Cleopatra – 1963
The famous flick starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton was originally supposed to film in England, but a winter storm destroyed the set, leading to it being rebuilt in Rome. The production team didn’t let it get them down—in fact, they used the opportunity to make it even grander. Johnny DeCuir was told to build the forum three times its size (apparently the real Roman Forum wasn’t impressive enough), and the undertaking was so massive, Italy reportedly almost ran out of building materials.
Where It Was Filmed: Cincecitta Studios in Rome

I’ll skip the next game… ❤️😘
This one was most impressive. Love this movie and love Taylor and Burton. Happy Wordless Wednesday, my friend. Hugs.
I can not recall if I have watched the entire movie. I have seen parts of it. And fantastic memorable scenes they were. I knew it was filmed in Rome but did not realize that the scale was as grand. It is always a delight to learn history and movie trivia. Thank you, Sandee.
Have a wonderful Wordless Wednesday! Cheers.
It was a grand movie and still worth the watch. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Cheers and hugs. 🙂
Yes, I agree. The classics are hard to beat and the acting by the legends is definitely worth a look. Thank you! Cheers and hugs to you too!
That is interesting I remember first seeing that film when I was a kid
Have a forumtastic week Sandee and thanks for hosting and linking up 👍
It was quite the production. Have a great Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. You’re most welcome on both counts, Steve. 🙂
Well isn’t that interesting. It seems to me that I saw that movie but I can’t be sure. Maybe I’ve just heard so much about it that I think I saw it…lol
It’s so worth the watch. A production to remember. Hugs to you and lots of scritches to Gibbs. 🙂
I’ve learned something today, thank you, Sandee!
If you learned something from me then I’ve really outdone myself. Happy Wordless Wednesday, Keith. 🙂
I can remember seeing that movie a long time ago and it was a great one!
It was a great movie indeed. No shortcuts either. Happy Wordless Wednesday. A hug to you and scritches to Dany Duke. 🙂
That was one of the most fascinating movies we’ve ever seen, Sandee, and one of the longest one too😺😺We didn’t know the story behind it, but that was a lot of work to set up the movie too🙈Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day for all of you🐾😽💞
I agree with you. I didn’t know the story behind it either. Most impressive. Double Pawkisses to the kitties and a big hug to Granny. 🙂
Mom never saw that movie, she isn’t a big movie fan, but had no idea it wasn’t filmed in Hollywood. Interesting.
I didn’t know that either. Knowing the back story is a good thing. Happy day and rest of the week. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
I don’t think I’ve ever watched that movie from start to finish. With the interesting facts you just shared, I might just have to.😊
Happy Wednesday, Sandee!
It’s worth the watch. Most impressive movie. Happy Wednesday, my friend. 🙂
It was a fantastic movie and a long one, as well. Happy Wednesday!
Yes on both counts, Eugenia. Happy Wednesday, my friend. 🙂
😊
One of my aunts, who lived a couple of miles from us as I was growing up, took me to see the movie (I was, I think, 10) and I remember it being so intense to me (the colors, and how long it was) that I asked to leave and she took me home. I’ve never seen it since! Alana ramblinwitham
What a fun memory. It’s quite the production indeed. Happy Wordless Wednesday. 🙂
Must have been an impressive structure. I probably saw that movie, but can’t remember. Mostly I remember about Cleopatra from watching all the history mystery kind of TV shows that air all the time. Very interesting lady back in the day.
Wishing you a happy Wednesday! <3
She sure was. Her and Burton was a fiery marriage too. Happy Wednesday, Barbara. Hugs. 🙂
I also had an all-things-Egyptian phase as a teenager. Their history is still not totally uncovered. I had a hard time with Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. Her voice was just a bit too little girly for me. However, she did look beautiful.
Me too. I’m still fascinated by anything Egyptian. Taylor was so very beautiful. Happy Wednesday. 🙂
A set to match the personalities of so long ago in ancient Rome. Only fitting it should be in Italy!
I agree with you. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week. Scritches to the pups and a hug to mom. 🙂
An epic film, with epic actors and sets.
Yes, yes and yes. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to Da Boyz. 🙂
That was some amazing production and an amazing set too!
It sure was. I loved this movie. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
Mama loved the movie and mama dressed up all the time when little as Cleo herself! Mama also said once to her best friend who did NOT want to be Cleopatra, “Okay, I’ll be Cleopatra and you can be the maid.” They never forgot that one!!!! But did laugh over it as mama blushed….
I wanted to be Cleopatra. Not the maid. You made me laugh out loud. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to Loulou. 🙂
I have never seen this film, but I enjoyed reading these facts about it. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day. XO
It’s worth watching. It’s most impressive. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Big hug to you and scritches to all the kitties. 🙂
Mom just watched a documentary about Elizabeth Taylor. It went into a lot about the movie too.
That movie was a classic for her and Burton. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
Interesting info. I never saw this movie, but now I want to. Have a great day and rest of the week.
It’s a great movie and worth the watch. You have a great day and rest of the week, too. 🙂
Such a remarkable recreation for a spectacular film. Love those kinds of big budget films!

It was a fantastic set had no idea about the original set in England. it was meant to be in Rome
Hugs Cecilia
I didn’t know any of the background. It was a great movie. Hugs for a happy Wordless Wednesday, my friend. 🙂
Classic movie. Watching it today it looks like a play. There were so few camera angles and true close-ups back in the day. The sets were magnificent and the costumes were stunning, spotless, and perfectly clean.
It was a beautiful film. I’m going to watch it again. Have a great day and rest of the week, my friend. Thank you for being such a loyal participant in my memes. 🙂
Great info about an iconic movie ~ thanks,

There is a new documentary on MAX about Elizabeth Taylor and she talks about the shooting of this scene.
I need to see this. Thanks. 🙂
I never knew that a winter storm led to such a grand rebuild of the set for Cleopatra.
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were unforgettable in their roles.
Thanks for sharing this interesting tidbit, Sandee!
