Yule Goats

This unusual tradition at least has a lengthy history. Its origins begin in the 11th century, with a mentioning of a ‘man-sized’ goat figure that accompanied Saint Nicholas. Now, it’s got a lot bigger. Cities across Sweden construct ‘Yule Goats’ at the beginning of advent every year, with the most famous being in Gävle, a staw structure that often reaches a whopping 40 feet. Unfortunately, it does attract people who want to turn it into a giant bonfire, and the display has been sadly destroyed around 36 times since 1966. Source: Wanderlust Magazine

I love tradition but that Yule Goat has always seemed pretty scary to me……they CAN get out of control and that would certainly ruin a LOT of holidays!! Lots of work to put that together then it’s gone in a minute!

    Hugs, Pam

I am grateful again for something new for me. And it’s so sad that some crazy people destroy
what others built. Sometimes I am thinking that they do this because they are very dry in their soul…
Happy WW, dear Sandee! Hugs, joy and love!❤️😘

Swedesburg, IA, a tiny town of 99 people, has a big Yule Goat on the side of the highway when you pass through. We have stopped and done photos there before. Thankfully we have not heard that anyone destroys it. They do make a new one every so often. The museum also has a big Dala Horse out front https://mygbgvlife.com/2019/05/31/swedesburg-iowa/

We humans both create and destroy – why destroy something a town worked hard to build? Interesting tradition, the Yule Goat and sad that destroying one seems to have become a tradition, also. Alana ramblinwitham

I have heard of the Yule Goat, but it is a pity that people have to spoil things by setting fire to it. They also have a mythical Yule goat in Finland, but I don’t think they make a straw effigy of it. In Iceland they have a Yule cat who eats people who haven’t got new clothes, and naughty children. I think I will stick to Santa Claus! I have a friend who lives in Finland and she tells me of these monsters!

This is interesting to know about a Christmas goat! It does look like it would make a good bonfire. It would be a fun thing if the cities would make it a supervised tradition to set it on fire, then maybe it would not be randomly destroyed. 🙂
