Thankful Thursday

It’s Thankful Thursday hosted by Brian of Brian’s Home. He wants us to post what we’re thankful for.

I think it’s a good thing to do each week. Focus on the positive things in our lives.

I’m thankful that I was the only child that wanted to learn how to make my mothers Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. She was ever so patient and taught me how to make each dish. I didn’t realize how doing this would mean so much later in my life.

When I was forty my mother went to heaven after battling ALS for almost five years. She was a young 60 years old. My entire family depended on me to make Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners soon after she got sick. I remember the last year she fixed Thanksgiving and Christmas. We all helped her, but let her do her famous and delicious dinner. She knew it was her last year and so did we.

Hubby and I did this for many years. I’m thankful that even though I was so young I wanted to know how to make my mothers wonderful dinner. My family often said they couldn’t tell the difference between moms dinner and mine. Always made me smile.

What are you thankful for today?

Yes! My grandma was the one who made the big meals and she made everything from scratch too. The holidays were wonderful. One dish that she often made for Sunday dinner was homemade beef and noodles. Every woman in the family (and my oldest son) tried to replicate it, but no one ever quite got it down as tasty as she had it. She loved that everyone loved it. For me, I most loved seeing her let my kids get in there and help knead the dough, roll the noodles, cut them to let them dry, etc. She was a most excellent grandmother and great grandmother too. 🙂

I love your memory of your mom’s last time making Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. It’s a wonderful cherished memory that you get to hold. Have a wonderful day!

Oh what a wonderful memory. There are so many if we just transport ourselves back to your younger years. You have a wonderful day too, my friend. 🙂

That is so wonderful! You have some great memories from your mom and you can keep her alive through those meals. Our mom has always loved to cook and bake and learned a lot from Gramma too. Now she makes the holiday meals because Gramma isn’t up to doing it all anymore. Gramma often says she is glad Mom learned to cook.

the person now reading this is the person who goes online and orders KFC and picks it up and sits it out for Christmas dinner or TG dinner. Until Mother got sick, I always purchased everything and she cooked it all and I cleaned up the mess. we were both happy. to this day I have never cooked a turkey, but did try cooking that turkey breast for this thanksgiving and boy was it awful.. I did learn to cook from mother because I had to help her, but only basics, you know, eggs and bacon, roast and taters and carrots. It is good to rememer your mothers cooking and now i am remembering my mothers cooking. pies and cakes and nana pudding oh my

What lovely memories, Sandee! I was 23 when I lost my mom at 54 years old. I don’t think my cooking skills match hers but I can put a good meal together. Happy Thursday!

It meant so very much. Everyone looked forward to our holiday meals. We had meals throughout the year too. Lots of BBQs and such, but the holiday meals were their favorites. 🙂

As a Sophomore in college my mother walked me through cooking the Thanksgiving dinner over the phone as I was in Oregon and my Mom was in California- she was a great Mom and passed away too soon from side affects of chemo at the young age of 65.

What wonderful memories. One of my favorite Christmas memories that always makes me laugh is the year the Christmas tree fell down while we were eating dinner.🙀

Those special celebrations are the anchor and glue that binds our families together. Bless you for being that solid foundation for the family carrying on the tradition your mum started. I’m sure they very much appreciated it.

    • Sandee says:

They did appreciate it and mom knew that I would carry on. We talked about it after her last year of preparing the holiday meals. Scritches to the pups and a smooch to Norman. 🙂

  13. Lisa says:

Family recipes are wonderful things to pass to future generations! They seem to keep us close to the person even when they are no longer with us. I’m sure your Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are extra special because of this tradition. ❤️🎄

Hello, hello I’ve just got to tell you… guess where I was today….. can’t guess, right? Well, I went Christmas shopping. Hubby drove me to Walmart, put me in one of those driveable carts and off I went with my list. Hubby saved $200 and gave it to me and said go play Santa and I did! Woo Hoo! I had so much fun. Got a present for all the grandkids & 2 great grands & presents for my kids too and even had money left to by hubby a present too! He apologized for being a boob lately, but he’s been stressed waiting on tests results from some tests. I have so much fun… MERRY CHRISTMAS! You’re the first person I told my sista!!! HUGS and hope you had a great day too! Hugs & hope you had a great day too! ho ho ho

Our Mom learned a lot of special dishes and recipes from her grandmother and mother. She is trying to pass them along to her daughters and granddaughters. It certainly is a wonderful tradition.
