Cat Litter

Of course, no list of cat facts would be complete without a kitty litter fact. File this one under practical cat facts! Cat litter was originally mostly sand that was bagged and sold by pet stores until 1947 when Edward Lowe introduced his clay-based Kitty Litter. At first, Lowe had trouble convincing his local pet store to sell the product.

Lowe took a gamble and gave his cat litter away for free until people were willing to pay for it. Lowe’s gamble paid off, and Kitty Litter became such a household name that the trademark became generalized to refer to all cat litter. Lowe continued in the cat litter business and founded the company behind the Tidy Cat brand of cat litter.

Gave away for free until people would pay for it. I guess that paid off in the end, big time. Now we have fancy cat litters that wouldn’t have been dreamed of back then. Alana ramblinwitham

  2. Memories of Eric and Flynn says:

It certainly paid off by giving it away in the beginning. Ivor always keeps a bag of clay litter in the tractor garage/workshop for absorbing any spills.

  3. onespoiledcat says:

We’ve tried many litters through the years – currently using the lightweight stuff since we have trouble hauling around heavy bags anymore…..Ted doesn’t care WHAT litter we use thankfully and actually still prefers “doing business” outside like a dog!!

    Hugs, Pam

  4. Suzana says:

I was always amazed by how the kitties use the litters, in such a natural way.
    Their instinct is perfect!
Thank you for another drop of info. dear Sandee!
Hugs and Happy WW! And of course thank you for Blog Hop!❤️😘

    • Sandee says:

I am too. A kitten can be put in the litter box and they will go there for the rest of their lives. Amazing. Happy Wordless Wednesday, Suzana. Hugs. 🙂

    • Sandee says:

We use it for those things too. I was very amazed how kitty litter began. Happy WW and rest of the week, Duke. I hope you’re feeling better. 🙂

  5. My GBGV Life says:

Mom says the transformation of cat litter is nothing she has ever thought about but now that you mention it, it is amazing. She had her first cat when she was seven and since then cat litter has evolved so much in a good way!

  6. Gattina says:

What an adorable picture ! The cat litter is not anymore what it was, I buy one which covers the smell and forms little balls. Very practical for the owner of an inside cat !

  7. Ann Thompson says:

How interesting. I never gave much thought to the history of cat litter. That was a smart move giving his clay cat litter away until people were willing to pay for it. It certainly paid off in a big way.

He’s in my hero book too. You’re welcome for the hosting and you have a great day too, my friend. Scritches to all the precious kitties. 🙂

Now that is a fun fun post.
I bet while loving and living with cats I probably bought enough bag/boxes/jars of litter fill up a small ocean.
    Hugs Cecilia

It’s always fun to learn how things began. I had no idea about the beginnings of kitty litter. Double Pawkisses to the kitties and a big hug to Granny. 🙂

  10. CatSynth says:

Ah kitty litter. So central to our life here at CatSynth HQ, it’s hard to imagine what it would be like with just sand.

  11. Xena and Lucy says:

Just makes me wonder if the word “litter” was originally used as a term for where cats do their business, or from things thrown on the ground outside, as in, “don’t litter.”

  12. Suzette Benjamin says:

Great story of determination and persistence by Edward Lowe. He clearly believed in his product and the rest as they say…is history. Thank you for these inspiring facts, Sandee. Happy Wordless Wednesday.

  13. The OP Pack says:

Thanks for the back story on kitty litter. Sometimes it is used here to help with traction on the ice, but it can get a bit messy. Maybe Mr. Lowe should also have made a doggy litter for puppies.

  14. Veronica Lee says:

Interesting fact about kitty litter! Edward Lowe’s gamble really paid off—imagine if we were still using sand! Love learning these little nuggets of history.

    Happy Thursday, Sandee! 😊

  15. Caz / InvisiblyMe says:

Mr Lowe was very smart (and generous) to give it much away for free just to try to get people to consider his product. And thank goodness they did! Wouldn’t be quite the same just using sand.
    Happy Friday, Sandee! xx

  16. Marvelous Marv says:

What a cool fun fact about Kitty Litter! We think our Great Grand Mom was an early user up here in the great white north! She LOVED cats and fostered strays way back in the middle of the last century! Her favorite quote was, “Cats are the visible soul of the house as the time spent with them is never wasted”. Keep being awesome! Your #1 Fan Boy, Marvelous Marv

    • Sandee says:

What a wonderful saying your great grand mom said. Beautiful and so true. Scritches all around, a smooch to Marvelous Marv and a big hug to mom. 🙂
