WW is a simple blog post featuring a photo which conveys a message that speaks for itself without using words.
For all the rule breakers, of which I am one, please feel free to add all the words you want.
Make sure you leave a link to your post and I’ll visit your Wordless Wednesday post.
Roller coasters were invented to distract Americans from sin!
In the 1880s, hosiery businessman LaMarcus Thompson hated that Americans were tempted by hedonistic places like saloons and brothels. So he set out to straighten up one of the most immoral places he could think of: Coney Island in New York. There, he built America’s first roller coaster to give New Yorkers some good, clean fun—away from seedier pastimes.
My favorite roller coaster was the Giant Dipper in San Diego, CA. Giant Dipper is a wooden roller coaster located at Belmont Park in the Mission Bay area of San Diego, California, USA. The ride was designed by Frank Prior and Frederick Church. Giant Dipper is considered a coaster landmark; having been first opened in 1925. Source: Coasterpedia
Linking up with a bunch of fantastic peeps from the blogosphere who host Wordless Wednesday – Betty, Steve, image-in-ing, Keith, Senior Salon, Esme Salon, CatSynth, and Suzana.

We had no idea that roller coasters existed for such a long time, Sandee. This one looks horrible. Granny only made a ride in one when she was about 10 years old. Although it was exciting, she never did it again and will🙈 Double Pawkisses for a Happy Wednesday and week ahead to you, Zane and the kitties too🐾😽💞
I’ll pass too. I loved riding them in my youth. My favorite was a wood one in San Diego. You could feel it swaying. Grand fun. 🙂
Well how cool is that. I didn’t realize the history there.
I didn’t either. It didn’t work, but he tried. 🙂
That roller coaster makes my tummy go flip flop just looking at it – being ON it would be “life-changing” !! EEEK!
Hugs, Pam
What we did in our youth is far different than what we do now. Hugs to you and scritches to Teddy. 🙂
I loved roller coasters when I was a whole lot younger!
You and I are on the same page about this. Scritches to Duke. 🙂
I never realised the reason for building them. I could never go on one like that, although I would go on the less scary ones when I was younger.
My body wouldn’t be able to handle this ride anymore. In my youth I loved them. Hugs, my friend. 🙂
Oooh I do love a rollercoaster that would be my dream to go on that heheh!
Thanks for hosting Sandee and linking up have a rollercoastertastic week 🎢 👍
I’m to old now, but loved them in my youth. Have a fabulous WW and rest of the week, Steve. 🙂
Mom and I drove by the local amusement park and she mentioned that she loves roller coasters but hasn’t been on one in years. They are not for everyone I guess. We never heard that they were created to keep people from doing bad things. Interesting train of thought.
I was surprised why they were created. It didn’t work, but gave many lots of fun. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
WOW, How could it be there, at such a speed? I am not sure I want to try!
But the image looks fabulous and… dangerous!
Happy WW, again, dear Sandee! Hugs and I like I find you again in a new year!
❤️😘
It gets your heart going. Loved riding them in my youth. Happy Wordless Wednesday, Suzana. Hugs. 🙂
What an interesting tidbit, Sandee! When I was a lot younger, I enjoyed rollercoasters but I would be scared to death to go on one now. Happy Wednesday! Hugs!
I loved them in my youth. Couldn’t do them now. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, Eugenia. Hugs. 🙂
Hugs backatcha! 😊
Roller Coasters vs brothels and saloons. Guess they were more of a thrill!! They used to be my favorite ride, but I just don’t do them anymore.
I think the brothels and saloons are more popular. I can’t ride on these anymore either. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
yesterdays post on your blog and on woos blog I could not find the comment box, not sure what is going on, its here one day and not another. since the word Fear is my middle name, since birth, I have never been on a roller coaster… I don’t think his idea worked, ha ha ha ha ha
WordPress has been doing some weird things of late. I rode them in my youth, but no more. I think I’d have a heart attack now. Scritches to Beau. 🙂
What a fun fact! I never really cared for roller coasters, and have only been on tiny ones when I was a kid.
Wishing you a wonderful Wednesday! <3
I rode them in my youth. They were fun then, but not now. Makes my stomach flip. Hugs, my friend. 🙂
My stomach does flips just looking at the picture!
Mine does too. I can’t do these rides anymore. 🙂
I did not know that, very interesting. Thanks for hosting. Have a nice day. XO
I didn’t know this either and was very surprised. Happy WW and rest of the week. Ellen. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
Very interesting and that is some fun looking roller coaster!
I was surprised by this tidbit. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
I never knew that. I hate roller coasters and never go on them.
I did in my youth, but won’t ride anything anymore. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. 🙂
What an interesting fact. Who would have guessed the origins of the roller coaster?
Happy Wednesday, Sandee. Thank you for hosting!
I would have never guessed this in a million years. A different time. Happy Wednesday, my friend. 🙂
How interesting and what a cool roller coaster!!
I had no idea why they were built. I was surprised. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
Sandee sending all kinds of prayers for all in California what horrible wildfires.
Whoa that is some loop da loop of curves and hills.
I am not a fan of traditional roller coasters but years ago I did find one at Busch Gardens,Virginia. We rode it about 4 times in a row..it was call The Big Bad Wolf. The passenger cars hung from a track…such fun
Hugs and Happy WW
Cecilia
They are in southern California. I rode them in my youth, but no more. We took our grand some years back and Zane went and I watched. I was the happy one. 🙂
Fascinating backstory about roller coasters. Some days I wonder if Thompson was all that successful but it sounds like it was, at least on Coney Island. 🙂
Perhaps you’re right about that. I had no idea. Scritches to the pups and a big hug to you. 🙂
Once upon a time (eons ago) our roller coaster Mom would have ridden this ride over and over. Nowadays she wouldn’t dare.
Woos – Misty and Timber
I did in my youth, but not anymore. It would be my end for sure. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
Wow, we learned something today!!!!
I did too. It didn’t work, but it was a nice try. 🙂
Speedier not seedier! I thought about going on the world’s fastest one last year in Abu Dhabi – but then I decided to just watch my son clinging on for dear life instead!
I would have done the same thing. Funny how this happened. I had no idea. 🙂
Interesting stuff. I used to love roller coasters, but not anymore. My stomach can’t handle it. LOL
I loved them in my youth, but not now. My stomach can’t handle it either. 🙂
oh wow! I have always loved a good ride on one of those things, and I have been on some that today I might not get on….I am thinking I would not get on this one. Last one I was on was in Gatlinburg, called the Alpine Sled and it was wild. First time I rode it was in Nov., sleet coming down and the rails were frozen. I asked about it and was showed that the car connection goes under the rails and hugs it. I figured, hell, why not
You are far more brave than I am. Loved them in my youth, but no more. Makes my stomach do a flip flop. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, Pam. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
Wow, thank you Sandee for this great information on the reason for Rollercoasters in the first place. I did not know about its purpose as a wholesome form of thrill entertainment. Thank you. I love these kind of bits of history trivia. Thank you very mush. As for rollercoasters and such rides.
Happy Wordless Wednesday. Thank you for your work supporting bloghops. Blessings to you my friend!
Thank you for always linking up, Suzette. Always a pleasure to see your link. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, my friend. Love and hugs. 🙂
I very happy to join in Sandee. Thank you for your generous support. And a wonderful rest of the week to you my friend. Hugs and Much love also!
I have been to Santa Cruz many times but I have never ridden The Big Dipper. I do the other rides there. Never have been a fan of roller coasters. I guess I don’t like the drops and everything. A beautiful pic. Thanks for hosting this great party and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
I’ve been on that one a few times. It’s okay, but nothing like the one in San Diego. Not even close. Have a wonderful day and rest of the week, Patrick. 🙂
Sandee, there is no way on earth that I am getting on that coaster!!
I won’t get on one anymore either. 🙂
That’s some interesting history. We went to Dollywood last month and came close to riding The Eagle but decided against it because we were afraid our eye glasses would fly off our faces. Plus, it was pretty chilly. Maybe another time we go it’ll be warmer and we’ll have eye glass straps. 🙂
If you ride it take a shot so we can see what it looks like. Like your new blog layout. Forgot to say that when I visited earlier today. Hugs. 🙂
Very interesting, never too old to learn new stuff.
Thanks, Sandee, thank you for hosting. May you have an awesome 2025
My entries this week are numbered #51+52
Hope you will join ES #WW https://esmesalon.com/tag/wordlesswednesday/ NOW OPEN
I had no idea either. It didn’t work, but it was a great idea for thrill rides. 🙂
Coasters can be such fun, you can fly without having to get in a plane, at least, that’s how it feels to me.
I pray you and Mr. Zane have a fabulous week and please give Lil’ Bit and Squeaker some pets from me.
I couldn’t take riding on one now, but loved them back in my youth. You and Mr. Sweetie have a blessed day and rest of the week. 🙂
Great post and photo ~ I loved the roller coaster ride ~ when I was about 12 I rode on one for about 5 times in a row ~ loved the thrill of it all ~ now ~ love serenity and peace ~
Hugs and love you and your family ~ ^_^
Wishing you good health, laughter and love in your days,

I loved it when I was young, but couldn’t take it at my age now. It’s all good. A fun time we both had. Love and hugs to you and Ziggy. 🙂
That is so cool! I used to love the rollercoasters growing up but we always went to Cedar Point in Ohio. Michigan has a couple of wooden rails but I’ve never ridden one. I wish I had before I had so many birthdays. xoxo
I loved them in my youth, but I couldn’t take that excitement now. Love you, Karen. 🙂
Sandee, thanks for linking us up. My favorite roller coaster was the wooden one on the boardwalk in Santa Cruz, CA. When I was a senior in high school, I rode it 17 times in a row in the rain! 🤪 Coop and Sawyer send purrs. Hugs, Janet
I’ve climbed all over the roller coaster in Santa Cruz, but never rode that one. We entered the part after it was closed. Almost got caught too. Scritches to all the kitties, a smooch to Cooper Murphy and Sawyer and a huge hug to you. 🙂
Whoa! That’s fascinating. Blessings and hugs, my dear.
I had no idea how roller coaster were born. Hugs, my friend. 🙂
I may be too old for Roller coasters now, but I hope not. Many of the most fun days I’ve spent in the last 60 years have taken place in amusement parks and Roller Coasters are a big reason for that. I usually don’t post this late, but while grabbing a snack between my jobs today, I got my inspiration and remembered how to post on my blog by sending an email. https://dave-homeschooldad.blogspot.com/2025/01/wordless-wednesday-deconstructed.html
I’m too old for them now, but loved them in my youth. I also loved your deconstructed root beer float too. It was delicious. 🙂
Wait, what? I had no idea they were originally intended as a wholesome alternative to saloons and brothels. It’s funny how things evolve. The Giant Dipper sounds like a classic.
I had no idea either. Very interesting. Have a great day and rest of the week, Lux. 🙂
We grew up in a rollercoaster town. Everyone had a season pass to the amusement park and parents would let their kids go over unsupervised (we never got in trouble, and were always home on time). We all practically lived at the park and it had some of the fastest, tallest rollercoasters in the world. It still does, and it’s 1/4 of the price of a Disney ticket.
How fun. Roller coasters are a fun thing for many. I love a good park that keeps kids entertained. Love and hugs, my friend. 🙂
Sandee, will you please keep us posted about fires coming near you? It may be silly but I’m a worrier. 🙂 Love you. Stay safe. Oh! I turned on Dog TV for Beau. He loves it!!
We live in central California, so we’re a very long way from the fires in southern California. We’re fine, they are not. Love you. 🙂
WOW, we never knew that!!! Happy Sunday Sandee, we hope mew are having a supurr blessed day, and thank mew so much for adding our links this week, mew are EPIC!!! 🐾🐾😻🐾🐾
I didn’t know it either. It didn’t work, but it was a nice try. Love and hugs to you and the kitties. 🙂
Funny, I could’ve sworn I left a comment earlier! I stopped by again to see your reply, but it seems my comment vanished. Anyway, I just wanted to share that I’m not much of a rollercoaster fan—I feel much happier enjoying a ride on the merry-go-round!
Perhaps WordPress is acting up again. Sometimes weird things happen. Glad you did another comment. Happy week, Veronica. 🙂
