Silly Sunday

Sunday is the place to come for weekly laughs. The rules are simple, just have fun.

This is a great opportunity to get to know other bloggers and have a laugh or two in the process. Here is how it works: Laugh and Link Up!

Only in America:

A jury of her peers awarded a woman from Austin, Texas, USA $780,000 after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running amok inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving child was the woman’s own son.

A 19 year old youth from Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran his hand over with a Honda Accord. The young man apparently didn’t notice someone was at the wheel of the car whose hubcap he was trying to steal.

A thief from Bristol, PA, was leaving a house he had robbed through the garage. He was not able to get the garage door to go up, the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn’t re-enter the house because the door connecting the house and garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family was on vacation, so the robber. found himself locked in the garage for eight days. He subsisted on a case of Pepsi he found, and a large bag of dry dog food. This upset the thief, so he sued the homeowner’s insurance claiming the situation caused him undue mental anguish. The jury agreed to the tune of half a million dollars and change.

A Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to pay a woman from Lancaster, PA, $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her coccyx. The beverage was on the floor because the woman had thrown it at her boyfriend thirty seconds earlier during an argument.

A woman from Claymont, Delaware, successfully sued the owner of a night club in a neighbouring city when she fell from the bathroom window to the floor and knocked out her two front teeth. This occurred while she was trying to sneak through the window in the lady’s room to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge. She was awarded $12,000 and dental expenses.

Tell me exactly how these people got away with this because if I were ever to try and sue someone for something so ridiculous I would never get away with it.

  2. Barb says:

Lawyers write the laws and then they just sit back and count on the voters and jurers… to be extry stupid. They are usually not disappointed.

Happy Sundee, Sandee! big hugs x0x0

Oh there are ambulance chaser all over the place. We have a local firm here that's going after ADA issues in businesses. They have closed many in the terrible economy. 🙂

  3. Marg says:

That sounds about right to me that things that ridiculous can happen . Got to have a super lawyer to have that happen and just what did the lawyer make.
Anyway, Sandee, you have a fantastic day and Zane and Little Bit too.

  4. Paul Pietrangelo says:

These have to be jokes, aren't they? The lawyers, judges and juries have to crazy to agree to these. If so, crooks are always going to the winners.
Have a great Sunday Sandee. Hi to everyone near you ( Zane & Little Bits ) See ya.

  5. Jean R. says:

If these stories are true and I have no reason to believe they're not, then there are a lot of jurists who should be ashamed of themselves. The ones that really get me is the ones about the guy in locked in the garage, the lady in the furniture store and the lady who slipped on the food that she threw on the floor.

  6. cube says:

The litigiousness of our society knows no bounds and neither does the imbecility of some juries. American jurisprudence could stand some improvement to prevent these injustices from happening.

  7. Marcia Shaw Wyatt says:

These are completely ridiculous, Sandee. I'm sure they're all true – and they're so crazy that I had to laugh at them. What a joke these lawsuits make of our legal system! Sad but true and nuts! Hope you have a wonderful day my friend! Happy Sunday! 🙂

  8. mail4rosey says:

Too bad the people w/the garage weren't going on a 3-month vacation. Just saying… 🙂

These kinds of cases are so ridiculous, worse when you know someone who suffered through one (and I do).

  9. Tony McGurk says:

While this is laughable & crazy this is the sort of mentality in our judicial systems that turns a blind eye to crime when they let criminals off with minor punishments for crime such as a few weeks community service or a small fine.

    • Comedy Plus says:

In California they are emptying the prisons out and putting them back to the counties and then they have to release most of them because of federal law suits. It's crazy here. 🙁

  10. MNL says:

hopefully those decisions were appealed. you shouldn’t have to keep your house safe for burglars. makes no sense. and if someone throws a drink, they shouldn’t be able to sue if they slip on their own thrown drink — seems like that would open the door for any idiot to make money off of a restaurant by throwing a drink and trying to slip on it.
