WW is a simple blog post featuring a photo which conveys a message that speaks for itself without using words.

18th-century England

In 18th-century Europe and Britain, pineapples were the ultimate luxury status symbol, costing the equivalent of up to $8,000 because they were extremely difficult to grow in temperate climates and hard to ship without spoiling. Pineapples were so rare they were rented by the hour. People would hire one just to show off at parties! Source: TPD.EDU

  1. To rent one? Incredible idea. But I remember I read once about the relation between this fruit and the
pineal gland. There are many ideas related, that should be checked.
But anyway, I love pineapple. Thank you for the reminder!
Happy WW, dear Sandee! Hugs and love!❤️😘

  2. I imagine it was quite “the thing” to have a pineapple (and expensive too!) on the table. They are rather “other planet-like” in appearance aren’t they. They’re also delicious!!

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy

  3. If I ever get a chance to time-travel to that era, I’ll take a bunch of pineapples along and open a rental business.

I wonder what things we spent a lot of money on today that will seem amazing to people three hundred years from now.

  4. Dear Sandee, I absolutely love this image!!! Perfect for this theme, it speaks so well! Thank you so much for sharing, and thanks as well for adding my blog link to your post today. I really appreciate you.
I hope you are having a wonder filled week!

  5. Wow, this is such great information. It is amazing how value changes over time. Now, a pineapple is not as expensive, thank goodness.

Thank you for the always wonderful trivia, Sandee

Happy Wordless Wednesday. Peace to you, dear friend.

  6. I knew they were important, but not how important. In the Antebellum South, if you were visiting friends and staying at their home, being given a pineapple meant they’d loved having you but it was time for you to go home!

Scritches to Lil’ Bit and Squeaker from me, and you and Mr. Zane have a blessed week.

  7. People used to have parties just so people could have a photograph with the pineapple. Some of our iron fence posts from late 1800s and early 1900s have pineapples on the top of the spikes. I will try to remember to take a photo for you. And in Cabaret, the musical not the film, there was a song about how the pineapple the grocer gives her is more precious to her than diamonds or pearls…ha!

  8. Hard to believe pineapples were once more prized than jewels! Renting one just to impress guests sounds wild compared to today when we can enjoy them fresh and juicy anytime. Thanks for the fun history tidbit, Sandee

  9. OMG!!! No way!!! They cost more than gold… wow, mew’d have to be seriously wealthy then to buy one. If it were us back then, we would have made our own out of papier-mache, painted them real lifelike, sold them as lucky wealth magnets, made a fortune, and bought a country estate!!! MOL MOL Happy Sunday, Sandee, and thank mew as always for adding our links; mew are truly epic! 😻🐾😻🐾😻
