๐
I have no idea, but I’m sure there will be more new things. Happy WW and rest of the week. ๐
Seems like a Trojan Horse, but hey, if folks enjoy it then more power to ’em.
Says a person who is hunkering down, waiting for Spring.
I just love the different traditions. Once Christmas is over I’m ready for spring too. Happy day and rest of the week. ๐
I didn’t know about the Yule Goat! Very interesting!
Hugs and love, and Happy Wednesday!
I didn’t either and found it WW worthy. Love and healing hugs, my sweet friend. ๐
Definitely WW worthy!
Never heard of this. How sad that people start it on fire. Thanks for hosting. Have a nice day. XO
It is sad that there are those that just destroy beautiful things. Scritches to all the kitties and a big hug to you. ๐
We never heard of a Yule Goat!
I hadn’t either. It’s a wonderful tradition. ๐
Wow! That Yule Goat is amazing!
I thoughts so too, but not the ones that set it on fire. Happy WW and rest of the week. ๐
I have never heard of that before.
I hadn’t either. Happy day and rest of the week. ๐
Glad to know about Christmas Yule Goats, Amazing.
Thanks a lot for hosting.
I love this tradition. Not the burning of the Yule goats, but the tradition. You’re most welcome for the hosting. My pleasure. ๐
Sandee,
What fun and I love learning new factoids..
Hugs to you, Zane and your furry bosses.
Cecilia
Me too. Hugs to you and Bryan, Kit and the kitties. ๐
I thought I knew a lot of Christmas and Yule time history and lore, but I did not know this! Thank you, Sandee, for the great trivia and facts. Love it. Happy Wordless Wednesday, dear friend. Peace to you this holiday season and always.
I didn’t know this either. I love finding these tidbits of traditions. Happy WW and rest of the week. Love, peace and hugs, my friend. ๐
Thank you Sandee. Peace to you!
How cool! But how sad that people try to burn it.
I agree with you. Scritches to the pups and my best to their wonderful peeps. ๐
Maybe Santa should post a few guardian elves around the Christmas goat to prevent fiery displays of giant straw goats. Besides, I like reindeer better anyways.
That’s a thought. I love this tradition though. Have a blessed day and rest of the week, my friend. ๐
Marvelous photo and post of the Yule goat ~ sad that people want to destroy beauty ~ I had a small Yule goat by the fireplace at Xmas ~ I loved it ~ hugs,’
Hugs and love you and your family ~ xo

It is sad, but I love this tradition. Love and hugs to you and Ziggy. ๐
I had never heard of this tradition before! Quite interesting.
Sad that some people want to set it on fire, but it also doesn’t surprise me giving my experience with humanity.
I hadn’t either. You’re right about humanity. I still think there are more good than bad though. ๐
What a wonderful tradition. Sad that some people are so destructive with things like this beautiful image.
I hear you. I love finding these tidbits of tradition. Happy WW and rest of the week. ๐
I love you my Perfect Wife. Your Loving Husband.
I love you my Perfect Husband. I’m the luckiest woman in the world. ๐
That’s so cool! I love the tradition of the Yule Goats. What a shame that some miscreants want to ruin the experience for others by lighting the display on fire. ๐
Happy Wednesday, Sandee!
I love this tradition too. What a shame that there are those that destroy them. Happy day and rest of the week, my friend. ๐
I never heard of Yule Goats before. How interesting. It’s a shame about all those that were destroyed.
There are those that just live to destroy. Happy WW and rest of the week, Yvonne. ๐
Thanks for the yule goat. Sad that people destroy it! Why, oh why????
Thank you, Sandee, for the interesting party weekly. Happy #WW.
My entries this week #41-42
Hope you will join ES #WW https://esmesalon.com/tag/wordlesswednesday/ NOW OPEN
Yes why. It’s a shame. Thank you for all you do. Love and hugs. ๐
How cool! I admit that it would tempt me and one of my “fire bug” brothers to make a bonfire. lol I’m reformed, though, and no longer use my culinary torch on weeds after melting one of our downspouts. ~hangs head~ Hugs, my dear!
We all have onery come out from time to time. It’s not a bad thing. Hugs back. ๐
Thank you for sharing this awesome article! I knew a few of these traditions, but not all.
I love learning about other Christmas traditions. I found this one fun, but not burning it down. ๐
I would love to see this in person. Too bad these idiots who set fire to it don’t have to pay the price…
I agree with you. Shame on them. Scritches to the pups. ๐
That Yule Goat is to big, we would get scared when it stopped by at our place๐นInteresting fact, Sandee๐ฑDouble Pawkisses for a Happy Day and week ahead to you, Zane and the kitties too๐พ๐ฝ๐
There are so many different Christmas traditions. Double Pawkisses to you both and a big hug to Granny. ๐
my first ever viewing of a YULE goat or even hearing of them… so many festive things in other countries… I will ask my blog friend in Sweden if they have them their, I have know her since 2009.
There are so many different Christmas traditions and I love learning about them. Love and healing hugs all around and a treat for handsome Beau. ๐
I have heard of the Yule Goat, but it is a pity that people have to spoil things by setting fire to it. They also have a mythical Yule goat in Finland, but I don’t think they make a straw effigy of it. In Iceland they have a Yule cat who eats people who haven’t got new clothes, and naughty children. I think I will stick to Santa Claus! I have a friend who lives in Finland and she tells me of these monsters!
I’ll stick with Santa too, but it’s fun to learn other traditions. Have a fabulous day and rest of the week, Jackie. Love and hugs. ๐
What a cool tradition! Not the burning part, of course.
You and Mr. Zane have a blessed week! An extra treat to each kitty from me, too.
Not the burning part for sure. You and Mr. Sweetie have a blessed week. Love and hugs, my friend. ๐
I had never heard of this Yule Goat. It’s fun for sure, what a pity people try to destroy it with fire.
I hadn’t either, but it’s a shame some want to burn it. Happy rest of the week. ๐
Once is crazy, but THIRTY-SIX times?!? What is wrong with people?? And that’s all I have to say about that… ๐
I can’t answer that question. Something is very wrong with many. Happy day and rest of the week. Hugs. ๐
I had no idea! An interesting, if slightly upsetting piece, Sandee.
It’s different for sure. I hate it that many want to burn it down. Happy day and weekend, Keith. ๐
I didn’t know a Yule goat, but I like it, it’s so special ! It’s nice to know through our blogs of so many different Christmas uses !
I love to learn about other wonderful traditions. Happy weekend, Ingrid. Scritches to Rosie. ๐
This is interesting to know about a Christmas goat! It does look like it would make a good bonfire. It would be a fun thing if the cities would make it a supervised tradition to set it on fire, then maybe it would not be randomly destroyed. ๐
It’s shame they burn it though. So beautiful and a wonderful tradition. Happy week. ๐
