Brooke Shields Calvin Klein Ad
In the fall of 1980, a fresh-faced 15-year-old Shields stared into the camera with a disarming confidence far beyond her years. Dressed in form-fitting denim and framed by a sultry gaze, she purred a single, now-immortal line: โYou want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.โ (The famous line is often misquoted as โNothing comes between me and my Calvins.โ)
It was a campaign that exploded into the American consciousness with the force of a cultural earthquake. It launched Calvin Klein jeans into the stratosphere, solidified Shields as a household name, and ignited a firestorm of controversy that questioned the boundaries between fashion, advertising and the sexualization of young girls. Forty-five years later, it remains one of the most provocative โ and pivotal โ moments in fashion history. Source: 29 Secrets

Interesting I have never owned a pair of calvin Klein jeans!
I’ve never owned a pair either, bit she looked fabulous in those jeans. ๐
WHAT FUN TO KNOW THIS! Loved that ad and yes, lots of controversy over it….
I don’t see anything wrong with this ad. She’s beautiful. ๐
I vaguely remember the ad, but I do remember owning Calvin Kleins, Levi Strauss (with the white patch on the pocket, of course), Sassoon subtle pin stripe jeans, and of course, the Jordache jeans. You had to have a pair of those. My mom wouldn’t buy them (or couldn’t buy them) so when I got a pair from my aunt for Christmas I remember being over the moon. Have a wonderful day!
I remember when I looked good in jeans. Happy day and rest of the week, my friend. Hugs. ๐
She was gorgeous then and she’s still a beautiful woman. I love my jeans but I never looked that good in themโบ
I looked that good for many years. I was tall and weighed 110 pounds for years. My nickname was Slim. I miss those days. ๐
I remember that commercial…….she sure has come a long way since that commercial was BIG – she was a gorgeous teen and has kept her beauty all these years.
Hugs, Pam
I agree. She’s a most beautiful woman. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to handsome Teddy. ๐
Very interesting, I knew none of this, not even the quote and never saw an ad. I had no TV at that time and even before that we had a tiny 19 inch that belonged to husband and two sons, I have always preferred reading.
I remember this ad and thought she was most beautiful. Prayers to you and Bob and lots of scritches to handsome beau. ๐
Brooke Shields really made this ad unforgettable.
Happy Wednesday, Sandee!
She sure did. Everyone wanted to look like her. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week, Veronica. ๐
I remember my mother making a big fuss about her role in The Blue Lagoon. She’s now acting in a Hallmark series
I remember that movie. She was so beautiful. Happy rest of the week, Ann. A hug to you and lots of scritches and an extra treat to Gibbs. ๐
She was very beautiful then, and still is now. I have never owned a pair of Kalvin Kleins. I was always a Levi’s girl.
I agree with you, Jackie. The young gals wanted to look like her. I so remember. Hugs, my friend. ๐
I remember the ad. She’s still as gorgeous as ever. Happy Wednesday!
I agree with you, Eugenia. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week. ๐
๐
According to Mom, Brooke Shields was really something and Mom had to have Calvin Klein jeans after those ads. She was in high school so being trendy was important.
I get it. I never had those jeans, but they were very popular after this ad. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week. Scritches to the pups. ๐
I sort of remember that commercial. We werenโt allowed to watch too much television as little kids, so I was probably outside playing when it came on.๐
We weren’t allowed to watch much television either, but I remember this ad. Happy rest of the week, my friend. ๐
Memories! Do I ever remember this, and all the fuss made over it. Alana ramblinwitham
I remember the fuss too, but I thought it was a most wonderful ad. ๐
As a young man not much older than she was, I could never get past her pics or movies without significant temptation to lust. Eventually, she seemed to have gotten over it, as I did as Jesus got a hold of me. I wish her peace with The God Who Is.
I thought she was beautiful then and is still beautiful now. Happy WW and rest of the week. ๐
I remember that one too, it was quite the big thing for a while!
It sure was a big thing for a while. I love this ad. Scritches to the kitties. ๐
I remember that ad. I was 11 so I didn’t actually want my own. Never been much into jeans. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day. XO
Jeans were mostly what I wore for a very long time. Still do, but not as much. Loved the ad though. She was and is most beautiful. Scritches to the kitties. ๐
It’s funny how one set of images can launch a career.
And launch a career it did. Happy WW and rest of the week, my friend. ๐
Good Morning Sandee.
I will never forget one time an older lady at church told my daughter she had eyebrows like Brook Shields. She was 13 a bit perplexed at the comment as was I. Weird thing to say. She was starting to get interested in light makeup. I made an appointment for her at the Clinque Counter. She wore light make up for a while then it got to be too much trouble.
Hugs cecilia
That’s a weird comment indeed. I can’t remember how long it has been since I wore makeup. Years and years. Made Zane very happy when I quit the makeup. Love and hugs to you and Kit and lots of scritches to the kitties. ๐
Calvin Klein, Jordache and Gloria Vanderbuilt’s jeans…I remember them well LOL. In fact, I still wear Gloria Vanderbuilt’s….but they are a bunch less expensive and fit a lot better than they did “back in the day”
I’ll have to check that out. Happy WW and rest of the week. Scritches to the precious pups. ๐
It was quite a unique ~ Brooke Shields became quite a sensation ~ thanks for info ~
Hugs and love to you and family ~ xo
She sure was a sensation. She was beautiful then and now. Happy WW and rest of the week. Love and hugs to you and Ziggy. ๐
Provocative indeed. I may say I am glad I did not liked fashion and its trends.
I feel free…
Thank you for something new for me, dear Sandee.
Happy WW and a fine week! Hugs and joy.๐๐
I liked the trends, but couldn’t afford them. It was the way of things. Love and hugs, Suzana. ๐
I remember those ads and all the jeans commercials back then. Have a great Wednesday and rest of the week!
I remember this ad very well. I thought she rocked those jeans. ๐
Granny had a lot of jeans, but neffurr a Calvin Klein’s, nor the looks of Brooke Shields๐บShe really is a beautiful Lady๐ปDouble Pawkisses for a Happy Day to you and week ahead, to you, Zane and the kitties too๐พ๐ฝ๐
I had a lot of jeans too, but they were cheap jeans. I couldn’t afford most of the name brand ones. Double Pawkisses to you both and a big hug to your wonderful Granny. ๐
I understand the need for shock and awe in brand marketing. But I wish they didn’t use children to do it. Many of the young models and child actors could still have been successful if they had started their careers later. It makes me so sad thinking of my daughter and how those young girls and boys were robbed of a real childhood. (Unscripted Mom Life & At Crafty Cottage)
I hear you, but I didn’t see anything wrong with this ad. Youth and jeans just go together. Happy WW and rest of the week. ๐
I remember the commercial and the controversy.
I remember both, too. I loved the ad though. She was quite beautiful young lady. ๐
Yep, both Calvin Kleins and Brook Shields are household names now.
They sure are. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week. Scritches to the pups. ๐
I vaguely remember the controversy, but I liked the ad and Brooke. Even though I could not afford that brand, I loved jeans back then. Thanks for the memories. Those were some formative and character-building years, with many firsts, a full-time job, and other things I am grateful for from the 80s that I had not thought of in years.
Happy Wordless Wednesday, Sandee. Blessings, much love, and hugs to you, dear friend.
I like this ad too. I don’t see it as a bad thing. She was beautiful then and beautiful now. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week. Love and hugs. ๐
Agreed. Thank you, dear friend. Grace and peace to you.
I remember the ad. I never owned a pair of Calvin Cline anything. I was never into designer clothing then or now but anyway, 15 is way too young for such provocative ad. I didn’t pay much attention to those things back then because I was a 19-year old kid and not a mom yet. Growing older helps you to see these things but it’s becoming a parent really makes you go, “Woe that’s not cool!” I wanted to lock my 15 year old in a closet, if I could, to protect her from predators. Cool flash back, but I don’t know where the last 45 years went, though.
I was a mother by then, but to a boy, not a girl. I get it. Happy rest of the week, Cathy. Love and hugs. ๐
It’s hard to be parent to both boys and girls but you always feel a bit more guarded toward girls. They are easy targets. It’s so scary. Thanks for stopping by, Sandee. You have a good rest of the week, too. xo
It’s a beautiful ad! I loved it back then.
I agree. I loved this ad. Happy day and rest of the week. ๐
She was quite beautiful in this.
As for jeans, I wear them daily to work in. It doesn’t matter if I look good in them, I need work clothes and I buy boys jeans in the boys department because they are meant to be rugged.
She was beautiful in this ad. I see nothing wrong with this ad. I know you need rugged clothes in your line of work. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week. Love and hugs, my friend. ๐
Given her age it is kind of creepy
If that were me back then I’d be proud. A wonderful memory of youth. ๐
Looks stunning, Interesting story.
Thanks a lot for sharing.
She was and still is stunning. ๐
An iconic image of a very beautiful woman, Sandee.
Yes and yes. Scritches to handsome Wilson and a big hug to you. ๐
This is all new to me – I never realised they made jeans with legs that long!
Yes, they make jeans with legs that long. Happy day and weekend, Keith. ๐
Have you seen the film “Pretty Baby?” At age 11 (!) she had nude scenes. ~shudder~ Take my advice and don’t Google anything about it. ๐ Meanwhile, she’s enjoying life and penned a new memoir I might need to read. Hugs and blessings, my dear.
I didn’t know this. Yikes. Hugs and blessings back. ๐
Sandee, given her age I thought when this first wow she it really being exploited because of her age.
Perhaps she was. I loved this ad. Feel better, Mike. Scritches to Screwball. ๐
