The average person spends a little over 76,500 hours on their smartphones over the course of their lifetime—which works out to 8.74 years of their life. This stat computes the average age of acquiring a phone—now just over ten years old—with 3.07 hours of average daily use.

Millennials spend the most time on their phones, clocking an average of 3.7 daily hours. However, average daily screen time decreases as the age of users increases, with Gen Xers reporting 3 hours of daily phone use and Boomers spending just 2.5 hours per day staring at their screens.  For perspective, this works out to around 56 days each year for millennials, compared to 39 days per year for Boomers. Neither my husband nor myself have cell phones……life is beautifully uncomplicated this way. I am sure if we had more family or medical reasons to be “reachable” we would carry them but we aren’t and we don’t and it’s just nice to be the only people in a restaurant who are having a conversation with each other instead of staring at or typing on a cell phone. LOL

    Love, Pam

    • Sandee says:

Nothing wrong with not having a cell phone. I’m not a fan of them and most of the time I ignore the phone. The sound is off 90% of the time. Love to you and lots of scritches to Teddy. 🙂

  2. Duke says:

Thankfully, this info doesn’t apply to my mom. She takes her cell phone with her when she leaves the house for safety reasons and that pretty much sums it up.

I’m a Boomer who has come to find my smartphone an essential part of my life. And who inspired me to get my first smart phone back in 2012? My (then) 80 plus year old mother in law! Alana ramblinwitham

I sat waiting on hubby to get his lab blood drawn and there were maybe 20 people in the lobby, there were 3 of us without a cell in hand.. I love my smartphone and my report each week on it says I spend 3 hours a week on it.. I don’t talk on it, and now that Jackie died, only get 1 or 2 texts a day. the hours are asking it questions during movies, like how old is so and so. I leave it in the car on the rare occasion we eat out.

    • Sandee says:

I’m not on mine very much either. I don’t want a phone when I’m dining. That’s just rude in my opinion. I miss calls often. Oh well. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to handsome Beau. 🙂

  5. angelswhisper2011 says:

Thank Cat Granny is a Boomer and she always says to Grandpaw that she wants the ‘old school’ phone back and wants only a handy so she can reach someone in case of an emergency, and vice versa, when she’s going out. All her Grandchildren are millennials, they hardly talk anymore, they only WApp and we see a lot of Boomers+the next Generation, also took place in that hype of almost no-return…sigh….The good news is, that our grandchildren aren’t using their phone hardly anymore, when we’re around. That’s hopeful, isn’t it, Sandee😸Double Pawkisses for a Happy Wednesday and Week ahead, to you, Zane and the kitties too. Enjoy!🐾😽💞

    • Sandee says:

We don’t have a home phone, but we both have cell phones. We’re not much for being on them though. We use them when we’re apart so we can stay in touch. That’s about it. Double Pawkisses to you both and a huge hug to Granny. 🙂

  6. Keith's Ramblings says:

It’s sad. Young people today are losing the art of actual conversation, the joy of phyical interaction. Mine is useful for some things, and it has a reasonable camera. However, I’m not one for unsocial media. Look up kids, you don’t know what you’re missing!

    • Sandee says:

I agree with you. The thing I hate the most is going out to eat and seeing people on the phones when they are eating. So disrespectful. Happy Wordless Wednesday, Keith. 🙂

    • Sandee says:

You nailed it. I see people together, but are on their phones instead of enjoying each other. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week, my friend. 🙂

  7. 15andmeowing says:

Those are some sad facts. I rarely use mine except to call my hubby when I am at my niece’s babysitting because she doesn’t have a landline.
Thanks for hosting. Have a great day. XO

    • Sandee says:

We depend on them when we’re apart, but are rarely on them when we’re home. Happy Wordless Wednesday, my friend. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂

  8. Ann Thompson says:

I probably spend more time looking at my phone now because I’m home alone most of the time. I don’t think I spend as much time with it as some of these kids do though.

    • Sandee says:

I’m sure you don’t either. I was just surprised at the time the young one were on the phone. Happy day and rest of the week, Ann. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to Gibbs. 🙂

  9. Memories of Eric and Flynn says:

I can’t say that surprises me. So many seem to have their phones permanently attached to their hands. I carry mine for emergencies and don’t use it much.

    • Sandee says:

I’ve seen the same thing, Jackie. It makes me sad when we’re eating out and others that should be enjoying each other are on their phones. 🙂

  10. DrillerAA says:

I am not surprised by the numbers. Millennials have been staring at a screen since they were infants and their parents handed them the phone to keep them quiet. Gen-X have created most of the apps we use in order to create the “paperless office” and or the cashless society. Boomers are pretty adventurous and will try new things just to keep from missing out. Just sayin’. I am on my phone more than necessary but I prefer a large screen, so my desktop computer with a 27″ monitor is still my favorite device.

  11. Cecilia Upchurch says:

    Sandee this was timely.
I heard on the news AT&T is offering 1,000.00 off the cost of a new smart phone if you trade in of your old phone. Happy WW to you and all your loved ones
    Cecilia

    • Sandee says:

They do that, but AT&T isn’t cheap. We depend on the cell phones when we’re in different places. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, my friend. Love and hugs. 🙂

      • Cecilia Upchurch says:

OH are you so very right…I did a bit of research. My iPhone is a 13 does what I need it to do
takes good photos. From what I saw on line 13 will continue to receive updates at least thru 2026 and maybe into 2027. As long as it receives updates it is fine. I only use it for our main phone and for texting and taking photos. My email is only on desktop or iPad. So no new phone is needed thank goodness

  12. yvonne473 says:

I’m really not surprised. Whenever I’m out – whether it’s in the store or a doctor’s office or wherever – people are staring at their phones. I’m a boomer and not on very often. I’m mostly on my laptop.

  13. Suzette Benjamin says:

Thank you for these statistics, Sandee.. I am surprised that the average of time spent on the phone is so high. My goodness and we wonder where the day goes, sometimes eh. An eye opener. Thank you for sharing.
Happy Wordless Wednesday. Grace and bliss to you, my friend.

    • Sandee says:

You’re right about how handy they are in many cases, but I can put it down. I hate it when folks are on the phone while dining with their family or friends. So rude. 🙂

  14. CAAC says:

I’m like you Sandee, I’m on my computer more than my phone. Even when we’re away from home, I primarily use my phone for calls, who would’ve guess, navigation, finding businesses, or using my camera. I don’t do any social media stuff at all. I may occasionally check my email if we’re on gone from the house for a few days. Smartphones are quite handy but I certainly don’t want to spend all of my time looking at a small mobile device.

    • Sandee says:

We are using our phones about the same. I’m on my computer right now. It’s important that I visit and comment to those that link up on my hops. The phone is near, but I rarely touch when I’m home. Love and hugs. 🙂

  15. messymimi's meanderings says:

It’s a help, especially to keep in touch with Grandma and Grandpa. I also love having my Bible and devotionals on my phone to take with me while I’m working.

I pray you and Mr. Zane have a great week, please give scritches to Lil’ Bit and Squeaker from me.

    • Sandee says:

I hear you, but we don’t have it in our hand all the time. Not during dinner or visiting with others. Happy WW and rest of the week, my friend. Love and hugs. 🙂

  16. The OP Pack says:

That is just crazy insane. Just think of all the time they could be spending loving on pups and kitties everywhere.

  18. Veronica Lee says:

Wow, those numbers are crazy! 😲 Makes you think about all the time spent staring at a screen—imagine what we could do with even half of that!

    Happy Thursday, Sandee!

  19. Rosey says:

As a teacher, I see this being true. The kids use their phones like a lifeline. I have to phsyically stop a lesson and say, “everyone close your laptop lids and put your phones away” before I can continue teaching sometimes. And still there will be one student who won’t…and then you have to stop class or keep going and let them be (I usually do that latter because talking to them one-on-one after class works better than a classroom confrontation).

  20. Smudge says:

Interesting stats, for sure. Mom uses hers as little as possible, whereas dad relies on his mostly for work (and to catch up on news, to be honest). Dad’s always making fun of mom because she often either ignores hers, doesn’t have the volume up, or just plain doesn’t hear it. He says one of these days he’s gonna be trying to get hold of her because he got hurt at work (he works alone and is often outside with power tools, ladders, etc.) or in an accident or something and she won’t answer. He’s constantly texting with the bosses, vendors & contractors and his kids since texting is the easiest way for him.

  21. Lux says:

I’m a millennial and I feel bad for spending so much time on my phone. As much as possible I ignore it. Some days I’m good, other times I waste so much time doom scrolling.

  22. Wing Commander Basil & The B Team says:

Supurr scary stats, what a time suck, and an incredible diversion device! We’ve been talking about getting rid of our smart phones for a while now… this may be the clincher! Happy Monday Sandee and thank mew for adding our links last week, mew are epic!

  23. Darla M Sands says:

I resisted owning a ‘smart’ phone for a long time. 😀 While glad now for the conveniences of maps and shopping and whatnot, I limit time spent and never check social media. Hugs, my dear.
