Heidelberg Castle is a ruin in Germany and landmark of Heidelberg. The castle ruins are among the most important Renaissance structures north of the Alps.

The castle has only been partially rebuilt since its demolition in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is located 80 metres (260 ft) up the northern part of the KΓΆnigstuhl hillside, and thereby dominates the view of the old downtown. It is served by an intermediate station on the Heidelberger Bergbahn funicular railway that runs from Heidelberg’s Kornmarkt to the summit of the KΓΆnigstuhl.

The earliest castle structure was built before 1214 and later expanded into two castles circa 1294; however, in 1537, a lightning bolt destroyed the upper castle. The present structures had been expanded by 1650, before damage by later wars and fires. In 1764, another lightning bolt caused a fire which destroyed some rebuilt sections. Source: Wikipedia

It looks beautiful all lit up. My first reaction was that it reminded me of when we sailed into Malta in the very early hours once. It looks nothing like Malta, but the lights brought back magical memories of seeing the old town lit up from the sea.

It sure does, Little Binky. I’ve not been there either and probably will never make it there, but I love to explore all the places that I can find right here on my computer. πŸ™‚

    • Sandee says:

You’ve sure traveled a lot. We’ve not been to very many places. You have a blessed and beautiful Wednesday too, my friend. πŸ™‚

    Interesting facts about the castle.

Thanks for sharing dear Sandee. Have a safe and sunny week ahead.
    Lots of love. <3

What a beautiful castle, and beautiful surroundings as well. I’m more of a country girl, but there is something about the lights of a city that attract me too!

    • Sandee says:

I’m not a big city girl either. I hate the big cities. I’m more of a country girl too and we live in a very small town. Doesn’t even have a stop light it’s so small. Works for us. πŸ™‚

Wow, that’s breathtaking! I bet it’s even more so in person. How are you doing, Sandee? I hope you are safe and well. Thank you, as always, for hosting. Happy Wednesday!

wow…what a beautiful castle! Hopefully soon we all can get in your boat….joking! Hopefully we all can be where we want to be very soon! xoxo

    • Sandee says:

We’re not going to the boat until all this is lifted. I don’t want to be accused of doing what I want. Not worth it. Love you. πŸ™‚

  7. The OP Pack says:

That is a beautiful castle. Mom is always amazed at all the beautiful castles and churches that were built throughout Europe many years ago without all the fancy equipment we have now.

  8. Valentine says:

Mom says, “That looks like a wonderful castle to tour. I’ve seen several in Europe but I haven’t yet traveled to Germany. Maybe someday. Thanks for sharing.” Winks.

  9. Ann Thompson says:

Well isn’t that pretty. That would be a nice place to visit. I think I’ll have to settle for traveling from my computer chair though so I thank you for the mini vacation πŸ™‚

    • Sandee says:

Many are missing vacations all over the world. We cancelled all our travel plans this year. I can’t imagine sleeping in a hotel room. No, just no. πŸ™‚
