I’m thankful that I was the only child that wanted to learn how to make my mothers Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. She was ever so patient and taught me how to make each dish. I didn’t realize how doing this would mean so much later in my life.
When I was forty my mother went to heaven after battling ALS for almost five years. She was a young 60 years old. My entire family depended on me to make Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners soon after she got sick. I remember the last year she fixed Thanksgiving and Christmas. We all helped her, but let her do her famous and delicious dinner. She knew it was her last year and so did we.
Hubby and I did this for many years. I’m thankful that even though I was so young I wanted to know how to make my mothers wonderful dinner. My family often said they couldn’t tell the difference between moms dinner and mine. Always made me smile.

Lots of Love,
Talked with my sister today and we talked about this. Love back. 🙂
What wonderful memories. There’s something very comforting about an old recipe that comes from previous generations.
I’m so glad I took the time in my youth to make moms wonderful holiday meals. 🙂
We are always thankful for warm and wonderful family memories ~ today, we’re thankful Ms Sandee and Comedy Plus share fun, laughter and smiles with us each and every week! Ann and June
Oh thank you for this wonderful comment. You made me smile, June and Ann. 🙂
Yes! My grandma was the one who made the big meals and she made everything from scratch too. The holidays were wonderful. One dish that she often made for Sunday dinner was homemade beef and noodles. Every woman in the family (and my oldest son) tried to replicate it, but no one ever quite got it down as tasty as she had it. She loved that everyone loved it. For me, I most loved seeing her let my kids get in there and help knead the dough, roll the noodles, cut them to let them dry, etc. She was a most excellent grandmother and great grandmother too. 🙂
I love your memory of your mom’s last time making Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. It’s a wonderful cherished memory that you get to hold. Have a wonderful day!
Oh what a wonderful memory. There are so many if we just transport ourselves back to your younger years. You have a wonderful day too, my friend. 🙂
That is so wonderful! You have some great memories from your mom and you can keep her alive through those meals. Our mom has always loved to cook and bake and learned a lot from Gramma too. Now she makes the holiday meals because Gramma isn’t up to doing it all anymore. Gramma often says she is glad Mom learned to cook.
Yes indeed. We don’t do them anymore, but we did for years and years. 🙂
Making recipes that our moms made are the most wonderful memories♥
Yes they are Miss Molly. I’m glad mom had the patience to teach me. She taught me well. 🙂
the person now reading this is the person who goes online and orders KFC and picks it up and sits it out for Christmas dinner or TG dinner. Until Mother got sick, I always purchased everything and she cooked it all and I cleaned up the mess. we were both happy. to this day I have never cooked a turkey, but did try cooking that turkey breast for this thanksgiving and boy was it awful.. I did learn to cook from mother because I had to help her, but only basics, you know, eggs and bacon, roast and taters and carrots. It is good to rememer your mothers cooking and now i am remembering my mothers cooking. pies and cakes and nana pudding oh my
Good for you. Whatever works. I love KFC. Haven’t had it in many months, but every now and then we do. 🙂
I am sorry you lost your mom so young. I think it is wonderful you spent the time with her and know how to cook all her dishes. XO
Her almost five years of illness were awful. Have a great day, Ellen. 🙂
What lovely memories, Sandee! I was 23 when I lost my mom at 54 years old. I don’t think my cooking skills match hers but I can put a good meal together. Happy Thursday!
Way to young too. My father came to eat with me for many years after mother passes. He said my fried chicken and potatoes and gravy were better than moms. 🙂
What a wonderful compliment that must have been.
What a beautiful memory.

I agree with you, Regine. Happy day. 🙂
thank you for sharing that lovely memory. I can imagine how much it meant to your family and I know your mother was looking down on you from above with love. xoxo
It meant so very much. Everyone looked forward to our holiday meals. We had meals throughout the year too. Lots of BBQs and such, but the holiday meals were their favorites. 🙂
Very similar thankful…that I learned how to make Mama’s famous dressing.
What beautiful memories.
Hugs Cecilia
Yes indeed. Moms usually make the very best dishes. 🙂
That’s a wonderful remembrance, Sandee. We’re Thankful that we could read it 😸Pawkisses for a Happy Thursday🐾😽💞
I’m happy about that too. Pawkisses back, Little Binky. My best to your Granny. 🙂
As a Sophomore in college my mother walked me through cooking the Thanksgiving dinner over the phone as I was in Oregon and my Mom was in California- she was a great Mom and passed away too soon from side affects of chemo at the young age of 65.
I was on the phone a lot with my mom too. They both left us to early. Big hug. 🙂
They sure did and I miss her sense of humor and common sense!
Being able to cook well really is a blessing! I enjoy doing it and I know my family does as well 🙂 Have a wonderful day!
Yes, my family always showed up for my meals. You have a wonderful day. 🙂

Yes indeed. I miss her so. We used to talk to each other every single day until she went into the hospital. 🙂
thankful my Christmas shopping is all done, now if it just gets here! Happy Thankful Thursday.
We’re done here too. A great feeling and didn’t use any credit cards so no debt. Happy Thankful Thursday. 🙂
What wonderful memories. One of my favorite Christmas memories that always makes me laugh is the year the Christmas tree fell down while we were eating dinner.🙀
Oh that would be exciting. How fun. Even funnier now. 🙂
Those special celebrations are the anchor and glue that binds our families together. Bless you for being that solid foundation for the family carrying on the tradition your mum started. I’m sure they very much appreciated it.
They did appreciate it and mom knew that I would carry on. We talked about it after her last year of preparing the holiday meals. Scritches to the pups and a smooch to Norman. 🙂
I hope your mom didn’t look like Lou Gehrig.
No she didn’t. It’s an awful disease. I love you Kismet. 🙂
Truly touching. Before my mom passed I had her recipes down also. So a part of mom will always live in me.
That’s the ticket for sure. Have a fabulous day, my friend. 🙂
Family recipes are wonderful things to pass to future generations! They seem to keep us close to the person even when they are no longer with us. I’m sure your Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are extra special because of this tradition. ❤️🎄
Yes they are. Each year I prepared her recipes made me smile. 🙂
That’s wonderful that you learned your mom’s recipes and ways to make a special dinner for your family. Good memories to treasure, too.
Wishing you a lovely day! <3
When my dad got sick and went into a home he was always brought the meals on the holiday. He was very grateful. 🙂
The holiday season is bittersweet, isn’t it?
Joyful memories, and reminders of those who aren’t there.
Hugs and purrs.
It is and I remember my mother often, but especially during the holidays. She’s been gone for 30 years. I still miss her so. 🙂
Such a sweet memory. It’s so nice to be able to use old family recipes. I don’t really cook much, but I do think it’s a nice thing for a family to have.
We cook most of the time. Rarely go out anymore. Less calories that way. 🙂
What a beautiful story!
Thank you. It’s a wonderful memory for me and many more memories I have from doing these holiday meals. Wonderful times with my family. 🙂
What a touching thankful. There are too many things I did not have the good sense to learn from my family when I was young, and I regret it.
I was so young, but I wanted to make moms holiday meals just like she did. Little did I know she’s leave us so soon. 🙂
No, we always think our parents will be around forever. 🙁
What a blessing from your mother. Have you taught or at least written down how to do it for the younger ones in your family?
My family knows how to make moms holiday meals. 🙂
I am sorry you lost your mom. That is a lovely memory.
Me too. She left us way to early. 🙂
Hello, hello I’ve just got to tell you… guess where I was today….. can’t guess, right? Well, I went Christmas shopping. Hubby drove me to Walmart, put me in one of those driveable carts and off I went with my list. Hubby saved $200 and gave it to me and said go play Santa and I did! Woo Hoo! I had so much fun. Got a present for all the grandkids & 2 great grands & presents for my kids too and even had money left to by hubby a present too! He apologized for being a boob lately, but he’s been stressed waiting on tests results from some tests. I have so much fun… MERRY CHRISTMAS! You’re the first person I told my sista!!! HUGS and hope you had a great day too! Hugs & hope you had a great day too! ho ho ho
I’m glad you had such fun at WalMart. I’m sure that made your heart happy. Love you, Marie. 🙂
Our Mom learned a lot of special dishes and recipes from her grandmother and mother. She is trying to pass them along to her daughters and granddaughters. It certainly is a wonderful tradition.

It is indeed. I’m so happy that I wanted to know how to fix moms holiday meals. Scritches to the pups. 🙂
Memories… Thanks for sharing, Sandee! I’m thankful for special times with my mom and grandma… They were both wonderful cooks/bakers and taught me many life lessons at tje stove, table and beyond! Missing them both, I am so grateful for them!
I hear you, Bette. Such special people moms and grandmothers are. I miss them too. 🙂
I’m sorry you lost your mother at such a young age and from such an awful condition. ~hugs~ Blessings to your and yours, my dear.
It was pretty awful. She was such a wonderful mother. Blessing to you and yours, Darla. 🙂
