Winter & the Sun

Earth is closest to the sun in (the Northern Hemisphere’s) winter. Every January (the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere), Earth reaches perihelion, the point in its orbit that’s nearest to the sun. Despite some common misconceptions, the seasonal drop in temperature has nothing to do with the distance of our planet to the sun. Instead, it relates to the direction Earth’s axis is tilting, which is why the two hemispheres experience winter at different times of the year. Source: Mental Floss

    The sun looks lovely against the snow. We see very little of it at this time of year, but when we do, being so low it dazzles our eyes.

  9. Beautiful photo and information, Sandee. Thanks for the introduction to a new word too, “perihelion.” Nature is so amazing; its movements in contrast to one’s expectations, the sun closer as the earth brings the Northwest the cold…how amazing and thoughtfully kind God is.

  11. Betty – Hello, I am Betty, the author of this blog, and this is my husband, Dan. I retired on 6/30/2018, and Dan retired about a year later, on 5/31/2019. Now that we are both retired, we plan to travel most often in our 23FBKS Micro Lite travel trailer. We also hope to travel other ways occasionally, such as taking a cruise, a roadtrip, perhaps a tour someday. In addition to travel, we like to walk, ride bikes, read, and play Scrabble. I love to write. This blog chronicles our travels in retirement. My purpose in writing this blog is: 1) to offer insight for those who may be making similar trips/adventures in the future 2) to share our adventures with family and friends who care to read and 3) to capture the memories for us.   16. When I was younger I enjoyed acceptable cold weather (not sub-zero) and a few inches of snow were perfectly fine. Now, I enjoy winter best in photos, sitting in my recliner. Beautiful image.

  33. Yep, we are closer, but tilted away, and that’s just enough to do the trick. It’s amazing how God thought of everything when making our world.

  34. It’s always amazed me that, for us in the Northern Hemisphere, winter comes when we are closest to the sun. And, since we may get a foot of snow this weekend, I will probably have a lot of snow beauty to look at soon. And to shovel, lol. Alana ramblinwitham

I got my Wing Commander status in September 2018 but that hasn't slowed me up at all! I tweet, Instacat, FB, Tumble & Pin too and now there's Basil TV on YouTube. All in all I'm a thoroughly Modern Cat; a cat of the 21st century, mew might say.
