Musée du Louvre, Paris

Annual Visitors: 9,334,000

The world’s largest museum is both the subject of ongoing architectural controversy—not everyone agrees with the 1989 addition of I. M. Pei’s 69-foot-high glass pyramid entrance—and an art-lover’s wonderland of some 35,000 masterworks. Throngs parade through the former 12th-century palace to see such famous highlights as Leonardo da Vinci’s smiling La Gioconda, a.k.a. Mona Lisa—a painting that, rumor has it, was originally commissioned by François I to hang in his château at Fontainebleau.

It is a lovely photo but it always seemed strange to me that they have that glass pyramid on such a beautiful old building. I would have thought it better to have it as a stand alone building or part of a more modern museum. Yes, it is iconic but to me it will always look out of place.

I think most of those 9 million visitors were there on the day I wanted to visit. At least that’s what it felt like.

The pyramid does look out of place in front of that amazing old building

    • Sandee
      February 6, 2019 4:11 pm at 4:11 pm

Yes it does, but if we all think of it as a piece of art then it’s not as bad. 🙂

  5. February 6, 2019 2:01 am at 2:01 am

When we looked at the picture, we didn’t noticed the piramide in the first place, I think we saw right through it…MOL 😀 It’s a beautiful place, it doesn’t need a pyramide at all 😺 Pawkisses for a Happy Wordless Wednesday 🐾😽💞

I would love to return on a family trip with all of my kids. I don’t mind the pyramid. I.M. Pei did the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame building too, which looks like one big pyramid in part. I like that too. 🙂

We really enjoyed the Louvre when we visited in person. The pyramid did seem a bit odd, but in person, I kind of felt like “it worked.” 🙂

Sandee, thank you for sharing this great, memory sparking photo. And thank you for hosting! Have a great Wednesday!

  11. February 6, 2019 4:09 am at 4:09 am

I have to say, the museum looks cool, and the pyramid looks super cool, but they do not go together. Last time my mom was at that museum the pyramid was not there.

    • Sandee
      February 6, 2019 4:08 pm at 4:08 pm

I don’t think they go together either, but no one asked me. It’s what it is. 🙂

I am one of those not in agreement with the 1989 addition of I. M. Pei’s 69-foot-high glass pyramid entrance at the Louvre. I would’ve much preferred a cube 😉

The pyramid is a stunning structure but seems out of place against the existing old building. But, then I guess it’s another one of those “art is in the eye of the beholder” things. Happy Wednesday!

    • Sandee
      February 6, 2019 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm

Art is in the eye of the beholder and often I’ve not a clue what their piece is trying to portray. 🙂

      • February 7, 2019 12:49 pm at 12:49 pm

        Yep, I agree.

    February 6, 2019 6:30 am at 6:30 am

Blending the old with the new takes genius and creativity. To me this blend does not work but they don’t care much what I think.

    • Sandee
      February 6, 2019 4:03 pm at 4:03 pm

Yes it does and that’s something I don’t have. I know no one cares what I think either. 🙂

  22. February 6, 2019 6:37 am at 6:37 am

I suppose that if the Pei addition appeared to be physically attached to the original structure then it would be appropriate to more closely match the existing facade. However, if you view the glass pyramid as simply the largest outdoor sculpture at the museum it is a little easier to understand. Personally, I would rather see this complete departure of style than to try to match the existing masterpiece and fall woefully short. Have a blessed day.

  24. February 6, 2019 6:54 am at 6:54 am

The pyramid is kinda incongruous. Oh well, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

    Happy WW, Sandee!

    • Sandee

Yes, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 🙂

The modern building does not blend in well with the old buildings.

    • Sandee
      February 6, 2019 4:01 pm at 4:01 pm

I wouldn’t think so either, but wasn’t in charge. Sometimes you never quite know the why. 🙂

  26. February 6, 2019 8:01 am at 8:01 am

I didn’t like the glass pyramid at first, but I have come to like it as a modern contrast to the classic old building.

    • Sandee
      February 6, 2019 4:00 pm at 4:00 pm

It’s all in ones perspective. Thanks for weighing in. 🙂

  27. February 6, 2019 8:03 am at 8:03 am

It seems out of place, to me. When we visited The Louvre in 1966, it wasn’t there and looked much better without it. Happy #WW to you. Thanks for hosting this link party!

I’m thinking I would like to see it someplace other than here too. Takes away from the history. You’re most welcome for the hosting. 🙂

  28. February 6, 2019 8:05 am at 8:05 am

Each time I see this place it reminds me of The Da Vinci Code movie. I love the book and was excited to watch the movie. Am glad it didn’t disappoint.

I’m sure the glass pyramid looks awesome in person, but to me it doesn’t look right in that setting with the old traditional buildings.

I know, but I’d love to see both. 🙂

  30. February 6, 2019 9:00 am at 9:00 am

It’s such an impressive place! While the pyramid is pretty cool, I also feel it just doesn’t fit in with the old building.
I wonder how long it takes to actually see everything in there?

    • Sandee
      February 6, 2019 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm

It appears never. It’s huge and I’m sure they change some things often. 🙂

  31. February 6, 2019 9:07 am at 9:07 am

Such an incredible place. I wonder how long it would take to look around all of the masterpieces, you could be in there for hours and never fully appreciate the beauty. I actually quite like the pyramid, though I can see why some find it too contemporary and ill-fitting. x

    • Sandee
      February 6, 2019 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm

I didn’t check but I think that I. M. Pei is also the architect who designed the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. It’s a pyramid just like the one featured above! Have a great day! xxoxoxo

You are correct about that. He did do the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. 🙂

  34. February 6, 2019 10:14 am at 10:14 am
