Smartphones
The average person spends a little over 76,500 hours on their smartphones over the course of their lifetime—which works out to 8.74 years of their life. This stat computes the average age of acquiring a phone—now just over ten years old—with 3.07 hours of average daily use.
Millennials spend the most time on their phones, clocking an average of 3.7 daily hours. However, average daily screen time decreases as the age of users increases, with Gen Xers reporting 3 hours of daily phone use and Boomers spending just 2.5 hours per day staring at their screens. For perspective, this works out to around 56 days each year for millennials, compared to 39 days per year for Boomers. Source: whistleOut

The younger people do seem to be on their phones constantly. I am a close second I’m afraid lol. Aloha
I’m a boomer and I’m not on the phone very much. The computer yes, the phone no. 🙂
Neither my husband nor myself have cell phones……life is beautifully uncomplicated this way. I am sure if we had more family or medical reasons to be “reachable” we would carry them but we aren’t and we don’t and it’s just nice to be the only people in a restaurant who are having a conversation with each other instead of staring at or typing on a cell phone. LOL
Love, Pam
Nothing wrong with not having a cell phone. I’m not a fan of them and most of the time I ignore the phone. The sound is off 90% of the time. Love to you and lots of scritches to Teddy. 🙂
Thankfully, this info doesn’t apply to my mom. She takes her cell phone with her when she leaves the house for safety reasons and that pretty much sums it up.
That’s pretty much me too. I’m not a fan of the cell phone. Happy Wordless Wednesday. A hug to you and lots of scritches to Duke. 🙂
I’m a Boomer who has come to find my smartphone an essential part of my life. And who inspired me to get my first smart phone back in 2012? My (then) 80 plus year old mother in law! Alana ramblinwitham
I use it to blog when I’m out and about. That’s about it. Happy Wordless Wednesday. 🙂
I sat waiting on hubby to get his lab blood drawn and there were maybe 20 people in the lobby, there were 3 of us without a cell in hand.. I love my smartphone and my report each week on it says I spend 3 hours a week on it.. I don’t talk on it, and now that Jackie died, only get 1 or 2 texts a day. the hours are asking it questions during movies, like how old is so and so. I leave it in the car on the rare occasion we eat out.
I’m not on mine very much either. I don’t want a phone when I’m dining. That’s just rude in my opinion. I miss calls often. Oh well. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to handsome Beau. 🙂
That is sad. Mom hates her phone and uses it mainly for quick photos or real phone calls. Texting is the absolute worst and she tries to avoid it whenever possible.
You and I are on the same page. I remember going to pay phones back in the day. No cell phones at all. It was a good time. 🙂
Hubby and I each have a phone for safety reasons. Otherwise, we don’t spend much time texting or playing games. Happy Wednesday!
Hubby and I are of the same mindset. We’re not much for the phones when we’re home. 🙂
Great minds think alike! 😉
Thank Cat Granny is a Boomer and she always says to Grandpaw that she wants the ‘old school’ phone back and wants only a handy so she can reach someone in case of an emergency, and vice versa, when she’s going out. All her Grandchildren are millennials, they hardly talk anymore, they only WApp and we see a lot of Boomers+the next Generation, also took place in that hype of almost no-return…sigh….The good news is, that our grandchildren aren’t using their phone hardly anymore, when we’re around. That’s hopeful, isn’t it, Sandee😸Double Pawkisses for a Happy Wednesday and Week ahead, to you, Zane and the kitties too. Enjoy!🐾😽💞
We don’t have a home phone, but we both have cell phones. We’re not much for being on them though. We use them when we’re apart so we can stay in touch. That’s about it. Double Pawkisses to you both and a huge hug to Granny. 🙂
It’s sad. Young people today are losing the art of actual conversation, the joy of phyical interaction. Mine is useful for some things, and it has a reasonable camera. However, I’m not one for unsocial media. Look up kids, you don’t know what you’re missing!
I agree with you. The thing I hate the most is going out to eat and seeing people on the phones when they are eating. So disrespectful. Happy Wordless Wednesday, Keith. 🙂
Those stats sure are revealing. How ironic that being more connected has ended up making us more disconnected.
Happy Wednesday, Sandee!
You nailed it. I see people together, but are on their phones instead of enjoying each other. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week, my friend. 🙂
WOW, that’s sure a lot of phone time!
I had no idea. I was very surprised. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
Those are some sad facts. I rarely use mine except to call my hubby when I am at my niece’s babysitting because she doesn’t have a landline.
Thanks for hosting. Have a great day. XO
We depend on them when we’re apart, but are rarely on them when we’re home. Happy Wordless Wednesday, my friend. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
I probably spend more time looking at my phone now because I’m home alone most of the time. I don’t think I spend as much time with it as some of these kids do though.
I’m sure you don’t either. I was just surprised at the time the young one were on the phone. Happy day and rest of the week, Ann. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to Gibbs. 🙂
I can’t say that surprises me. So many seem to have their phones permanently attached to their hands. I carry mine for emergencies and don’t use it much.
I’ve seen the same thing, Jackie. It makes me sad when we’re eating out and others that should be enjoying each other are on their phones. 🙂
We’re not surprised by those numbers.
I was. I guess I didn’t think about it before. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. 🙂
I am not surprised by the numbers. Millennials have been staring at a screen since they were infants and their parents handed them the phone to keep them quiet. Gen-X have created most of the apps we use in order to create the “paperless office” and or the cashless society. Boomers are pretty adventurous and will try new things just to keep from missing out. Just sayin’. I am on my phone more than necessary but I prefer a large screen, so my desktop computer with a 27″ monitor is still my favorite device.
You and I have the same favorite device. I’m not surprised about that. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, my friend. 🙂
Sandee this was timely.
I heard on the news AT&T is offering 1,000.00 off the cost of a new smart phone if you trade in of your old phone. Happy WW to you and all your loved ones
Cecilia
They do that, but AT&T isn’t cheap. We depend on the cell phones when we’re in different places. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, my friend. Love and hugs. 🙂
OH are you so very right…I did a bit of research. My iPhone is a 13 does what I need it to do
takes good photos. From what I saw on line 13 will continue to receive updates at least thru 2026 and maybe into 2027. As long as it receives updates it is fine. I only use it for our main phone and for texting and taking photos. My email is only on desktop or iPad. So no new phone is needed thank goodness
I would bet teenagers are on their phones even more. Some never seem to put them down.
I’ve seen that same thing too. It’s sad, but it’s normal for them. 🙂
I’m definitely guilty of being on mine way too much. The collies will let me know too, lol!
I was just surprised by how much time was spent on cell phones. That’s a lot of ones life on the phone. Happy Wordless Wednesday. 🙂
That’s pretty dispiriting and somewhat surprising-I expected the hours per day to be higher.
What surprised me was the almost 9 years of ones life is spent on their cell phone. More big healing hugs, my friend. 🙂
I’m really not surprised. Whenever I’m out – whether it’s in the store or a doctor’s office or wherever – people are staring at their phones. I’m a boomer and not on very often. I’m mostly on my laptop.
I’ve noticed that too. I’m on my computer far more than my phone. Happy WW and rest of the week, Yvonne. 🙂
With blogging, it does make up for a lot of time screen time – and I mean A LOT.
Thanks, Sandee, thank you for hosting this weekly party.
My entries this week #42+43
Hope you will join ES #WW https://esmesalon.com/tag/wordlesswednesday/ NOW OPEN
It does for me too. I’m on the computer far to much. Happy WW, my friend. 🙂
Thank you for these statistics, Sandee.. I am surprised that the average of time spent on the phone is so high. My goodness and we wonder where the day goes, sometimes eh. An eye opener. Thank you for sharing.
Happy Wordless Wednesday. Grace and bliss to you, my friend.
I was shocked. That’s a lot of years you could be doing something far more fun. Happy WW and rest of the week, Suzette. Hugs. 🙂
So true, far more fun things to do, I agree. Thank you. And hugs back to you, Sandee. Cheers.
Guess I’d be hitting those numbers, too, if I didn’t use my laptop for so much!
I use my computer way more than my phone. 🙂
Would rather text than call.
Me too. I hate talking on a phone. 🙂
There are so many pros and cons about smart phones….We lived without them for so long, but I don’t know what we’d do without them now!
You’re right about how handy they are in many cases, but I can put it down. I hate it when folks are on the phone while dining with their family or friends. So rude. 🙂
I’m like you Sandee, I’m on my computer more than my phone. Even when we’re away from home, I primarily use my phone for calls, who would’ve guess, navigation, finding businesses, or using my camera. I don’t do any social media stuff at all. I may occasionally check my email if we’re on gone from the house for a few days. Smartphones are quite handy but I certainly don’t want to spend all of my time looking at a small mobile device.
We are using our phones about the same. I’m on my computer right now. It’s important that I visit and comment to those that link up on my hops. The phone is near, but I rarely touch when I’m home. Love and hugs. 🙂
I use my phone to play Spider Solitare sometimes when I want to kill a little in-between time. 🙂
I teach in a middle school and we have a no-phone policy. The amazing thing is that most of the kids at my school have no social skills what-so-ever.
We know why too, Patrick. It’s a shame. Thank you for what you do. 🙂
I am a boomer. Computer use is more than my phone usage. Blogging is my biggest reason and I prefer to use the laptop for bigger screen than my phone.
Thank you for hosting. I am at 45
Same for me. You’re most welcome for the hosting. I enjoy it very much. 🙂
It’s a help, especially to keep in touch with Grandma and Grandpa. I also love having my Bible and devotionals on my phone to take with me while I’m working.
I pray you and Mr. Zane have a great week, please give scritches to Lil’ Bit and Squeaker from me.
I hear you, but we don’t have it in our hand all the time. Not during dinner or visiting with others. Happy WW and rest of the week, my friend. Love and hugs. 🙂
That is just crazy insane. Just think of all the time they could be spending loving on pups and kitties everywhere.
Woos – Misty and Timber
I agree with you. Loving on our babies is far more important. Scritches to the pups and a hug to you. 🙂
Each generation has their ‘thing’ ~ I use computer more than phone ~
Hugs and love to you and your family ~
Wishing you good health, laughter and love in your days,
clm ~ A ShutterBug Explores,
aka (A Creative Harbor)
I use my computer more than my phone too. It’s the way of the generations. Love and hugs to you and Ziggy. 🙂
Wow, those numbers are crazy! 😲 Makes you think about all the time spent staring at a screen—imagine what we could do with even half of that!
Happy Thursday, Sandee!
I hear you. I was amazed. Happy rest of the week, Veronica. Hugs.:)
As a teacher, I see this being true. The kids use their phones like a lifeline. I have to phsyically stop a lesson and say, “everyone close your laptop lids and put your phones away” before I can continue teaching sometimes. And still there will be one student who won’t…and then you have to stop class or keep going and let them be (I usually do that latter because talking to them one-on-one after class works better than a classroom confrontation).
I hear you about the phones. It’s almost as if they can’t survive without their phones. Kind of sad. 🙂
Interesting stats, for sure. Mom uses hers as little as possible, whereas dad relies on his mostly for work (and to catch up on news, to be honest). Dad’s always making fun of mom because she often either ignores hers, doesn’t have the volume up, or just plain doesn’t hear it. He says one of these days he’s gonna be trying to get hold of her because he got hurt at work (he works alone and is often outside with power tools, ladders, etc.) or in an accident or something and she won’t answer. He’s constantly texting with the bosses, vendors & contractors and his kids since texting is the easiest way for him.
I’m terrible about my phone, too. I was surprised with these facts. Happy weekend. 🙂
I’m a millennial and I feel bad for spending so much time on my phone. As much as possible I ignore it. Some days I’m good, other times I waste so much time doom scrolling.
You treat your phone like I treat my computer. It’s all good. 🙂
Supurr scary stats, what a time suck, and an incredible diversion device! We’ve been talking about getting rid of our smart phones for a while now… this may be the clincher! Happy Monday Sandee and thank mew for adding our links last week, mew are epic!
I still spend way too much time playing my card games on my dumb smartphone.
I resisted owning a ‘smart’ phone for a long time. 😀 While glad now for the conveniences of maps and shopping and whatnot, I limit time spent and never check social media. Hugs, my dear.
Everything is at your fingertips and it doesn’t matter where you are. So convenient. Hugs. 🙂
