Wordless Wednesday

WW is a simple blog post featuring a photo which conveys a message that speaks for itself without using words.

For all the rule breakers, of which I am one, please feel free to add all the words you want.

Make sure you leave a link to your post and I’ll visit your Wordless Wednesday post.

Roller coasters were invented to distract Americans from sin!

In the 1880s, hosiery businessman LaMarcus Thompson hated that Americans were tempted by hedonistic places like saloons and brothels. So he set out to straighten up one of the most immoral places he could think of: Coney Island in New York. There, he built America’s first roller coaster to give New Yorkers some good, clean fun—away from seedier pastimes.

My favorite roller coaster was the Giant Dipper in San Diego, CA.  Giant Dipper is a wooden roller coaster located at Belmont Park in the Mission Bay area of San Diego, California, USA. The ride was designed by Frank Prior and Frederick Church. Giant Dipper is considered a coaster landmark; having been first opened in 1925. Source: Coasterpedia

We had no idea that roller coasters existed for such a long time, Sandee. This one looks horrible. Granny only made a ride in one when she was about 10 years old. Although it was exciting, she never did it again and will🙈 Double Pawkisses for a Happy Wednesday and week ahead to you, Zane and the kitties too🐾😽💞

I’ll pass too. I loved riding them in my youth. My favorite was a wood one in San Diego. You could feel it swaying. Grand fun. 🙂

That roller coaster makes my tummy go flip flop just looking at it – being ON it would be “life-changing” !! EEEK!

I never realised the reason for building them. I could never go on one like that, although I would go on the less scary ones when I was younger.

Mom and I drove by the local amusement park and she mentioned that she loves roller coasters but hasn’t been on one in years. They are not for everyone I guess. We never heard that they were created to keep people from doing bad things. Interesting train of thought.

oh wow! I have always loved a good ride on one of those things, and I have been on some that today I might not get on….I am thinking I would not get on this one. Last one I was on was in Gatlinburg, called the Alpine Sled and it was wild. First time I rode it was in Nov., sleet coming down and the rails were frozen. I asked about it and was showed that the car connection goes under the rails and hugs it. I figured, hell, why not

That’s some interesting history. We went to Dollywood last month and came close to riding The Eagle but decided against it because we were afraid our eye glasses would fly off our faces. Plus, it was pretty chilly. Maybe another time we go it’ll be warmer and we’ll have eye glass straps. 🙂

I may be too old for Roller coasters now, but I hope not. Many of the most fun days I’ve spent in the last 60 years have taken place in amusement parks and Roller Coasters are a big reason for that. We grew up in a rollercoaster town. Everyone had a season pass to the amusement park and parents would let their kids go over unsupervised (we never got in trouble, and were always home on time). We all practically lived at the park and it had some of the fastest, tallest rollercoasters in the world. It still does, and it’s 1/4 of the price of a Disney ticket.
