Rome: The Colosseum – “The Eternal City” is famous for its ancient architecture and rich history spanning 28 centuries. On your first day in the capital, walk to the famous Piazza Del Campidoglio, which was designed by Michelangelo and make your way to the Colosseum of Rome.
The Colosseum is the world’s largest amphitheatre, built over 1,900 years ago to host gladiatorial contests, executions, animal hunts and other gruesome spectacles. Even in its crumbling state, the Colosseum is a fearsome site to behold. Close your eyes and imagine the roars of more than 50,000 spectators as they watched all the battles and bloodshed. Gosh, that sounds a really cool place
Ummm, do you nose where I can buy tickets for the next event??????
Loves and licky kisses
Princess Leah xxx
If they replayed what they did in the height of this place I’m not sure we’d want to watch anything. Very brutal. Love and licky kisses back. 🙂
Beautifully shot photo would love to visit there and pose heheh!
Have a cornettotastic WWS ➡
I hear you. I’d love to go. Have a great WW too, Steve. 🙂
Granny has been there, but only around by car, when her sister still lived in Roma. It’s tremendous! Thank you for the remembrance, Sandee <3 Pawkisses for a Happy Wednesday🐾😽💞
Tremendous is a great adjective for this place. Happy Wednesday to you too, Little Binky. My best to your peeps. 🙂
I love Rome:)
I would love to see Rome and many places in Italy. 🙂
Amazing the events that were once held in this place. What a sight to see.
It would indeed be a sight to see. 🙂
I have been there but during daylight. The lighting in the night time photo adds so much more.
It was a place that gave me goose bumps when you reflect on it’s past.
I agree about the goosebumps. It has a bloody past. 🙂
My pet rock claims to have been there and was once throwd at a gladiator…
He probably was there. He does get around. 🙂
Every time I try to imagine the past events that took place there, it sends a chill down my spine. Very scary place.
I hear you, Nancy. A chilling past. 🙂
I’ve been and my 2nd oldest went last year. I’d love to return as a side trip (with the primary trip being Venice, a place I still really want to see!).
I hope you get to see Venice. That would be an amazing adventure. 🙂
It is really interesting in it’s poor state, maybe more so than when it was brand new.
I’m guessing it’s impressive today. I know I’d be impressed. 🙂
That is so cool, the peeps would love to see Rome.
We’d love to see it too. I doubt they would leave you kitties though. I don’t blame them. 🙂
That is impressive. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day! XO
It is most impressive. You’re welcome for the hosting. Have a great day as well, Ellen. 🙂
We’d love to go to Rome some day! The Colosseum is amazing, but its history is scary and chilling.
Thank you for hosting, Sandee. Have a wonderful Wednesday, my friend! 🙂
It is scary and chilling indeed. It was a brutal time. You have a wonderful Wednesday too. 🙂
That sure would be something to see. Sandee, you and Zane have a fine day.
It would indeed. You have a fine day too, Marg. 🙂
As an architect I am always amazed at what mankind was able to accomplish with a minimum of equipment and a maximum of imagination.
I agree with you on that point. Imagination is a wonderful and powerful tool. 🙂
The first time I visited the Colosseum was in 1990 and it absolutely blew me away. I could hear the roar of the ancient crowds and picture the spectacle of duelling gladiators. Last year, we went again (my husband is Italian and has family in the Rome area – lucky us!) and took an exclusive tour of the newly opened underground area. A history nerd’s paradise! They are in the middle of restoring the floor now. It’s already partially done and they hold concerts there. Isn’t that a fantastic venue? Thanks for hosting this link party once again. Have a great rest of the week!
You have the same kind of imagination as I do. I would love to see every inch. You have a great rest of the week too. 🙂
Lovely journey with you to Rome ~ thanks, Xox from me and Zoe ^_^
Happy Moments to you,
A ShutterBug Explores,
aka (A Creative Harbor)
You’re most welcome, Carol. Hope you’re feeling well again. Scritches and lovies to Ms. Zoe. 🙂
We can only imagine the brutality they enjoyed
Yes, we can only imagine. That works for me. 🙂
I’ve been there, many, many years ago (I would say close to 30 years!) and it’s magnificent.
I would think it would be magnificent. Standing after all these centuries. 🙂
Magnificant structure, indeed! Happy Wednesday!
Happy Wednesday to you too, Eugenia. 🙂
Looks good lit up at night. Wonder how it was lit up originally? Big torches I guess, or did they only open in the daytime?
I would guess most everything was done during the day. 🙂
Maybe but maybe not!
I have a wonderful rendition of this, restored to its original glory. Not sure I want to visit a place of so much violence, however, I understand there are cats…so, I’d go visit the cats!
I’d love to see this in person. It was a different time back then. As with all history. 🙂
Love this picture! We had a wonderful time visiting there in our travels.
You and Scott are well traveled too. Lucky you. 🙂
I have seen that Colosseum in person (and I just learned that I didn’t know how to spell it!)… Wow, it is incredible. I love your photo!
Lucky you. It is incredible indeed. 🙂
That used to be Shea Stadium in New York. It got ravaged after the Mets won the 1969 World Series.
You crack me up, Kismet. 🙂
That would sure be something to see, because of the architecture and history of the place, but I don’t like all those horrible shows they put on there.
Wishing you a happy Wednesday! <3
I hear you, but history it is. You have a happy Wednesday. 🙂
I would think that might seem kind of spooky at night, with all that went on there!
I would think so. Such history these walls hold. 🙂
It would be so cool to see this in person. I would love to go to Rome, what a dream come true that would be. Have a wonderful day Sandee. Love you bunches ❤
It would be a trip of a lifetime for sure. Love you bunches too, Jody. 🙂
Mom would love to see this magnificent structure in person!
I’m going to go with your mom. 🙂
i love ROme!
What’s not to love. 🙂
When I was 15 and going to school in Switzerland we took a trip to Rome. This was an amazing time for me and seeing the Colosseum in person and being able to wander through it was indeed memorable. Somewhere I have packed away photos of that day. Thanks Sandee for Wordless Wednesday!
Oh lucky you. Many have visited. I’m impressed with my readers. Well traveled. You’re most welcome, Kathe. 🙂
Definitely on our bucket list!
As it should be. Happy WW. 🙂
A visit to Rome is on my bucket list. But first, I have to recover physically and financially after my recent trip!!!
Happy WW, Sandee!
You’ll make it there I’m sure. Happy WW to you too. 🙂
Now those builders really knew what they were doing!!
Hugs Cecilia
Yes they did and they didn’t have all the technology as we do today. 🙂
Beautiful shot – I’ve only seen it in person in the daytime. If I ever get back to Rome, I’ll make it a point to see it at night.
I’ve not even been close. Perhaps one day. 🙂
Everything in Rome is amazing, and the Colosseum is no exception. The size of everything is also overwhelming. We spent several days there in 2010 after being there for only a day and a half a few years before that. With Sawyer, any kind of travel is now out of the question, so I am happy we have already traveled many, many “must see” places. Thanks for adding us to the hop. Big hugs, Janet and a special kitty kiss from Cooper Murphy.
Oh lucky you. You have traveled so much. Sending special kisses to both Cooper Murphy and Sawyer. 🙂
It’s easy to see why it’s a bucket-list type of place to visit. It looks incredibly impressive.x
I hear you. This is on my list for sure. 🙂
Ahhh!!! Our oldest grandbiped just had to build a replica of the Colosseum for her high school Latin class. It came out great too.
Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber
Oh how fun. I would have loved helping putting that together. 🙂
Such a beautiful and wonderful spot. A lovely pic. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
You’re most welcome, Patrick. Thanks for playing along. 🙂
It certainly would be great to spend a month or more exploring Rome.
It sure would. I would love to do the same. 🙂
Awww, bella Roma! You can have the universe if I can have Italy.
I can’t argue with that. 🙂
I’ve been there. Expected to be awed by it, instead too many people died there brutally and it has a bad feeling. History and real life- you just can’t make this stuff up!
No you can’t make this stuff up. I’ve never been there and will probably never make it there, but it has some very dark history. 🙂
Ohhh! I want to got there too!
I would love to visit here. I’ve read much about it’s history. It was a different time. 🙂
It’s amazing, and the only felines there now are the stray cats.
A good place for them to be. I’d bring kitty food for them. I’m guessing they are well fed. 🙂
Isn’t that one of the coolest looking places.?
It’s so massive and built with so little. It’s survived all these centuries. 🙂
Hi there Sandee! Just dropping by 🙂 so glad to know you are still blogging and thank you so much for visiting me (my site) always.
Motherhood has taken me over but I will try to post about our bundle of joy from time to time.
Love,
Rocks
I’m over the moon happy for you. Sending all three of you much love, especially your new bundle of joy. 🙂
I love the picture! I’m not sure I would like to go though, I hears lots of tourist and not too fun to think of what went on in there. Italy is still so beautifuls though!
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
History is history. We should all be taught the history of different places around the world. Perhaps then we won’t repeat that history. 🙂
Wow! That architecture paired with the lighting is breathtaking!
It is indeed, Holly. 🙂
The Colosseum is an awesome site in person but I do love the night shot of it.
I’ll never make it there, but it’s someplace I would have loved to see and explore. 🙂
