All About Walking

The average person walks the equivalent of five times around the world in their lifetime. Unless you’re a bit of a couch potato, you will, on average, walk around 7,500 steps daily. The average person lives until they’re 80, so it works out that you’ll walk about 110,000 miles (177,027 km) in your lifetime.

The circumference of the Earth at the equator is 24,900 miles (40,072 km). Providing you’re an average person who takes average strides and lives an average length of time, it’s entirely possible to walk the globe five times! Source: The Fact Site

Oops, wish I hadn’t read this! Or looked at my watch, which tracks my “steps” … some days (too many days) pitifully low and way beneath that average number given here. I’m bad, so bad … of course, my other numbers aren’t tracking all that great either. Maybe the best thing to do: get rid of the watch?

    • Sandee says:

I wasn’t walking enough either and dumped my Fitbit (didn’t count my steps properly) and purchased a Samsung Galaxy Watch 7. It does count my steps properly. I go for 10,000 steps and day. So far so good. 🙂

I wear a fitness device and some days, I don’t even get above 5,000 steps. The most I’ve done is around 12,000 steps.. Unlike me, my son has an active job and I think he’s done 24,000 steps or more in a day. Many of us here do tend to be too sedentary. Alana ramblinwitham

My Mom and Dad used to do more walking in recent years but with hip replacement, arthritis, crummy weather this summer, etc. they have “slipped” a bit !! BUT they’re doing their best and that’s what counts.

    Hugs, Teddy

    • Sandee says:

I walk inside so I never have to worry about the weather anymore. You can’t get me to walk outside when it’s hot or cold. Inside works for me. Big hug to Pam and lots of scritches to Teddy. 🙂

  4. My GBGV Life says:

Mom probably walks a lot more than that. She had one of those watches that counted steps for a while but decided it was stupid for her as most days she has 10,000 steps before breakfast. During the week about 20K total and on weekends 30K steps. We like to stay active around our house. It is more fun to track steps in times around the globe. She might like a watch that did that!

  5. Memories of Eric and Flynn says:

When the facts are put like that, it is amazing how far we walk in our lifetime. Unfortunately my walking is restricted to short distances and I have to resort to the wheelchair for anything longer.

    • Sandee says:

I’ve slowed down a lot in the last five years, but I walk six days a week and 10,000 steps a day. My doctor says if you just walk 10 minutes a day it will allow you to live longer. Love and hugs, Jackie. 🙂

  6. Suzana says:

I do not have a special device for this subject. The idea is to walk and feel good. And if we don’t, also we
have to walk, because moving is life saving! Of course, gym is always perfect to practice, if we can.
Happy WW, dear Sandee. I love the first image, perfect for the soul.
    Hugs and a fine week!❤️😘

    • Sandee says:

Moving is life saving indeed. Hubby and I have watched to many folks retire and then sit in their chairs and watch television. They are all gone now. We don’t want that. Love and hugs, my friend. It good to have you back. 🙂

    • Sandee says:

Yay, you made it indeed. I always link you up if you don’t. Yes this is a very interesting tidbit. Love and hugs to you and scritches to all the kitties. 🙂

  7. 15andmeowing says:

Very interesting. That is a lot of steps. No wonder why a lot of people need hip and knee replacements. Thanks for hosting. Have a nice day. XO

    • Sandee says:

Walking is a good thing. I enjoy it. Six days a week, I’m walking. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. Big hug to you and scritches to all the kitties. 🙂

  8. Cecilia Upchurch says:

Sandee what wonderful info on walking. We (as you and Zane) are walkers. Of late we walk in climate controlled mall due to excessive heat and heat index. We walk 6 days a week for 30-40 minutes averaging at least 4,000 steps. Not bad for two old codgers. MOL MOL
    Hugs cecilia

I walk six days a week and take Wednesdays off. I walk at least10,000 steps a day. Yes walking is a good thing and my doctor says if you walk at least 10 minutes a day it makes a big difference. Love and hugs to you and Kit and scritches to all the kitties. 🙂

    • Sandee says:

I love my morning walks and go for 10,000 steps a day. I’ll walk until I get there. Happy WW and rest of the week. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂

    • Sandee says:

Hubby is far more active than I am and he loved to run. He could run 10 miles a day and loved every step. His knees won’t allow running anymore. I do 10,000 steps a day six days a week. 🙂

  9. an artist reflects says:

Great info ~ Sandee on walking~ Besides the usual steps daily ~ Ziggy and I walk just about every day except for excessive humidity or cold ~ Clears my head and makes my fur person happy ~ hugs,

Hugs and love to you, Zane and the fur babies ~ xo

Wishing you good health, laughter and love in your days ~ xo

It does clear our heads and pups love to go for several walks a day. They need to check the pee mail. Love and hugs to you and handsome Ziggy. 🙂

  10. Suzette Benjamin says:

I was thinking about walking more just the other day in fact…how surrendipitous.
I did not know the fact about how much one actually walks. Amazing trivia. Thanks Sandee.
Happy Wordless Wednesday. Hugs and Much love to you!

  11. CatSynth says:

Interesting perspective. As a city person, I tend to walk a fair amount, so I expect to do more than five earths if my lifetime 🌎

  12. yvonne473 says:

My husband and I loved to walk but with the humidity we had to stop. So annoying. We keep saying we’re going to go to the mall and walk there but we never get around to it. We’re hoping to at least get to the gym in our community. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week!

    • Sandee says:

Moving is key to good health. Hubby and I are in our 70s and we know the importance of moving. Happy Wednesday and rest of the week, Yvonne. Hugs. 🙂

  13. The OP Pack says:

Those are some very interesting facts. Mom tries to get at least 10,000 steps in a day. But she often doesn’t have pockets in her pants and can’t really carry her phone everywhere with her. But we do our best to keep her walking every day.

Holy smokes. Five times around the world?
We average about 15,000/day. It sure helps to have a standing desk, so I can walk and type/think at the same time. 🙂
    Have a wonderful Wednesday, Sandee!

  15. kittiesblue says:

OMG … that is absolutely amazing! Mom does not walk that much, so she might only make it around four times. She has ridden 16,600 miles on the Peloton, but it has taken seven years! Walking is a gift. 🙂
Here to say hello. I’m off for the summer and thought I’d be visiting blogs/blogging like crazy. Things didn’t turn out that way, lol. School starts back up in 2 weeks already. Summer flew by!! Hope all is well there! All is dandy here.

  18. Smudge says:

My mom and dad sorely miss their routine hikes in the western NC mountains but try to walk around this place as often as they can. They’re getting ready as I type for yet another long section of the Delaware River Canal Tow Path. Dad’s job has him walking anywhere from 13,000 to 25,000 steps a day on average.
