The Hindenburg
The Hindenburg disaster was an airship accident that occurred on May 6, 1937, in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States. The LZ 129 Hindenburg (Luftschiff Zeppelin #129; Registration: D-LZ 129) was a German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume. Filled with hydrogen, it caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The accident caused 35 fatalities (13 passengers and 22 crewmen) among the 97 people on board (36 passengers and 61 crewmen), and an additional fatality on the ground. Source: Wikipedia

I remember learning about this years ago in school. I think I had forgotten about most of it though. What a very tragic event.

A very sad bit of history – seeing the video has always stuck in my mind as one of the scariest things I’ve seen.

What a tragic incident. A long ago, I rode in a blimp, and the view was stunning. Our ride was cut short, because of a storm. Whew! Happy Wednesday.

Just the picture spoke volumes about what happened. Of course I knew about it, but never saw a picture.

Blimps have always seemed like one of the most unlikely inventions. I guess we won’t see many more of them, with drones being used to catch the aerial views. Is there still a blimp sightseeing tour in San Francisco? The nature and time frame of this tragedy seem to make it a historic event. In the grand scheme of air travel, 35 fatalities is a relatively average number, but there were no aircraft capable of carrying 200 passengers and the skies weren’t filled with air traffic.
This is almost like the air travel version of the Titanic. The Hindenburg was the largest airship of it’s day and her transatlantic passengers were generally wealthy upper class citizens. The scheduled event was considered newsworthy, so film crews and radio stations were on site to see the tragedy unfold before them.

I remember seeing tapes of this disater on TV years later, and a radio voice of a man who was covering the event live at the time who cried out “Oh the humanity!” when he saw it burn and go down.

I was too young to have remembered, not in school yet. It’s like kids now only know about nine one one from history. Now I remember exactly the day, saw it on TV and what I was doing. Both horrible events.

A very sad and costly page in human lives in aviation history. Thank you for the details and for commemorating this day in history. It is very strange, but last week I was thinking about the Hindenburg. I am not sure why. I did not know that the date of that ill-fated event was May 6.

I can so easily hear reporter Herbert Morrison’s cry, “Oh, the humanity!” He understandably thought at the time that all aboard had died. It’s amazing how many survived but I wonder how many of them never quite recovered, either physically or mentally. ~shudder~ Hugs and best wishes, my dear.

Wow. It’s funny how we all know of that but there are huge plane crashes we’ve forgotten…I wonder if it’s the shick at the time enshrouding it or the type of vehicle that makes it enduring history? Shocking pic! I didn’t realise there were survivors.

What a terrible tragedy. I remember learning about the Hindenburg as a child as part of the our of the Goodyear Blimp airfield — which was about a quarter mile from our house.
It was horrific. The reporter made it even more horrific. 🙂
