2001: A Space Odyssey
2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke’s 1951 short story “The Sentinel” and other of his short stories. Clarke also published a novelisation of the film, in part written concurrently with the screenplay, after the film’s release. The film stars Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, and Douglas Rain and follows a voyage by astronauts, scientists, and the sentient supercomputer HAL to Jupiter to investigate an alien monolith.
The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of space flight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Kubrick avoided conventional cinematic and narrative techniques; dialogue is used sparingly, and there are long sequences accompanied only by music. The soundtrack incorporates numerous works of classical music, including pieces by composers such as Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss II, Aram Khachaturian, and György Ligeti.
Principal photography began on 29 December 1965, in Stage H at Shepperton Studios, Shepperton, England. The studio was chosen because it could house the 60-by-120-by-60-foot (18 m × 37 m × 18 m) pit for the Tycho crater excavation scene, the first to be shot. In January 1966, the production moved to the smaller MGM-British Studios in Borehamwood. Source: Wikipedia

That looks like a great movie, Sandee. We haven’t seen that one…yet…but we know the song, so maybe we can dance a little♪♫♪ 😸😸 Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day to you, the Kitties and Zane too🐾😽💞
It’s a fabulous movie. Mind bending, but worth the watch. Double Pawkisses to the kitties and a big hug to you. 🙂
Well, I’m certainly old enough to remember this ground breaking er’ space breaking movie. It seems lately there is some return to this genre. There’s an infinity yet to explore.
You’re right about the infinity yet to explore. Scritches to Dani. 🙂
That is one that I never saw.
I was a senior in high school when I saw this movie. Hubby and I watched it again recently. It’s still a great movie. 🙂
I remember this film very popular still is 🙂
Have an odysseytastic week Sandee and thanks for hosting 👍
It sure is still popular. Happy Wordless Wednesday, my friend. 🙂
LOVED THAT FILM!!!! Long and worth every moment. Merci.
I agree with you, Loulou. Happy rest of the week. 🙂
I’ve never watched that one.
It’s deep and well worth the watch. 🙂
I know also this movie, I am thrilled…
Interesting image. I like the presentation.
Happy WW, dear Sandee!. Hugs and a fine week!❤️😘
It’s a classic. I love this movie. Loved it then and love it now. 🙂
Mom has never had any interest in space or space movies. She had to see Star Wars when it came out but she didn’t like it at all. Space is not her thing but everyone likes different things and we have never seen this movie.
This is not so much about space, but evolution. Beginnings. A deep movie. 🙂
Even though it’s a classic, I’ve never seen that movie in its entirety. One of the these days! Have a great Wednesday, Sandee!
It’s a most deep movie and hard to understand. I love this movie. 🙂
Thank you for the recommendation, Sandee. I will check it out!
Thank you for sharing the backstory on this very cool movie. The soundtrack was superb! Happy Wednesday!
I love the soundtrack too. It is such a great movie. Happy Wednesday, Eugenia. 🙂
Hugs, my friend. 😊
I am enjoying your movie series on Wednesdays. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day. XO
Next week will be the last for a bit. I’m marching toward fall. Hugs my friend. 🙂
I like that movie too but it has been I while since I have seen it.
Hubby and I watched it recently and enjoyed it just as much if not more. Happy Wordless Wednesday. 🙂
Another one Mom missed.
I’m glad my folks took me to see this when it came out. I loved it. Still love it. 🙂
The special effects in most old movies look pretty bad by today’s standards, but 2001 has held up very well.
It has held up very well. I love this movie. 🙂
I’m gonna say that the book was better than the film, plus there were four books in the series, and 3001: The Final Odyssey is so fantastic, I think everyone should read it!
I’ll get these books and read them all. I love books better than movies. 🙂
I can’t believe it’s that old! It was one of a kind.
I was a senior in high school when this movie came out. I was so fortunate to see it then. Hubby and I rewatched in recently and still love it just as much. 🙂
OMCs do I recall going to that movie…..neither of us were into all the space movies but we felt we needed to see this one. We loved the music but the movie put us to sleep. As did Chariots of Fire…loved the music.
Hugs Cecilia
I was mesmerized by this movie. Very deep and kept me wide awake. Funny how we differ on things. It’s a wonderful thing. Hugs, my friend. 🙂
I do remember going to the movies to see this one. For the times, it was really impressive. I’ve watched it since, and it seems so slow, in that there isn’t much action like the movies these days. But I liked it anyway.
Wishing you a wonderful Wednesday. ♥
I hear you. It sure is a deep movie. Hugs, my friend. 🙂
One of the best movie lines ever: I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that. Always loved that line. Happy mid-week.
I love Hal very much. I loved Dave too. Happy Wordless Wednesday, my friend. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
It was such a deep movie and not something you can watch idily. You need to pay attention. I always had to take it in segments. Thanks goodness for DVRs and streaming. 🙂
I saw the movie long ago and it was definitely different for its time. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again. Alana ramblinwitham
You’ll have a different take on it the second time around. Happy Wordless Wednesday. 🙂
Maybe a nice film, but not my taste ! I don’t like science fiction movies.
This one was very deep. Happy Wordless Wednesday, Gattina. Scritches to Rosie. 🙂
Great info about yet another Iconic moving ~ loved ‘Hal’ ~
Hugs and love to you and your family ~ ^_^
Wishing you good health, laughter and love in your days,

I was an iconic movie. I loved Hal too. Right up until he was disconnected. 🙂
“I’m sorry Dave, I can’t do that.”
Hal the AI
I loved Hal and Dave. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to Pixie. 🙂
A science fiiction classic! Great details on the filming and its scientific accuracy! That I did not know that. I was a bit young to have watched this when it first came out… but I certainly saw it years later. I enjoyed the music in this movie too. Strauss is a favorite of mine. Happy Wednesday Sandee.
I was a senior in high school when I saw this movie. It was very difficult to understand. Took me watching it several times to figure it out. Hugs. 🙂
It is indeed a movie about a complex subject. Thanks for the movie trivia. I enjoy it. Hugs back to you, Sandee.
A true classic movie. Did you that HAL actually was making fun of IBM as the letters of HAL are right before IBM.
Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
I hear you. It was a great movie. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, Patrick. 🙂
2001 is a classic that still holds up today – I’ve seen it many times. It does, however, leave me a little melancholy that even all these years after 2001 we don’t have the technology or routine space travel that they had.
I’ve seen it many times too and it’s a classic. Have a great Wordless Wednesday. 🙂
I don’t think I ever saw this. I really should. I think I’d enjoy it. I have to look for it.
It’s a very deep movie. Hubby and I enjoyed it back then and again recently. 🙂
What a great movie…although it took watching it 3 times and having my sci-fi hubby clarify a few things before I could truly enjoy it!
It’s very deep for sure. It took me several times to kind of know what it meant. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
It’s a classic, for sure. Hugs, my dear.
I love this movie. I’ll watch it many more time. Hugs back, my friend. 🙂
Thanks, for the shoutout, Sandee, and for hosting this awesome get-together.

You’re most welcome, my friend. Hugs. 🙂
I’m not sure I’ve seen it – I think I have but I can’t remember it. Except the music bit….??
It’s a movie most won’t forget once you’ve seen it. We loved this movie. 🙂
I remember seeing it and the movie. I pray you and Mr. Zane have a great rest of the week and please give scritches to the kitties.
We’re having a great week. I hope you are too. Love and hugs, my friend. 🙂
I remember seeing this movie when it first came out. The technology was amazing! Fun fact: HAL, the computer, got his name from IBM. Think about it for a second. 😁
I have thought about that. Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, Debbie. Hugs. 🙂
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it definitely sounds like a must-watch!
Happy Thursday, Sandee!
We loved it. It’s worth the watch. Happy rest of the week, Veronica. 🙂
You had me at Strauss. 🙂
I hear you. Great music. 🙂
Excellent choice! I’m late, it’s Thursday, and as if that isn’t bad enough I added ANPITS to the linky list when I posted another post today. I don’t know how that happened, I just wanted to see your post and leave a comment. I’m sorry, can you delete my link? Anyway, I love your photo!
“Hugs” and love,
You can link up anytime you want. You’re always welcome. 🙂
