Cat Litter

Of course, no list of cat facts would be complete without a kitty litter fact. File this one under practical cat facts! Cat litter was originally mostly sand that was bagged and sold by pet stores until 1947 when Edward Lowe introduced his clay-based Kitty Litter. At first, Lowe had trouble convincing his local pet store to sell the product.

Lowe took a gamble and gave his cat litter away for free until people were willing to pay for it. Lowe’s gamble paid off, and Kitty Litter became such a household name that the trademark became generalized to refer to all cat litter. Lowe continued in the cat litter business and founded the company behind the Tidy Cat brand of cat litter.

Gave away for free until people would pay for it. I guess that paid off in the end, big time. Now we have fancy cat litters that wouldn’t have been dreamed of back then. Alana ramblinwitham

It certainly paid off by giving it away in the beginning. Ivor always keeps a bag of clay litter in the tractor garage/workshop for absorbing any spills.

We’ve tried many litters through the years – currently using the lightweight stuff since we have trouble hauling around heavy bags anymore…..Ted doesn’t care WHAT litter we use thankfully and actually still prefers “doing business” outside like a dog!!

    Hugs, Pam

Just makes me wonder if the word “litter” was originally used as a term for where cats do their business, or from things thrown on the ground outside, as in, “don’t litter.”

Thanks for the back story on kitty litter. Sometimes it is used here to help with traction on the ice, but it can get a bit messy. Maybe Mr. Lowe should also have made a doggy litter for puppies.

  21. Wing Commander Basil & The B Team – UK – Well, now there's a question! Furstly and most importantly I'm a cat if mew hadn't already guessed. I got my Wing Commander status in September 2018 but that hasn't slowed me up at all! I tweet, Instacat, FB, Tumble & Pin too and now there's Basil TV on YouTube. All in all I'm a thoroughly Modern Cat; a cat of the 21st century, mew might say. My human & Purrsonal Assistant aka P.A. is Cathrine Garnell, and she writes books including a tale about my fictional alter ego, Basil the Bionic Cat. [See Books Page] I live in a multi-cat household, and mew can meet the rest of The B Team here most days of the week, as they all like a turn on the blog. I like mice, but then don't we all? I also like fresh tuna, chicken and prawns. I LOVE catnip, not in any excess I might add before mew jump to any wild conclusions. Thanks so much for dropping by, as we The B Team, love making new furriends, so do leave us a comment and say hi.
