A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water everyone expected they’d be asked the “half empty or half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: “How heavy is this glass of water?”
Answers called out ranged from 8 to 20 ounces.
She replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.
She continues, “The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed and incapable of doing anything.”
Remember to put the glass down.

Interesting, but I am not sure if this science transfers equally if the glass is full of a lovely cabernet. 😉
big hugs xoxo
Everything changes when there is wine. All bets are off. 🙂
This is wise words d-)
Very wise words Laika. 🙂
I can't even hold a glass of beer for that long i tend too tilt it towards my mouth 🙂
Have a watertastic day Sandee ;-h
I've that problem with champagne or wine. 🙂
Good to know that I don't have to hold a glass of water for a whole day. Just have to remember to only stress for a few minutes. That actually does make sense. Sandee, you and Zane and Little Bit have a fantastic Tuesday.
Stress does us no good at all. Got to put down the glass and the stress. 🙂
Great point, now I just have to share with with Mr D. a recent quad bypass guy, he is always stressing.
Have a great day!
Please do. There are so many things that are completely out of our control. 🙂
No, raise the glass. I thought that what happy hour was about.
Amen to that. I love me a good happy hour or two. 🙂
That's really a great story to teach a lesson about stress. Thanks for sharing it.
It is indeed Jean. My buddy Phil is a wise man. 🙂
Cool … I'm stealing this for a friend. c-)
Please do Odie. A great reminder. 🙂

I was thinking about you when I heard about that blizzard hitting your area. Stay warm and safe. 🙂
I'll drink to that! Joking aside- she makes an excellent point! No sense in dwelling on
stuff… have a super duper day!
Exactly. Someday we'll share some wine together. 🙂
Waiting for a punch line, and got a nice bit of philosophy instead.
I see you are setting us up for the next story.
I mess with everyone once in a while and actually post something that has some meaning. 🙂
There's a lot of truth in her theory!
Tons and tons of truth. 🙂
Very wise and something we should all remember!
Happy Tortie Tuesday Sandee! Smooches to Little Bit!
Sometimes I forget this. I too need to always remember this. 🙂

Good for you honey. You're smarter than the average bear and then some. 🙂
THANK YOU FOR THAT REMINDER!
I think most of us needed reminded. You're most welcome. 😉
Yes! And in the case of this old church lady, i lay them at the feet of Jesus. Good reminder, i need to go do that more often.
Yes indeed. 🙂
Wise words. I have to remember that lesson.
I remind myself often. 🙂
That is so true and a great reminder to just let go
Letting go is difficult for some of us at times, but so necessary. 🙂
Great wisdom, but I laughed at Barb's comment.
Big hugs, honey…
I laughed at her comment too. Wish we could all share some wine. That would be wonderful. 🙂
Holy cow. That is SO SERIOUS and SO SO SO WISE AND TRUE. WOW. I really want to remember this – such good advice.
We all need a reminder Katherine. I do often. 🙂
I need to put the glass down.
We all do from time to time. 🙂
My pet rocks says the prof should have used a Dixie Cup. My pet rock missed the point…but won't have a sore arm.
Seymour is smarter than the average rock you know. He's always right. 🙂
Great analogy!
It is indeed. 🙂
Great advice Sandee. But does it change if the glass is half full or half empty?
Nope, either way it's the same. 🙂
