The Shining’s Overlook Hotel
Stephen King published his third novel, The Shining, in 1977 and the book quickly became the iconic horror author’s first bestseller. Adapted for the screen by director Stanley Kubrick in 1980, The Shining has since become one of King’s most widely known and applauded literary works.
Following Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and their son Danny to the grand, but remote Overlook Hotel during a harsh Colorado winter, The Shining explores both psychological and physical horror. After accepting the job of caretaker at the Overlook, Jack, a troubled writer and recovering alcoholic, begins to experience symptoms of cabin fever while Danny sees a number of ghosts throughout the grounds of the hotel. As tensions tighten amongst the small family, Jack’s anger issues and drinking problem making him increasingly irritable, the weather worsens and the Torrances become trapped in their own isolated nightmare.

It was a great movie that I’ve watched more than once. 🙂
Incredible place and hotel. And the background is fabulous!
Thank you for sharing this discovery. And thank you for your Blog Hop!
Happy WW dear Sandee! Hugs! All the best!❤️😘
I would love to visit this hotel and I’d stay the weekend too. Such a great movie. 🙂
It looks incredible, but I’d be a a bit nervous about staying there!
I’d be okay as long as I didn’t see the twin girls in the hallway. Just saying. 🙂
What a beautiful setting but I’ll pass on staying there!
It’s a most beautiful place. I’d love to see it in person. Scritches to Dandy Duke. 🙂
I haven’t seen the movie. I have heard of it though and know the main idea of it. I’m too chicken to read scary things and I definitely would not want to stay there. 😉
This movie is mind bending, but I loved it so. I didn’t read the book and I think it has a bit of a different ending. A great thriller. 🙂
Looks amazing but I am with Keith I would be scared staying there too hahah!
Have a horrorlesstastic week Sandee and thanks for hosting 👍
I’d stay. It was just a book and movie. Beautiful hotel. 🙂
We don’t like scary stories, but that hotel looks like it could make a good place for scary scenes.
I love this movie. It’s mind bending. Isolation is what comes to mind. 🙂
I read Kings first two books but never finished The Shining and only watched the first half of the movie before turning it off. that is an awesome place in the photo. I like scary stories but this one I could not read. King became to much for me and I only read 2 more.
I did okay with his books/movies until Pet Cemetery and that was it for me. I hear you. 🙂
Having seen The Shining, I don’t think we’ll be staying at that hotel anytime soon. It is cool looking, though!
I would stay. Not sure if I’d make it through the night, but I’d give it a go. 🙂
Mom remembers that movie. We’ll pass on staying there.
I’d love to see the hotel and explore all the beauty. 🙂
What an amazing hotel and backstory, Sandee! Happy Wednesday!
It’s a beautiful place and perfect for that book/movie. Happy Wednesday, Eugenia. 🙂
It is absolutely gorgeous, Sandee!
Read it, watched it, a thing of nightmares! Happy Wednesday!
It is that. It did have a happy ending though. 🙂
It really is grand, and also creepy. Some might stay there because they love horror. I’ll pass. Alana ramblinwitham
I can handle some horror and not others. I loved this movie and have seen it more than once. 🙂
That’s a distinctive looking hotel.
I think it’s a most gorgeous place. I’d love to explore the hotel and area. 🙂
Beautiful hotel, looks a lot like The Grand Floridian in Florida. Thanks for hosting. Have a nice day. XO
I love this hotel. It’s beautiful. Have a great day and rest of the week, Ellen. Scritches to the kitties. 🙂
I’m not sure I’d want to stay there either LOL!
I’d love to see this hotel though. Perhaps during the day? 🙂
Here’s Johnny!!!
It’s a pretty classy looking place. I’ve never actually watched that movie. I’ll add it to my list
Here’s Johnny indeed. He went off the rails in a big way. 🙂
Definitley a beautiful photo…Mountains are just amazing
The Shining was one of those movies one never forgets.
I always wondered how long Jack practiced that faciall expression for “I’m Back”!!
Hugs Cecilia
I wonder how long he practiced that look either. He’s a great actor. Hugs, my friend. 🙂
One of my favorite books and movies! I’d love to go there and look for the ghosts!
Wishing you a wonderful Wednesday! ♥
I’ll come with you. I would love to see this hotel in person. Have a wonderful Wednesday and rest of the week, Barbara. 🙂
A co-worker visited this hotel last year; said it was a lot of fun to tour.
Me…nope!
A tour? I’d love to go on the tour. How fun. 🙂
The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park is a fabulous place-too bad it’s associated with a chiller of a book and movie. Happy mid-week. 🐫
I’m sure it’s created a lot of money for the hotel. Happy mid-week, my friend. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
One of my favorite Stephen King horror books…and a beautiful, yet spooky, building!
I loved the movie. I didn’t read the book though. Different endings I’m told. 🙂
I was all set to spend the night in this magnificent structure, then I read the back story. Guess I’ll be sleeping at Holiday Inn Express.
I’d love to stay there. It sure is a beautiful hotel. Happy Wordless Wednesday, my friend. 🙂
Not sure how true it is but years ago I heard that King dreams a lot about what he writes about. To me, that would be scary if I was dreaming that stuff but thinking of him, its just as scary cause I worry about that mind of his!
He does have a twisted mind and it’s gotten worse as the years have passes. This one was pretty mind compared to his later books/movies. 🙂
A terrible book 😨 as are most of King’s demonic visions. Read them carefully and with prayers for spiritual discernment and protection!
❤️&🙏, c.a.
I loved The Shining. It was a most entertaining movie. 🙂
Wow! Such an iconic image. Don’t know if I’d want to stay there, though. The lore is too hard to ignore.
Being his first work he hadn’t gone off the rails as he has later in his career. 🙂
The movie was amazing and that hotel looks so beautiful but scary. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
I loved the movie so much I’ve watched it more than once. A classic. You have a wonderful week, too, Patrick. 🙂
That looks like an amazing hotel. I’m not sure I’d want to stay in a King novel, but it’s beautiful. Happy Wednesday!
It’s make believe so I’d stay there. If I saw the twins in the hallway then I’d be out of there. 🙂
I can’t remember if I ever read the book but I definitely saw the movie.
It does look like a pretty amazing hotel.
It sure was a great movie and the hotel is beautiful. 🙂
Great photo ~ and one of the few King books I have ~ thanks,
Lots of hugs and love to you and your family from me and Ziggy,
Wishing you good health, laughter and love in your days,
A ShutterBug Explores,
aka (A Creative Harbor)
I didn’t read the book, but did see the movie. It was a great movie. Love and hugs to you and Ziggy. 🙂
Mom used to love reading Stephen King books, but age has made her a wee bit more easily scared. We don’t think she would ever want to stay in that massive hotel.
Woos – Misty and Timber
Perhaps age, but King has gotten weirder and weirder over the years. It might be that. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
It’s certainly an imposing looking place.
I’ve never been into horror.
I loved this movie. I’m not a huge fan of horror, but this wasn’t so much horror than it was booze and isolation. Hugs. 🙂
That hotel looks absolutely stunning!
However, I’m not sure I’d have the courage to stay there, especially after watching The Shining.
The movie left quite an impression on me!
Happy Thursday, Sandee!
It left a huge impression on me, too. I love that movie. 🙂
Though dad loves the movie, he and mom feel that the book was much better. Dad also says that he’d love to find a position like that (without the personal issues, of course).
I didn’t read the book, but I hear it had a different ending. I think books are always better than the movies. 🙂
Great movie and the location they picked was perfect! 😀 That hotel looks suitably creepy.
It does, but I’d love to go there. I loved that movie. 🙂
What a movie, and what a writer! Happy Caturday Sandee, we hope your weekend is furbulous!
I loved this movie. I think he’s crazy now, but he was very entertaining back then. Happy weekend. 🙂
Oh, wow; I just mentioned that film on https://brianshomeblog.com/2024/05/a-looking-over-the-overlook-selfie-with-kiki.html. lol It’s a favorite of ours, though Stephen King didn’t care for this take. He preferred the very different TV version. Be well, my dear.
The Shining is a favorite movie of mine. Be well, too, my friend. 🙂
Loved watching the film, Sandee dearest.
Thanks for sharing the synopsis and a picture of the hotel.
What a riveting tale this was. And always a classic at that.
Have a wonderful week, ahead. Will link up with my post for this week.
Big hugs and kisses my precious friend.
I so loved this movie. I’ve seen it more than once. Love and hugs, Sweet Natasha. 🙂
