The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the American city of San Francisco, California – the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula – to Marin County, carrying both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The Frommer’s travel guide describes the Golden Gate Bridge as “possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world.” At the time of its opening in 1937, it was both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and a total height of 746 feet (227 m). When I saw your photo I at first thought we had the same place!
My photos are of the 24th April suspension bridge over the Tagus in Lisbon, Portugal. It was built by the same construction company that built the San Francisco bridge hence the very close similarity. I believe it is still the largest suspension bridge in Europe.
Just looked this up.

Thanks for the link. I can see the similarities. Beautiful the both of them. 🙂
What a beautiful photo not seen it from that angle before 🙂
Have a bridgetastic WWS ➡
There are a zillion angles of this bridge. It’s a work of art. 🙂
It is a beautiful bridge.
Yes it is, Ann. 🙂
That truly is one gorgeous bridge. Thanks for the info about it. Sandee, you and Zane have a really good day.
You’re most welcome on the info. I’m guessing most folks know what bridge this is without me telling them. You have a good day too, Marg. 🙂
I have my own version of this photo on my wall from a CA visit in ’89.
Yep, there are many versions of this bridge. 🙂
Sandee,
Great photo! Bridges that cross large bodies of water are so cool but a bit scary to cross. 🙂 Happy WW!
I don”t like heights, but bridges don’t seem to bother me. Happy WW to you too Cathy. 🙂
We’ve never been to CA, but Mom has been too many times to count an says San Fran has so many great things to see, including this bridge. Maybe some day we will road trip it out there.
You might want to check out what”s going on in the city before you come. It’s not a place I will visit anymore. 🙂
The Mom has a fear of bridges but she had to drive across that one several times when she was there on business a few years ago.
It’s not so bad on that bridge. If you’re in the center lanes your view of the water is very limited. 🙂
Meowser, I love, love, love bridges, but we don’t have an big beautiful red ones here. Our local bridges are whiteish concrete and they span mainland to barrier island (Florida’s Space Coast a.k.a. Treasure Coast – depends if you purrfer Kennedy Space Center or looking for ancient sunken treasure ships) Anymeow, back to my bridges, there are two types of them: really tall ones that sailboats can fit under OR shorter bridges which have sections that open up and little houses for operators to be in to take the calls from ships as well as judge car traffic…. I think your big read one is beautiful!
Purrseidon
I have been to the spot where this photo was taken. It’s a popular vantage point for viewing the bridge.
It is indeed. Sometimes it’s very crowded. 🙂
I’m used to the bridges that open for boats. We open some now and then to get from point A to point B. 🙂
That is just breathtaking….
Hugs Cecilia
It is even more breathtaking in person. Hugs back. 🙂
No matter how many times I see the Golden Gate Bridge, I marvel every single time. It really is magnificent.
Thanks for sharing, Sandee, and for hosting the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop. Have a wonderful Wednesday. 🙂
That makes two of us. You have a wonderful Wednesday too. 🙂
Would love to see it in person. It’s a beautiful bridge!
I’ve been over it by car and by foot. It’s a beautiful bridge indeed. 🙂
It is beautiful and definitely one of those iconic structures you easily recognize.
OK, quick heads up I am heading out and might be spotty on my visiting for a while. I will be back though 🙂
See you when we see you. Have fun. 🙂
It certainly is one of the most beautiful bridges, and it has aged very well.
They work on it year around too. I’ve a friend that set up the structures for painting the bridge. That’s what he spent his career doing. 🙂
It was built back when they made quality stuff.
Yes indeed, Kismet. 🙂
Oh like most ~ I love this bridge and San Francisco ~ loved the cable cars! ~ Xox to you from me and Ms. Z ~
Happy Day to you,
A ShutterBug Explores,
aka (A Creative Harbor)
The city was a great place to visit at one time. Not anymore. The homeless have taken over much of it and it’s nasty. 🙂
No doubt, one of the most beautiful bridges in the world! Happy Wednesday!
I’m pretty sure you’re right about that. Lots of history too. 🙂
I’ve never been to San Fransisco but hope to see it one day. A trip to Napa is on the bucket list.
Oh the wine country is a great place to visit. 🙂
You haven’t really been to the bridge until you have had a tower tour. You go to the top of the one of the towers and walk around. It is amazing. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
I’ll pass on that. Too afraid of heights for that and hubby would never do that. 🙂
Such a beautiful sight in what was once such a beautiful city. My last trip there was my last trip there.
I wouldn’t go back either, Jan. Too much poop, drug paraphernalia and crooks. Horrible place. The city is losing millions in conferences. Nobody will go anymore. 🙂
Hah! we were just there a few days ago- have a lovely albeit wet day!
It’s not rained today, but it will return tomorrow. Sigh. 🙂
Surely, one of the most iconic bridges! However, bridges make me nervous in the service, so I’d have to be a passenger, and ride along with my eyes closed! LOL!
Hubby hates driving across bridges too. Scares him to piece. 🙂
I don’t travel, but if I did, I would go to see it. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day! XO
You would love both bridges, but the Gate is the best looking of the two. 🙂
I was there in 1987 – that seemed like a lifetime ago. I hope to see it again someday.
Happy WW, Sandee.
That was a long time ago. It’s not the city it once was, but the bridge is. 🙂
I am so afraid of heights. It is horrible how bad I get, my legs start shaking and I start having a panic attack I get so scared, it is a terrible feeling it truly is. Have a great day honey, love you & miss bunches ❤
Hubby and I walked across the bridge many years ago. It’s a long walk but I enjoyed it. Hubby wouldn’t get near the rail. 🙂
Oh my gosh, I am scared just thinking of that walk Sandee. There is no way, lol! Love you bunches honey ❤
It was years ago. We are far more scared now. 🙂
Love that bridge, such a beautiful photo of it too!
Yes it is and to see it in person it’s even more beautiful. 🙂
An iconic American landmark–never seen it in real life though.
If you’re ever near take the time. It’s magnificent. 🙂
Love that bridge however I have never seen it in person. Would love to visit it but tend to stay in Southern Calif when I go out.
You’re probably better off in southern California. The traffic is horrible in the city. 🙂
I have a phobia of high bridges, so I don’t think I’d enjoy crossing that one!! 🙂
Hubby has a fear of heights too and he doesn’t like bridges at all. 🙂
Magnificent bridge. I saw it one time, but we were going over the Bay Bridge.
Happy Wednesday! <3
It’s pretty from the bay bridge too. 🙂
I have never seen the bridge in person but one day I hope I will! xoxo
I hope you do too, Caren. It’s beautiful. 🙂
It’s beautiful. We went over it once, on a family vacation to California over 40 years ago. It is impressive in person.
It’s beautiful from land or by water. 🙂
Sandee…an iconic sight in California. When I was a kid we traveled over it frequently to my aunt and uncle’s home in San Rafael. I was always frighted that it would break, and we would fall in the bay and drown. Now it just hurts my heart when I see it, as someone I knew jumped off and committed suicide. Still, it does remain a wonder. Thanks for linking us up. XOCK, angel Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy and Sawyer
I’m so sorry about your friend jumping off the bridge. Many have and so few have survived. 🙂
Wow, long bridge! Mom and dad were on it. Mom was navigating and managed to get them lost in San Francisco with a 35 foot 5th wheel. The hills, the hills! What did mom do? Whenever mom gets really nervous she laughs. This didn’t go over big with dad.
Shoko
There are many hills in the city. Some are very steep too. I wouldn’t have wanted to navigate the pulling a 5th wheel. 🙂
What a beautiful bridge. I used to live near it!
It’s a beautiful bridge. I’m always amazed at its beauty. 🙂
We live south of SF, born and raised, it is a beautiful bridge indeed! We used to go across it all the time! SF was one of my favorite places ~ butts now it’s in transition because of the high cost of rents and the homeless. It’s starting to get a little better, butts it will be some years before it will be back to the way it was. I have hope it will be though.
Anyhu, Thanks for the beautiful shot of our bridge ♥
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
We quit going to the city because of the homeless issues. I wonder if it will ever be back to what it used to be. 🙂
I love San Francisco! One of my favorite places
It used to be mine too, but not anymore. It’s such a nasty place now. 🙂
That’s too bad. It’s been about a decade since I used to live in Oakland and it used to be an easy Bart ride over there.
A beautiful and a well known bridge.
Yes indeed, Nancy. 🙂
Aww, the beautiful Golden Gate on a lovely day. 🌉
It’s a beautiful bridge indeed and seeing it on the water is even more impressive. 🙂
It always has such a beautiful glow to it.
The bridge is a classic San Francisco icon. I love walking across it.
I loved walking across it too. Zane not so much. 🙂
