Why English is so hard to learn…

1 – The insurance was invalid for the invalid in his hospital bed.
2 – There was a row among the oarsmen about who would row.
3 – They were too close to the door to close it.
4 – The buck does funny things when the does(females) are present.
5 – A seamstress and a sewer fell down into the sewer line.
6 – To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
7 – The wind was too strong to wind the sail around the mast.
8 – Upon seeing the tear in her painting she shed a tear.
9 – I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
10 – How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

It’s amazing how the brain knows what is meant immediately, but not so if you are not a native speaker I’m sure!

We take English for granted, but when you see it in sentences like those it is no wonder that other countries have trouble learning it.

So I still have my dog at the bottom, but really you must admit he is a hoot! It’s freezing cold here and there’s a weather warning of really bad ice on streets. The salt trucks have been up and down our block a few times probably because I live across the street from a park & the other side of the park is a school. Many cars park in the park’s parking lot to pick up their children that’s probably why. Me… I’m staying home all day! I’m no fool! ~hehehe~ You’re probably warm as toast right? Oh well some of us are really lucky… BIG HUGS & HAVE A GREAT DAY… Who luvs ya baby!!!! HUGS

Shoveling snow doesn’t sound like fun at all. I’m glad we don’t have to do that. Happy Tuesday. 🙂

  6. The OP Pack says:

Great examples of the perils of our language. Mom spent some time yesterday working with the twins on their “editing” homework. They have to correct sentences with all kinds of errors, including punctuation, spelling, and those tricky words like to-too-two, principle-principal, wait-weight, and on and on. Maybe someone needs to revise English to make it easier.

It can be very difficult. I did fairly well with English. Now math is another story. 🙂

  7. Wing Commander Basil & The B Team – UK – Well, now there's a question! Furstly and most importantly I'm a cat if mew hadn't already guessed. I got my Wing Commander status in September 2018 but that hasn't slowed me up at all! I tweet, Instacat, FB, Tumble & Pin too and now there's Basil TV on YouTube. All in all I'm a thoroughly Modern Cat; a cat of the 21st century, mew might say. My human & Purrsonal Assistant aka P.A. is Cathrine Garnell, and she writes books including a tale about my fictional alter ego, Basil the Bionic Cat. [See Books Page] I live in a multi-cat household, and mew can meet the rest of The B Team here most days of the week, as they all like a turn on the blog. I like mice, but then don't we all? I also like fresh tuna, chicken and prawns. I LOVE catnip, not in any excess I might add before mew jump to any wild conclusions. Thanks so much for dropping by, as we The B Team, love making new furriends, so do leave us a comment and say hi.
Wing Commander Basil & The B Team says:

That’s a good one too. I’ve got a buddy that does a lot of word play posts. Love them. 🙂

  8. Rosey says:

Ha! It is so hard if you think about it. I have ESOL students and I can’t even imagine how hard it must be for them , especially when their family doesn’t speak English at all.

    • Sandee – California – Home of Awww Mondays, Happy Tuesday, and Wordless Wednesday.
      Sandee says:

Tough for sure. We have a lot of that here too. I guess it’s pretty much everywhere anymore. 🙂

  10. ChirpyDebs – Greece – Hello, I’m Debbie otherwise known as ChirpyDebs and thank you for stopping by my little corner of the internet. Now the children are all grown up I’m happiest when I’m out with the dogs or hiking a trail with my camera in hand. My blog is where I like to share photographs showing the wild beauty of Zakynthos that most people don’t get to see, recipes and other seemingly random things that come to mind.
    Debbie says:

Hi Sandee, it makes me wonder how I mastered English at all… Saying that though I did find myself getting slightly tongue-tied saying them out loud.

    xx
