About April

April Fools Day began in France during the 16th century, after the New year calendar was moved from April 1st to January 1st. Those who continued to celebrate the April new year were considered fools, and often the victims of practical jokes. Today we just like to have a little fun with our friends!

Many festivals occur in April. In Washington DC, there is the beautiful Cherry Blossom Festival. New Orleans hosts its Jazz and Heritage Festival and Atlanta celebrates its annual Dogwood Festival. In St. Louis, thousands come out to participate in the annual Earth Day Festival.

April has two birth flowers. Both the daisy and the sweet pea are considered birth flowers for the month of April. The sweet pea signifies blissful pleasure, while daisies represent childhood innocence, loyalty, and purity. Source: Educate Today

  1. Pam and Teddy says:

April is usually a beautiful month in Virginia…..this year Spring has struggled a bit arriving but still there are signs of the change from ice and snow to flowers and warmth……we’re READY!

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy

    • Sandee says:

We’ve been having rain for the last two days and it’s wonderful. A gentle rain and it’s chilly. We’re loving it. Happy day and rest of the week. Love and hugs to you and lots of scritches to Teddy. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. My GBGV Life says:

Hopefully the dogwood festival in Atlanta isn’t too big as we have to drive through there during those dates! No festivals around here, it is just waiting for the ugly look to slowly turn green and in a couple weeks have some flowers pop up which might include the ever popular, not, dandelions!

    • Sandee says:

Spring has arrived in some places and not in others. I hope your drive turns out okay. Happy day and rest of the week. Scritches to the precious pups. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Suzana says:

I did not know that this day has a so old significance.
But my last video in the post offer another significance of this day.
Happy WW, dear Sandee! Hugs and love!โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜˜
Thank you for the Blog Hop.

  4. Mr. Ohh! says:

I may be a fool, but I think April is better as the new year. Spring is a far better start than the middle of winter. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ™ƒ

  5. Jackie's Photo Blog says:

I didn’t know the origin of April Fool’s Day. I have to admit I did just check before I commented in case this was an April Fool. It is all true, maybe I am the fool for having to check first!

  6. Ellen J Pilch says:

Very interesting facts about April Fool’s Day. I did not know any of this. Thanks for hosting. Have a nice day. XO

  7. Alana says:

I definitely won’t trust anything I will read online or be told today. I didn’t know its origin story, either. But, spring is here and I’m happy. Not an April Fool.

  8. Amy Sandy says:

Can you imagine someone switching our New Year from Jan 1 to any other date? I’d probably be the January fool!
Loved reading about this as well as the festivals and birth flowers.

  9. Cecilia C. Upchurch says:

My (much older by 15 years) cousin and her family lived in Maryland. When I was a teenager we often visited we often were able to see the Cherry Blossoms in full bloom.
Happy Easter hugs to you Sandee, Zane, Squeaker and L’bit
    Cecilia

    • Sandee says:

I would love to see the cherry blossoms. I love everything about spring. Love and hugs to you and Kit and scritches to all the kitties. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. CAAC says:

I was just wondering how April’s Fool came to be. Thanks for the tidbit of history. It certainly makes a lot of sense to celebrate a new year when life returns to our world again, but then that’s not true for all parts. I wonder if that’s why it got moved to Jan. 1st? Oh well…I’m now a little smarter thanks to you. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Suzette Benjamin says:

Thank you, Sandee, for the great information! I may have heard of the reason for April Fools’ Day before, but I had forgotten. Thanks for the wonderful reminder along with the beautiful flowers for this month.

April is such a refreshing month… lots of beginnings in nature and by extension… that sense of fresh starts.

Happy Wordless Wednesday, dear friend. Hugs.

    • Comedy Plus says:

I believe you. Spring is here.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. Double Pawkisses to the kitties and a big hug to Granny. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. MadSnapper says:

the only thing I knew about April Fool Day was the fact my brother 4 years young than I was drove me nuts on that day all day long playing pranks.. he grew out of it but I never forgot it.

  13. Kitties Blue says:

Mom says that she knew nothing about the origins of April Fools Day, and she appreciates you sharing that info. Thanks also for linking us up. 14. Natasha says:

I quite love both the April flowers, Sandee. Personal favs but then I have so many.
April fools days seems like a reminder to be goofy, and fun. We must look at the lighter side of life and take time to play. Thankfully for our furry companions, they ensure we get all of that. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Sandee says:

Being goofy and fun is a good thing every day. Looking on the lighter side of life is what we do. Love and hugs, sweet Natasha. ๐Ÿ™‚
