Here are 5 fascinating facts about the Mona Lisa that will leave you wanting to know more, or even see it for yourself.

  • The Mona Lisa painting is only 30 inches tall. When visitors travel afar to see the Mona Lisa, quite often they are expecting a largely epic painting but the painting is only 30 x 20 Inches (77 x 53 centimeters).
  • Did you know that “Mona Lisa” is not her real name? It is thought that the lady displayed in the painting was Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a wealthy Italian man named Francesco del Giocondo.
  • The Mona Lisa has only been stolen once. On August 21, 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen from its permanent resting place in Le Louvre, Paris, France.
  • Mona Lisa has her own mailing box. Although she is no longer alive and hasn’t been for many years, she still receives love-notes, poems and flowers.
  • Mona Lisa stole the hearts of many men, even after her death! Source: The Fact Site

Super interesting post – we’ve seen her in person on a trip long ago through Europe. We were lucky that day as I recall – had her all to ourselves as nobody was crowded around her in the museum. There’s a lot to “read” in her eyes! Happy Wordless Wednesday.

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy

Mom saw her at the Louvre, in Paris years ago. She was disappointed. I guess it is not her kind of art. There are way too many prettier, more interesting paintings to look at is her feeling.

  8. Betty – Hello, I am Betty, the author of this blog, and this is my husband, Dan. I retired on 6/30/2018, and Dan retired about a year later, on 5/31/2019. Now that we are both retired, we plan to travel most often in our 23FBKS Micro Lite travel trailer. We also hope to travel other ways occasionally, such as taking a cruise, a roadtrip, perhaps a tour someday. In addition to travel, we like to walk, ride bikes, read, and play Scrabble. I love to write. This blog chronicles our travels in retirement. My purpose in writing this blog is: 1) to offer insight for those who may be making similar trips/adventures in the future 2) to share our adventures with family and friends who care to read and 3) to capture the memories for us. I hope you enjoy reading my blog. I hope it is uplifting, gives you a few smiles and maybe an idea or two. Comments are very much appreciated, and I will respond to all. Thank you for reading, and Happy Travels!

I’m so glad you got in! And in time for Thursday, too.

Your poem is just right, I’d have bought it, too. Just the intrigue and the fun of it is enough. I’m glad I wrote my poem already before reading yours, I have to or I’m too busy thinking of what others write. My poem will be up tomorrow in the usual place.

Oops! My computer erased my comment on Teddy’s poem and when I tried to rewrite it, it ended up posting on the wrong comment feed, sorry! You’re welcome to delete that comment and this one, I copied it to theirs.

  19. messymimi's meanderings – In south Louisiana\'s beautiful swamps.
    messymimi's meanderings says:

It’s one amazing painting, and I’ve read the story of how it was stolen. They think the man who masterminded it got a forger to paint several copies, and after he paid a worker in the Louvre to steal it and hide it in his apartment, the mastermind contacted several wealthy people and “sold them the original which I had stolen so I could offer it to you.” Then, once it was found and returned, of course none of those people who were scammed dared complain, knowing buying stolen goods was illegal. If it really happened that way, it was brilliant.

Growing up, we had a “Mona Lisa” hanging in the living room– of course it was just a reproduction, but it always felt like she was watching over us with that mysterious smile.
Reading these fun facts brings back those memories and makes me appreciate her even more. 😊🎨

  21. Al Penwasser says:

During a USO-sponsored visit to Paris (which was awesome) while our ship was anchored in Marseilles, one of our destinations on the day we were set to return was the Louvre. What ensued was a madcap dash through the museum to see the Mona Lisa. I wrote a story about it (called “Plastic Dead Guys”) which I may post. Anyway, we finally found the painting, but I was amazed at how small it was!
