2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke’s 1951 short story “The Sentinel” and other of his short stories. Clarke also published a novelisation of the film, in part written concurrently with the screenplay, after the film’s release. The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain and follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.

The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Kubrick avoided conventional cinematic and narrative techniques; dialogue is used sparingly, and there are long sequences accompanied only by music. The soundtrack incorporates numerous works of classical music, including pieces by composers such as Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss II, Aram Khachaturian, and György Ligeti.

Principal photography began on 29 December 1965, in Stage H at Shepperton Studios, Shepperton, England. The studio was chosen because it could house the 60-by-120-by-60-foot (18 m × 37 m × 18 m) pit for the Tycho crater excavation scene, the first to be shot. In January 1966, the production moved to the smaller MGM-British Studios in Borehamwood. Source: Wikipedia

That looks like a great movie, Sandee. We haven’t seen that one…yet…but we know the song, so maybe we can dance a little♪♫♪ 😸😸 Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day to you, the Kitties and Zane too🐾😽💞

Well, I’m certainly old enough to remember this ground breaking er’ space breaking movie. It seems lately there is some return to this genre. There’s an infinity yet to explore.

  3. My GBGV Life says:

Mom has never had any interest in space or space movies. She had to see Star Wars when it came out but she didn’t like it at all. Space is not her thing but everyone likes different things and we have never seen this movie.

I was a senior in high school when this movie came out. I was so fortunate to see it then. Hubby and I rewatched in recently and still love it just as much. 🙂

OMCs do I recall going to that movie…..neither of us were into all the space movies but we felt we needed to see this one. We loved the music but the movie put us to sleep. As did Chariots of Fire…loved the music.
    Hugs Cecilia

I do remember going to the movies to see this one. For the times, it was really impressive. I’ve watched it since, and it seems so slow, in that there isn’t much action like the movies these days. But I liked it anyway.
Wishing you a wonderful Wednesday. ♥

A science fiiction classic! Great details on the filming and its scientific accuracy! That I did not know that. I was a bit young to have watched this when it first came out… but I certainly saw it years later. I enjoyed the music in this movie too. Strauss is a favorite of mine. Happy Wednesday Sandee.

A true classic movie. Did you that HAL actually was making fun of IBM as the letters of HAL are right before IBM.

Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.

  9. CatSynth says:

2001 is a classic that still holds up today – I’ve seen it many times. It does, however, leave me a little melancholy that even all these years after 2001 we don’t have the technology or routine space travel that they had.

  10. Debbie D. says:

I remember seeing this movie when it first came out. The technology was amazing! Fun fact: HAL, the computer, got his name from IBM. Think about it for a second. 😁

Excellent choice! I’m late, it’s Thursday, and as if that isn’t bad enough I added ANPITS to the linky list when I posted another post today. I don’t know how that happened, I just wanted to see your post and leave a comment. I’m sorry, can you delete my link? Anyway, I love your photo!

    “Hugs” and love,
