Uncle Sam
Samuel Wilson was one of the men responsible for inspecting and delivering meat packages to U.S. troops during the War of 1812.
All packages he inspected were stamped with the nation’s initials, “U.S.”
When Sam was making his delivery rounds, some soldiers jokingly connected the letters and Sam.
They soon started calling him Uncle Sam, a name that later became one of the U.S.’ most iconic characters! Source: The Fact Site

We have never thought about where the Uncle Sam thing came from, but now we know. It is something we would never have guessed.

Just a quick extra. I had my phone consultation yesterday with CT results. No change so the pills are working at keeping the cancer dormant. I am good to go for another 3 months!

Cool facts website (it’s a great read), but I think there are several origin stories for Uncle Sam. One involves Troy, New York. For several years, we visited Vermont once a year, and had to go through Troy, New York. At the entrance to Troy there was a sign proclaiming “Home of Uncle Sam”. I didn’t know he was a real person but I remember my brothers had a big poster of this in their room. I wonder if that’s what he really looked like.

Thanks for the awesome origin story. My dad likes to look up the stories behind some things when he gets the chance. He says he couls easily spend hours and hours researching the background of stuff.
