German Chocolate Cake

German chocolate cake was invented in Texas. The “German” part of German chocolate cake comes from an American man—not a European country. Specifically, it’s named after Sam German, who in 1852 created the formula for a mild dark baking chocolate bar for Baker’s Chocolate Company, which was subsequently named Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate. Fast-forward to June 13, 1957. The Dallas Morning Star published the recipe for the cake, invented and submitted by a reader identified as Mrs. George Clay, according to What’s Cooking America.

I’m German and did not know that German chocolate cake was invented in Texas. Fascinating! And it’s delicious. Happy Wednesday, Sandee, and thanks for hosting this link party. 🙂

Well, Ms Sandee, that photo says other things to us….was that intentional? Love your posts, merci. I always click on “save my name, email and website”. But they are not saved. No problem, just wanted to pass that on. Have a positive Wednesday.

  3. Memories of Eric and Flynn says:

I have never heard of German chocolate cake and would have assumed it was from Germany and not Texas.

  4. Suzette Benjamin says:

Oh gosh, now I have a hankering for chocolate cake. thanks Sandee for the interesting facts. I did think that German Chocolate Cake was of german origin. Suddenly I am hungry. Thank you Sandee for your hard work supporting the WP Community. Have a good Wordless Wednesday.

    Yummmy chocolate is my weakness
We awoke to 2″ of snow it was dry and fluffy so we were able to sweep it off no shovel required.
It is gonna be only mid 20’s today so we didn’t want it to freeze. OMDs my daughter and son in law and kitties live on the coast of NC . Snow there is RARE…they had 5.5″ over night. Hardly any snow removal equipment there so they are working from home
    Hugs Cecilia

Not a big chocoholic and THAT’s about the only chocolate cake I really enjoy. Now I know it’s not because of my German heritage, but because of my love for all things Texan!🤠Yee-haw!!!

  8. The OP Pack says:

What a clever image of the state of Texas!!! We learned something new today – always thought it was of German origin.

I never knew the interesting history behind it. It’s amazing how something so delicious can have such a unique origin story. Thanks for sharing this sweet slice of trivia! 😊

  11. CAAC says:

German chocolate cake was my late FIL’s favorite. Every time I see a recipe or a box mix I think of him. Personally, I prefer a more intense chocolate cake which is difficult to come by unless you make it. Lately, I’ve made two batches of classic crinkle cookies which is an excellent substitute. The fudgey chocolate goodness hits the spot right on!

  12. ghostmmnc says:

mmm German Chocolate Cake is a favorite of mine, too. 🙂
I think I’ve been missing your posts, because I don’t get many email notices any more for some reason. I’ll try to keep finding them, though. 🙂
