Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The structure built by the Ancestral Puebloans is located in Mesa Verde National Park in their former homeland region. The cliff dwelling and park are in Montezuma County, in the southwestern corner of Colorado, in the Southwestern United States.

Tree-ring dating indicates that construction and refurbishing of Cliff Palace was continuous approximately from 1190 CE through 1260 CE, although the major portion of the building was done within a 20-year time span. The Ancestral Puebloans, also known as Anasazi, who constructed this cliff dwelling and the others like it at Mesa Verde were driven to these defensible positions by “increasing competition amidst changing climatic conditions”. Cliff Palace was abandoned by 1300, and while debate remains as to the causes of this, some believe that a series of megadroughts interrupting food production systems is the main cause. Cliff Palace was rediscovered in 1888 by Richard Wetherill and Charlie Mason while they were out looking for stray cattle. Source: Wikipedia

I’ve seen similar before, maybe even this same place, and it’s incredible to think how people achieved this so long ago. The landscape looks incredible. It’s strange to think though that in 1300 there were things like megadroughts or extreme weather, which when we get today is just explained as the result of climate change, even though it’s nothing new. Or maybe I’ve got that completely wrong!

Happy Mid-Week, Sandeeeee! I hope you have a lovely day 🌺🌸🌼 xx

Ohhhhhhh we took a Senior’s trip to Utah and Colorado in 2017. Mesa Verde was on our tour schedule. We had to climb down a rather steep ladder. Ironically hubby and I were only about 4 out of the 30 on the tour that could comfortably use the ladder. Seeing Mesa Verde in person was quite touching.
We had such a wonderful trip to those two beautiful states with so many beautiful national and state parks too. Hugs Cecilia

      Sandee says:

I would have gone down that ladder to see this. How fun that you did get to see this place in person. 🙂

  15. Cecilia Upchurch says:

Oh pooh my first comment went down into a black hole. We took a Senior’s tour of Colorado and Utah in 2017. Mesa Verde was on the tour schedule. The entire trip was amazing so many parks and sights. Mesa Verde was definitely one of the highlights. We had to climb down a ladder to get into the view area. Bryan and I were among a handful of people in the tour could could use the ladder.
    Hugs Cecilia
