Today hubby is going to write about two instances that we both believe was Little Bit letting her dad know that she was alright.
The Dream
November 8, 2015 I dreamed about Little Bit. Sandee and I (My Darlin’ Sandee is almost always in my dreams) took our Little Bit hunting. Little Bit loved to bird hunt when she was younger and I hunted over her for years until she came up with a serious soft tissue injury to her left front leg in the shoulder. I have lots of stories about her hunting exploits. And other stories as well.
The field in my dream was very tall wheat, corn tall but wheat and vast fields with dirt roads in between the fields. Little Bit took off running to hunt the fields and disappeared in the wheat while Darlin’ and I stayed on a road and waited for her. It was getting dark and I began to call for her, “Little Bit! Little Bit! Little Bit!
After a time a man came up, who I took as the owner of the property and he said to us, “She will not be coming back.”
On the same day of the dream we boated back from our trip and were in our slip reading. Suddenly at 4:20pm I became very sleepy and Darlin’ suggested I lie down for a short nap.
At 4:40pm a noise woke me up and in the corner of our berth a deep red butterfly was flying in a small repeating pattern. I decided that I needed to get up and get a soft towel and help the butterfly back outside. But when I got the towel, I couldn’t find the butterfly. I told Darlin’ of the incident and she said that Little Bit was visiting me.
I have thought deeply about this and here are my beliefs:
The Butterfly
Georgia and Duffy Langford are our dear friends and one of their mentors told them during her last illness that after her passing, when they see a butterfly it will be her. Little Bit was there when we all had that conversation.
The Butterfly is a symbol of growth and transcendence as it changes from the caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Death, burial, resurrection.
Me and Little Bit watching the fish together. Little Bit was around three years old in this photograph. Georgia took the picture from their boat and they had it framed with the butterfly frame.
The Time
When we were at work we used the 10 code for radio transmissions. The code for various death issues included 44 in the suffix. I was awakened at 4:40pm.
The Color
Although she was a mostly black haired dog, when she was young and vibrant, in the sun if I fanned the hair on the top of her head, it would show a deep red color. The same color as the visiting Butterfly.
She was the best dog I’ve ever been owned by. Darlin’ says it is because we spent almost her entire life constantly with her, but I truly believe she was special. She is in the fields now hunting, running, sticking her nose in gofer holes, chasing rabbits and barking at cats. Healthy, pain free and red headed.
So what are you most thankful for today?

I'm thankful for friends like Sandee, my son and family. Plus, to have been a part in the life of my son's Golden Retriever, “Wendy" who passed away in 2001. I was a single mother and I know people think I'm a bit off my rocker when I say she helped me rear my son, but she did. I truly do not know how I would have managed without her.
Your story is exceptionally moving, and I haven't any doubt that somehow Little Bit knows what you wrote and was that butterfly. There are just certain things we can be sure of, and I believe your incredible "Little Bit" is always with the two of you. She was as lucky to have the two of you, as you were to have her, and I believe you will see her again. Until then, trust your dreams and keep dreaming.
Much love Sandee to you and yours,
Plus, a big bear hug- :))
I know she is comforting both of us, but mostly my husband. That was his girl. She loved me, but he was the alpha. 🙂
I have a cousin whose husband just passed at 41 (blood clot after a surgery). She voiced similar things that let her say goodbye to her husband, including a dream and a butterfly she swore looked camaflouge. 🙂 I had a very hard time getting over my grandma's loss until I saw her in a dream that was so real that it did seem like an actual, 'I'm okay, see you later' type of thing. I'm glad your husband had the dream and the butterfly. 🙂
lol at my spelling!! Sandee, it's 5 in the morning, so I get a pass on that one, yes? 'camouflage'
I believe somehow they let us know it's okay to not grieve so much. It's comforting. 🙂
I knew what you meant Rosey. 🙂
How blessed you all were to have each other!
big hugs xoxo
Yes indeed Barb, yes indeed. 🙂
I am thankful for the pets that I have had in my life. Each one, like friends, has brought a unique personality, love, and joy into my life. We haven't had a fur buddy for several years now, partly because the last cocker spaniel was so special and partly because I am reluctant to take on the responsibility of another pet. I do love dogs because they seem to need our companionship as much as we need theirs.
They do need us so don't they. Such warm memories. 🙂
My word. Not only is this a sweet post about dear Little Bit, but it also shows how much the two of you treasure each other. Together you will mourn and remember and heal from the loss.
Today I am thankful for a solid house. The wind is howling outside, but I'm cozy inside.
That is exactly what we are doing Christine. 🙂
Oh Zane, what a wonderful post about the butterfly and Little Bit. It sure all makes a lot of sense. Some dogs and or cats too are just very special. I don't have a clue wjy some are more special than other but they just are. I have had some very special dogs and some very special cats. and some very special horses and donkeys. I think it does have a lot to do with how big a part of your life the particular animal takes part. Sandee, you and Zane have a wonderful day. Little Bit is watching over you.
I know she is letting us know she's okay. She's well now and pain free and running in the fields with all the other special babies that have crossed the bridge. 🙂
Today i am grateful my Sweetie ironed his own shirt, since i have to go to work. There is always someone and something to be grateful about, and i'm glad you feel your precious dog has sent you comfort in this way.
We are happy about that too.
Bless your hubbies heart. 🙂
I'm thankful for having read that wonderful story. Thank you Zane. When I lost my Bruno years ago, I felt he was always around me also. The big thing was that I could still smell him. I guess, he'll always be around me. Thanks ago for your personal stories.
Have a thankful Thursday Sandee & Zane. See ya.
Cruisin Paul
Posting about her helps me more than you know. It's the acknowledgement of how precious she was to us. 🙂
My mother was a great lover of butterflies, and the color blue. Yep, not long after her death, a beautiful, pale blue butterfly visited me. I still smile and say Hi Mother to any butterfly that I see. Sweet memories of your precious Little Bit are meant to warm your heart, not make you sad.
Big hugs to you both, honey…
I see this is far more common that I thought. Excellent. 🙂
First off I love your husband and that he calls you his Darlin'. What a wonderful conpliment. Now to the dreams, yes that was for sure your Little Bit sending you messages. For years I have had such dreams when someone I love has passed and they are real. The butterfly – what an amazing experience! Having such experiences definitely helps the healing procress.
It's helping me, but hubby is having a hard time. I cry a lot and he is holding it in. We each have our own way of grieving. 🙂
Hi dear Sandee, I believe that Marissa's comment with all the sex links is spam.
This is such a sweet post and I agree with Jennifer, I also love that your husband calls you 'Darlin'.' 🙂
It was spam and it's gone. That's the first thing I look for when I check my blog. Spam.
I love that my husband calls me Darlin' too. 🙂
You and your husband are such a loving couple and Little Bit is so blessed to spend her life with you both. Grateful to have you as my blogging friend! Have a beautiful day, Sandee!
Thank you so much Nancy. You're a great blogging friend too. 🙂
I absolutely believe that was Little Bit letting you know she's okay. I totally get it because I've been through this with Sadie. Thank you for sharing that story – even though I'm sitting here with leaky eyes again! Hugs to both of you!
I didn't want you to have leaky eyes, but I knew you're get this. 🙂
What a wonderful tribute to Little Bit and the two people who loved her most. I believe in the butterfly symbolism and what your red butterfly had come to tell you. I've have a similar butterfly experience regarding my husband. Every since he died I go see the butterflies in bloom exhibit on his birthday and there has always been a blue one that will come land on me.
What a touching story about your butterfly. I'm guessing many of us are visited by a butterfly. 🙂
All dogs are wonderful, but there is always that one great dog. Mine was a black lab.
Ours was Little Bit. Thanks for weighing in Joe. 🙂
Thank you Annie for this post in honor of Little Bit: The Other Side Of Heaven 🙂
Please go read Annie's wonderful post. It applies to not only our pets, but how precious everything and everyone is in our lives. 🙂
Zane- your story brought tears to my eyes. Simply lovely and now give your darlin' a big hug from me, my sweetie and of course Lucy!
Awww, thanks Kathe. I love the hug and you know I love Miss Lucy. 🙂
Aww! Sandee that was lovely what a nice tribute and beautifully written :-f
Have a beautifullytastic day 🙂
Thank you Steve. Hubby does write very well. 🙂
I Love You My Darlin'. We love you our Little Bit.
Your Loving Husband.
I love you too honey. We do love you Little Bit. 🙂
We're worried about our friends in Richmond (VA not CA) who are going through what you recently endured with LB and we did in December with Kyla.
I remember your struggles. You still struggle. I'm guessing we will for a very long time too. 🙂
what an incredibly beautiful post! It made me smile and cry at the same time. I have no doubt that "Lil Bit" visited you, I truly believe with all of my heart that she did. I am so glad you shared this with us (((hugs))) and love DakotasDen
Thanks Caren. Our babies embed themselves to deeply in our hearts don't they. I sure miss our Little Bit. 🙂
Aww…I just gave extra love to my little Shelby, who is with me 24/7 now that I work from home. I can totally relate to getting more attached when you're around your dog all the time, as opposed to going to work all day. I do believe that the deceased communicate with us through our dreams. I've heard too many stories to convince me otherwise.
I agree Stephanie. I know our Little Bit sent us both those messages. 🙂
Nice story from Hubby. Dreams are a marvelous invention we were made with. I seldom remember mine but if it was a striking one like this I would remember it. Saying that, I have never that I know dreamt of Adi or Katrin. Duno.
I do believe that dogs will ALL go to Heaven. Roman's 8:19-21 (if one considers the Bible to be the expert on going to Heaven) "(19) For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.( 20) For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope (21) that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God (which I believe to be Heaven when Jesus returns to Earth). 😀
..
and of course dogs are a part of the 'creation'
..
I agree Jim. I believe the same. 🙂
Yes, our dogs and cats are a part of the creation. 🙂
I love visiting with loved ones that passed in my dreams. They are never gone. Scientifically proven in that energy is neither created nor destroyed. Always with you.
I've not done this but Zane has. I guess I'm not wired quite right. 🙂
What an awesome post. I does sound like Little Bit was sending a message.
That's what we think Ann. We are convinced she let us know she's okay. 🙂
I love to read this post. Sometimes there is more between heaven and earth than you might think.
I believe there is more between heaven and earth than we can know or understand fully. 🙂
I always love your Thursday posts. I do agree, they let us know they are okay. While this is a beautiful post, I have to admit my favorite part was at the beginning when he called you darlin Sandee and said you are almost always in his dreams. So sweet.
He does call me darlin' all the time. 🙂
I found your husband's post very moving. It's not easy to make me misty eyed… there must've been something in my eye 😉
Seriously, I'm glad you both find comfort in these signs. Little Bit will not be gone as long as her memory lives in your hearts. May the red butterfly visit often as a gentle reminder that your memory lives on in Little Bit's heart as well.
Zane has always been able to write or speak in such a way that makes one misty eyed.
We hope she returns often for a visit. We miss her ever so much. 🙂
You both must be missing her a lot. Such a very moving post.
We are missing her so very much. 🙂
There are a lot of things that we just don't understand. I hope Little Bit continues to visit you.
We do too Binky. It's bittersweet, but we love her so. 🙂
I'm thankful that I may not have an extravagant life but I have more than enough with the love of family and friends surrounding me. 🙂
And that is all that any of us needs. 🙂
