I have been there but during daylight. The lighting in the night time photo adds so much more.
It was a place that gave me goose bumps when you reflect on it’s past.

I’ve been and my 2nd oldest went last year. I’d love to return as a side trip (with the primary trip being Venice, a place I still really want to see!).

As an architect I am always amazed at what mankind was able to accomplish with a minimum of equipment and a maximum of imagination.

The first time I visited the Colosseum was in 1990 and it absolutely blew me away. I could hear the roar of the ancient crowds and picture the spectacle of duelling gladiators. Last year, we went again (my husband is Italian and has family in the Rome area – lucky us!) and took an exclusive tour of the newly opened underground area. A history nerd’s paradise! They are in the middle of restoring the floor now. It’s already partially done and they hold concerts there. Isn’t that a fantastic venue? Thanks for hosting this link party once again. When I was 15 and going to school in Switzerland we took a trip to Rome. This was an amazing time for me and seeing the Colosseum in person and being able to wander through it was indeed memorable. Somewhere I have packed away photos of that day. Thanks Sandee for Wordless Wednesday!

Everything in Rome is amazing, and the Colosseum is no exception. The size of everything is also overwhelming. We spent several days there in 2010 after being there for only a day and a half a few years before that. With Sawyer, any kind of travel is now out of the question, so I am happy we have already traveled many, many “must see” places. Thanks for adding us to the hop. I’ve been there. Expected to be awed by it, instead too many people died there brutally and it has a bad feeling. History and real life- you just can’t make this stuff up!
No you can’t make this stuff up. I’ve never been there and will probably never make it there, but it has some very dark history. 🙂
