The average person spends a little over 76,500 hours on their smartphones over the course of their lifetime—which works out to 8.74 years of their life. This stat computes the average age of acquiring a phone—now just over ten years old—with 3.07 hours of average daily use.

Millennials spend the most time on their phones, clocking an average of 3.7 daily hours. However, average daily screen time decreases as the age of users increases, with Gen Xers reporting 3 hours of daily phone use and Boomers spending just 2.5 hours per day staring at their screens.  For perspective, this works out to around 56 days each year for millennials, compared to 39 days per year for Boomers. I’m a boomer and I’m not on the phone very much. The computer yes, the phone no. 🙂

Neither my husband nor myself have cell phones……life is beautifully uncomplicated this way. I am sure if we had more family or medical reasons to be “reachable” we would carry them but we aren’t and we don’t and it’s just nice to be the only people in a restaurant who are having a conversation with each other instead of staring at or typing on a cell phone. LOL

    Love, Pam

Nothing wrong with not having a cell phone. I’m not a fan of them and most of the time I ignore the phone. The sound is off 90% of the time. Love to you and lots of scritches to Teddy. 🙂

    Duke says:

Thankfully, this info doesn’t apply to my mom. She takes her cell phone with her when she leaves the house for safety reasons and that pretty much sums it up.

That’s pretty much me too. I’m not a fan of the cell phone. Happy Wordless Wednesday. A hug to you and lots of scritches to Duke. 🙂

I sat waiting on hubby to get his lab blood drawn and there were maybe 20 people in the lobby, there were 3 of us without a cell in hand.. I love my smartphone and my report each week on it says I spend 3 hours a week on it.. I don’t talk on it, and now that Jackie died, only get 1 or 2 texts a day. the hours are asking it questions during movies, like how old is so and so. I leave it in the car on the rare occasion we eat out.

I’m not on mine very much either. I don’t want a phone when I’m dining. That’s just rude in my opinion. I miss calls often. Oh well. Happy Wordless Wednesday. Scritches to handsome Beau. 🙂

That is sad. Mom hates her phone and uses it mainly for quick photos or real phone calls. Texting is the absolute worst and she tries to avoid it whenever possible.

Thank Cat Granny is a Boomer and she always says to Grandpaw that she wants the ‘old school’ phone back and wants only a handy so she can reach someone in case of an emergency, and vice versa, when she’s going out. All her Grandchildren are millennials, they hardly talk anymore, they only WApp and we see a lot of Boomers+the next Generation, also took place in that hype of almost no-return…sigh….The good news is, that our grandchildren aren’t using their phone hardly anymore, when we’re around. That’s hopeful, isn’t it, Sandee😸Double Pawkisses for a Happy Wednesday and Week ahead, to you, Zane and the kitties too. Enjoy!🐾😽💞

We don’t have a home phone, but we both have cell phones. We’re not much for being on them though. We use them when we’re apart so we can stay in touch. That’s about it. Double Pawkisses to you both and a huge hug to Granny. 🙂

It’s sad. Young people today are losing the art of actual conversation, the joy of phyical interaction. Mine is useful for some things, and it has a reasonable camera. However, I’m not one for unsocial media. Look up kids, you don’t know what you’re missing!

    • Sandee – California – Home of Awww Mondays, Happy Tuesday, and Wordless Wednesday.
      Sandee says:

I agree with you. The thing I hate the most is going out to eat and seeing people on the phones when they are eating. So disrespectful. Happy Wordless Wednesday, Keith. 🙂

    DrillerAA says:

I am not surprised by the numbers. Millennials have been staring at a screen since they were infants and their parents handed them the phone to keep them quiet. Gen-X have created most of the apps we use in order to create the “paperless office” and or the cashless society. Boomers are pretty adventurous and will try new things just to keep from missing out. Just sayin’. I am on my phone more than necessary but I prefer a large screen, so my desktop computer with a 27″ monitor is still my favorite device.

    • Sandee – California – Home of Awww Mondays, Happy Tuesday, and Wordless Wednesday.
      Sandee says:

They do that, but AT&T isn’t cheap. We depend on the cell phones when we’re in different places. Happy Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, my friend. Love and hugs. 🙂

OH are you so very right…I did a bit of research. My iPhone is a 13 does what I need it to do
takes good photos. From what I saw on line 13 will continue to receive updates at least thru 2026 and maybe into 2027. As long as it receives updates it is fine. I only use it for our main phone and for texting and taking photos. My email is only on desktop or iPad. So no new phone is needed thank goodness

    • Sandee – California – Home of Awww Mondays, Happy Tuesday, and Wordless Wednesday.

  16. CAAC says:

I’m like you Sandee, I’m on my computer more than my phone. Even when we’re away from home, I primarily use my phone for calls, who would’ve guess, navigation, finding businesses, or using my camera. I don’t do any social media stuff at all. I may occasionally check my email if we’re on gone from the house for a few days. Smartphones are quite handy but I certainly don’t want to spend all of my time looking at a small mobile device.

As a teacher, I see this being true. The kids use their phones like a lifeline. I have to phsyically stop a lesson and say, “everyone close your laptop lids and put your phones away” before I can continue teaching sometimes. And still there will be one student who won’t…and then you have to stop class or keep going and let them be (I usually do that latter because talking to them one-on-one after class works better than a classroom confrontation).

    • Sandee – California – Home of Awww Mondays, Happy Tuesday, and Wordless Wednesday.

I hear you about the phones. It’s almost as if they can’t survive without their phones. Kind of sad. 🙂

  20. Smudge says:

Interesting stats, for sure. Mom uses hers as little as possible, whereas dad relies on his mostly for work (and to catch up on news, to be honest). Dad’s always making fun of mom because she often either ignores hers, doesn’t have the volume up, or just plain doesn’t hear it. He says one of these days he’s gonna be trying to get hold of her because he got hurt at work (he works alone and is often outside with power tools, ladders, etc.) or in an accident or something and she won’t answer. He’s constantly texting with the bosses, vendors & contractors and his kids since texting is the easiest way for him.
