Cat Litter
Of course, no list of cat facts would be complete without a kitty litter fact. File this one under practical cat facts! Cat litter was originally mostly sand that was bagged and sold by pet stores until 1947 when Edward Lowe introduced his clay-based Kitty Litter. At first, Lowe had trouble convincing his local pet store to sell the product.
Lowe took a gamble and gave his cat litter away for free until people were willing to pay for it. Lowe’s gamble paid off, and Kitty Litter became such a household name that the trademark became generalized to refer to all cat litter. Lowe continued in the cat litter business and founded the company behind the Tidy Cat brand of cat litter.

Gave away for free until people would pay for it. I guess that paid off in the end, big time. Now we have fancy cat litters that wouldn’t have been dreamed of back then. Alana ramblinwitham
I had no idea how cat litter began. Very interesting. Happy WW and rest of the week. 🙂
It certainly paid off by giving it away in the beginning. Ivor always keeps a bag of clay litter in the tractor garage/workshop for absorbing any spills.
Cat litter cleans up lots of messes. Happy WW and rest of the week, Jackie. 🙂
Thank goodness for kitty litter, that is all I can say. 😉
Amen to that, my friend. Happy Wordless Wednesday. 🙂
We’ve tried many litters through the years – currently using the lightweight stuff since we have trouble hauling around heavy bags anymore…..Ted doesn’t care WHAT litter we use thankfully and actually still prefers “doing business” outside like a dog!!
Hugs, Pam
Our kitties don’t go outside. I get that it would be easier if they go outside though. Happy WW and rest of the week. 🙂
I was always amazed by how the kitties use the litters, in such a natural way.
Their instinct is perfect!
Thank you for another drop of info. dear Sandee!
Hugs and Happy WW! And of course thank you for Blog Hop!❤️😘
I am too. A kitten can be put in the litter box and they will go there for the rest of their lives. Amazing. Happy Wordless Wednesday, Suzana. Hugs. 🙂
Kitty litter is a wonderful invention and not just for kitties to potty. We use it in the basement and in the garage for spills!
We use it for those things too. I was very amazed how kitty litter began. Happy WW and rest of the week, Duke. I hope you’re feeling better. 🙂
A great way to start his business and it truly paid off for his company.
It was a long shot that paid off very well. Scritches to handsome Beau. 🙂
Mom says the transformation of cat litter is nothing she has ever thought about but now that you mention it, it is amazing. She had her first cat when she was seven and since then cat litter has evolved so much in a good way!
I thought it was amazing too. I was very surprised at how it began. Scritches to the precious pups. 🙂
What an adorable picture ! The cat litter is not anymore what it was, I buy one which covers the smell and forms little balls. Very practical for the owner of an inside cat !
I agree with you, Gattina. We get what works for our babies and us. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. 🙂
What a fascinating origin story. Mr. Lowe’s purr-sistance and belief in his idea sure did pay off in the end!
It is an amazing beginning for something all kitty personal assistants depend on. Happy WW and rest of the week. 🙂
What an interesting story, Sandee. Thank goodness for Edward Lowe’s genius! Happy Wednesday! Hugs!
I agree with you. He was a very smart man. Happy Wednesday, my friend. Hugs. 🙂
😊
How interesting. I never gave much thought to the history of cat litter. That was a smart move giving his clay cat litter away until people were willing to pay for it. It certainly paid off in a big way.
It paid off in a very big way. Smart man. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to Gibbs. 🙂
He is a hero in my book. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day. XO
He’s in my hero book too. You’re welcome for the hosting and you have a great day too, my friend. Scritches to all the precious kitties. 🙂
We agree with Ellen!!!
I agree with you and Ellen. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
That was so interesting and I didn’t know any of that.
I didn’t know any of this either. An amazing beginning of something so many of us depend on. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
I did not know the story behind Kitty Litter.
I didn’t either. An amazing success story. Happy day and rest of the week, my friend. 🙂
Now that is a fun fun post.
I bet while loving and living with cats I probably bought enough bag/boxes/jars of litter fill up a small ocean.
Hugs Cecilia
I love learning new things and you’re right about filling up a small ocean. Happy WW and rest of the week, Cecilia. Love and hugs. 🙂
I’ve learned something today – litterally!
You crack me up, Keith. I laughed out loud at your comment. Happy WW and rest of the week. 🙂
Great info and sweet kitty photo ~
Hugs and love to you and your family ~ xo

The history of kitty litter is an amazing story. Love and hugs to you and Ziggy. 🙂
Just like drug dealers; give it away for free until they are hooked on it! Brilliant!
Hadn’t thought of it in those terms, but you’re right. Well said. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week. 🙂
It looks like that kitty appurrooves it 100%. Very interesting to know😸Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day and week ahead, to you, Zane and the kitties too. Enjoy!🐾😽💞
It’s always fun to learn how things began. I had no idea about the beginnings of kitty litter. Double Pawkisses to the kitties and a big hug to Granny. 🙂
It amazes me how far cat litter has been improved in the 20 years since my Addy Cat owned me.
It sure has improved. It’s a most wonderful product. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
That’s interesting. Today there are so many different types of litter. Have a great Wednesday and rest of the week!
There are and so many that many kitties won’t use. We learned this by trail and error. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week, Yvonne. 🙂
Ah kitty litter. So central to our life here at CatSynth HQ, it’s hard to imagine what it would be like with just sand.
I can’t imagine either. We use good kitty litter and our kitties love it. We’re happy about that. 🙂
Just makes me wonder if the word “litter” was originally used as a term for where cats do their business, or from things thrown on the ground outside, as in, “don’t litter.”
I don’t know, but it’s something to research. Scritches to the pups and a hug to mom. 🙂
Brilliant move on this fellas part. He really built an empire, didn’t he?
He sure did build an empire. Brilliant. Have a great day and rest of the week, Cathy. Love and hugs. 🙂
Great story of determination and persistence by Edward Lowe. He clearly believed in his product and the rest as they say…is history. Thank you for these inspiring facts, Sandee. Happy Wordless Wednesday.
He figured it out perfectly. Brilliant. Happy Wordless Wednesday, my friend. 🙂
Thank you dear friend. Blessings to you!
Thanks, Sandee, thank you for hosting this weekly party.

Fascinating info. I had no idea!
I had no idea either. Hugs. 🙂
Such great knowledge, thanks for sharing this. I might use it in an assignment for my students.
I was very surprised about this. Happy WW and rest of the week, Patrick. Thanks for playing along. 🙂
amazing how everything can become a successful business.
You’re right about that, Klara. Happy WW and rest of the week. 🙂
Thanks for the back story on kitty litter. Sometimes it is used here to help with traction on the ice, but it can get a bit messy. Maybe Mr. Lowe should also have made a doggy litter for puppies.
Woos – Misty and Timber
It has many uses. I was surprised at its beginnings. Happy WW. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
Now we wouldn’t be without it, would we? I pray you and Mr. Zane have a great week, and give scritches to Lil’ Bit and Squeaker.
You’re right about that. Hubby buys it from Chewy often. Happy WW and rest of the week. Love and hugs. 🙂
Interesting fact about kitty litter! Edward Lowe’s gamble really paid off—imagine if we were still using sand! Love learning these little nuggets of history.
Happy Thursday, Sandee! 😊
It paid off very well. Happy day and week, Veronica. 😉
Very interesting! Smart guy! Way back in the day I used Tidy Cat……now I only use World’s Best
Very smart guy. A hug to you and scritches to the boys. 🙂
Mr Lowe was very smart (and generous) to give it much away for free just to try to get people to consider his product. And thank goodness they did! Wouldn’t be quite the same just using sand.
Happy Friday, Sandee! xx
He was indeed. it sure paid off well. Happy Friday and weekend, Caz. 🙂
What a cool fun fact about Kitty Litter! We think our Great Grand Mom was an early user up here in the great white north! She LOVED cats and fostered strays way back in the middle of the last century! Her favorite quote was, “Cats are the visible soul of the house as the time spent with them is never wasted”. Keep being awesome! Your #1 Fan Boy, Marvelous Marv
What a wonderful saying your great grand mom said. Beautiful and so true. Scritches all around, a smooch to Marvelous Marv and a big hug to mom. 🙂
Upbeat history such as this is fascinating, as is Marvelous Marv’s awesome quote. Hugs, my dear.
You’re right about both. Hugs, my friend. Happy weekend. 🙂
Wow, we never knew that!!! Thank cod for Edward Lowe!!! Happy Caturday Sandee, we hope mew’ve have an epic week and thank mew furry much for adding our links! ❤️😻❤️
Yes, thank codes for him. You’re most welcome for adding your links. Scritches to the kitties and hugs to you. 🙂
This reminds me of my cat, Monti. Who tried to sit in a half-opened box of birdseed. He was confused? Ha!
Our kitties sit on so many strange things. 🙂
