Thankful Thursday

Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play on the computer, until 4 AM, or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will.

I will walk the beach, in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves, with abandon, if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And, eventually, I remember the important things.

Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s beloved pet dies? But broken hearts are what give us strength, and understanding, and compassion. A heart never broken, is pristine, and sterile, and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be.

And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

What are you thankful for today?

I'm thankful just for still being here. Lately many of my friends and former people I went to school with have started to pass away and I'm still here. Thank you God for allowing me to see another day and being able to enjoy the love of my life, my wife. How much longer, I'm not sure but I'm going to enjoy each day.
Have an enjoyable Thursday Sandee & Zane. See ya.

I'm with you on your wonderful attitude about aging. To paraphrase T.S. Eliot… We grow old… we grow old… we shall wear our trousers rolled.

Today I'm grateful for my family's safe return from their long weekend trip to Cape Cod and grateful that my knee is improving.

That was a wonderful post. I am thankful to still wake up every morning, thankful for getting to Skype with my grandchildren every day, thankful for my new flip flops, and really thankful that warm weather is on its way.

I have always known I was old way before my time. I've never turned a dessert down. 🙂
I used to have a cartoon hanging on our fridge. It was of an elderly lady, and it said something along the lines of "I'm not going to grow old gracefully. I'm going to be wrinkled, carrying a few extra pounds, and sliding into my grave yelling Woohoo! That was quite a ride!" Reminds me of you. 🙂 It's how I'm going to be, too.

I am thankful for the time in which I have lived. I believe that my parents were indeed the greatest generation and the result was that my generation will have lived during the "Golden Age" of America. The cars of our youth were the most fun. Everyone wants a '57 Chevy or '65 Mustang. 40 years from now, who's going to want a 2014 Prius? Our high schools experiences were the best. No closed campuses, no lock downs, no mass shootings, just "Happy Days". We played little league baseball with our friends. We didn't have travel ball, travel soccer, travel volleyball so that we looked like professional teams. We had all the competition we needed withing 10 miles of us. Most of us grew up with a one car family. If we had a second car it was several years old and turning sixteen was not the right of passage to a brand new set of wheels. I am ever grateful for the life that I have been given and the time that I was given to live in. Thank you Lord.
