Monarch Butterflies

Butterflies are beautiful creatures with delicate, colorful wings that flutter through the air. But did you know that some butterflies travel long distances, and this migration is done every year? Monarch butterflies are one of the most famous migrating butterflies. In the summer, they live in northern United States and in Canada. But in the winter, they fly all the way to Mexico! This is a very long journey for such a small creature, but the monarchs amazingly always find their way back. Monarch butterflies start their migration in the fall. They fly south as a group, using the sunโ€™s position in the sky to help them navigate during their migration. They also use landmarks, such as mountains and rivers, to help them find their way. One of the most amazing of life around us, but, sadl, I fear for them. I saw perhaps two last year. We are taking steps to increase their numbers and I only hope it isn’t too late. They are amazing and beautiful. Alana ramblinwitham

Beautiful butterflies. I got to see them when they gather in Santa Cruz and Pismo Beach before the long journey south. They blanket the trees.

Momach Butterflies are so beautiful and such amazing migrators! I saw one of their resting spots in a California forest on one trip–the trees were covered with them!

  12. messymimi's meanderings says:

The Monarchs are fascinating, we see them here sometimes, as well as the Gulf Fritillaries which look so similar. You and Mr. Zane have a blessed week and give some extra scritches to Lil’ Bit and Squeaker from me, please.

    • Sandee says:

I love butterflies and bees and other adorable critters. They all have a purpose. You and Mr. Sweetie have a blessed day and rest of the week. Love and hugs. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Ingrid (Gattina) says:

You are right, butterflies are so beautiful. Unfortunately I noticed here that there are less and less, last year I haven’t seen a single one and the last one had lost all colors. Unfortunately my cats loved them and played with them ….

    • Sandee says:

They are and cats love playing with critters until they die. Our Squeaker love to play with flies. We’re good with that. She keeps the house fly free all summer long. Scritches to Rosie. ๐Ÿ™‚
