Dial Up Service
As of 2017, 2.1 million people still use AOL’s dial-up service. Mainly, these customers live in rural America, where it can be expensive and unreliable to get high-speed internet. Meanwhile, dial-up is only $20 per month. Source: The Fact Site

AOL was what I started off with. I can’t imagine still using dial up service though. I wouldn’t mind $20 a month though.

When I first heard the news, I couldn’t even believe this was still operating. I used AOL for about a yearback around 2000 but my very first service was CompuServe. Those AOL discs were everywhere, and I wonder how many discs still exist. Alana ramblinwitham

Whenever Mom hears AOL, she hears that sound of the internet connecting. It is shocking how many people still have AOL email addresses.

I used AOL dial up for a few months with my first PC, then stayed with them for several years on a much improved service before changing to BT. We are on the out skirts of a village and have no problem with internet, but a few years ago we were approached by a company who were wheeling out a new network to reach outlying areas. They wanted to erect a pole in our highest field with two small satellite dishes on them. We came to an agreement with them and they did that. They also gave us free internet. Not only that, but they also pay money into our bank account every month!
It was quite funny when I rang BT to cancel their service. The agent asked how much we were paying the new provider and he could see if he could beat it. When I told him they were paying us he just said okay and put the phone down.

Thanks, Sandee. The phrase “dial-up” alone brought back memories of the dial-up modems that I used to wait for its tone to get online… so fun… the start of the Internet. Seems so long ago.

I also used AOL messenger until they discontinued it.

That dial-up sound was the best, and my notification for my little sister’s texts to me are “You’ve got mail.” : ) I loved that if you continued to call someone, it would boot them offline. Daughter-in-Law works with a company which is connected to getting internet to rural areas. She says some are still too far out and won’t be getting service any time soon. I wonder what they’ll do with no dial up.
