This unusual tradition at least has a lengthy history. Its origins begin in the 11th century, with a mentioning of a โ€˜man-sizedโ€™ goat figure that accompanied Saint Nicholas. Now, itโ€™s got a lot bigger. Cities across Sweden construct โ€˜Yule Goatsโ€™ at the beginning of advent every year, with the most famous being in Gรคvle, a staw structure that often reaches a whopping 40 feet. Unfortunately, it does attract people who want to turn it into a giant bonfire, and the display has been sadly destroyed around 36 times since 1966. Source: Wanderlust Magazine

I love tradition but that Yule Goat has always seemed pretty scary to me……they CAN get out of control and that would certainly ruin a LOT of holidays!! Lots of work to put that together then it’s gone in a minute!

    Hugs, Pam

I am grateful again for something new for me. And it’s so sad that some crazy people destroy
what others built. Sometimes I am thinking that they do this because they are very dry in their soul…
Happy WW, dear Sandee! Hugs, joy and love!โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜˜

It’s new for me too, Suzana, but there are always those that destroy things. Shame on them. Happy WW and rest of the week, my friend. Hugs, love and joy. ๐Ÿ™‚

There are so many different traditions around the world. I find them most interesting. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ๐Ÿ™‚

We humans both create and destroy – why destroy something a town worked hard to build? Interesting tradition, the Yule Goat and sad that destroying one seems to have become a tradition, also. Alana ramblinwitham

I thought I knew a lot of Christmas and Yule time history and lore, but I did not know this! Thank you, Sandee, for the great trivia and facts. Love it. Happy Wordless Wednesday, dear friend. Peace to you this holiday season and always.

I had never heard of this tradition before! Quite interesting.
Sad that some people want to set it on fire, but it also doesn’t surprise me giving my experience with humanity.

That’s so cool! I love the tradition of the Yule Goats. What a shame that some miscreants want to ruin the experience for others by lighting the display on fire. ๐Ÿ™

    Happy Wednesday, Sandee!

How cool! I admit that it would tempt me and one of my “fire bug” brothers to make a bonfire. lol I’m reformed, though, and no longer use my culinary torch on weeds after melting one of our downspouts. ~hangs head~ Hugs, my dear!

my first ever viewing of a YULE goat or even hearing of them… so many festive things in other countries… I will ask my blog friend in Sweden if they have them their, I have know her since 2009.

  11. Memories of Eric and Flynn says:

I have heard of the Yule Goat, but it is a pity that people have to spoil things by setting fire to it. They also have a mythical Yule goat in Finland, but I don’t think they make a straw effigy of it. In Iceland they have a Yule cat who eats people who haven’t got new clothes, and naughty children. I think I will stick to Santa Claus! I have a friend who lives in Finland and she tells me of these monsters!

This is interesting to know about a Christmas goat! It does look like it would make a good bonfire. It would be a fun thing if the cities would make it a supervised tradition to set it on fire, then maybe it would not be randomly destroyed. ๐Ÿ™‚
