Silly Sunday

Sunday is the place to come for weekly laughs. The rules are simple, just have fun.

This is a great opportunity to get to know other bloggers and have a laugh or two in the process. Here is how it works: Laugh and Link Up!

Only in America:

A jury of her peers awarded a woman from Austin, Texas, USA $780,000 after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running amok inside a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving child was the woman’s own son.

A 19 year old youth from Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran his hand over with a Honda Accord. The young man apparently didn’t notice someone was at the wheel of the car whose hubcap he was trying to steal.

A thief from Bristol, PA, was leaving a house he had robbed through the garage. He was not able to get the garage door to go up, the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn’t re-enter the house because the door connecting the house and garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family was on vacation, so the robber. found himself locked in the garage for eight days. He subsisted on a case of Pepsi he found, and a large bag of dry dog food. This upset the thief, so he sued the homeowner’s insurance claiming the situation caused him undue mental anguish. The jury agreed to the tune of half a million dollars and change.

A Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to pay a woman from Lancaster, PA, $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her coccyx. The beverage was on the floor because the woman had thrown it at her boyfriend thirty seconds earlier during an argument.

A woman from Claymont, Delaware, successfully sued the owner of a night club in a neighbouring city when she fell from the bathroom window to the floor and knocked out her two front teeth. This occurred while she was trying to sneak through the window in the lady’s room to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge. She was awarded $12,000 and dental expenses.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:04 am

There are so many cases like these that are true. Makes you scratch your head. πŸ™‚

  2. March 22, 2015 at 3:03 am

Oh no! Even in America?!!! ;o)

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:05 am

      Yes, even in America. πŸ™‚

Tell me exactly how these people got away with this because if I were ever to try and sue someone for something so ridiculous I would never get away with it.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:05 am

These aren't true, but many similar cases have turned out like these. πŸ™‚

  4. March 22, 2015 at 4:00 am

Lawyers write the laws and then they just sit back and count on the voters and jurers… to be extry stupid. They are usually not disappointed.

Happy Sundee, Sandee! big hugs x0x0

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:05 am

Yep, it's a chess game in court and often the best player wins even if they are wrong. πŸ™‚

  5. March 22, 2015 at 4:03 am

Are these for real? Actually, these are the kinds of America stories that make our news.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:06 am

No, these are meant to be silly. Made up stuff. πŸ™‚

  6. March 22, 2015 at 4:55 am

Barb is spot on. This would not happen on my watch!

    Big hugs, honey..

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:06 am

It wouldn't happen on my watch either. πŸ™‚

  7. March 22, 2015 at 5:00 am

What upsets me is that there are actually attorneys who will represent these people!

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:07 am

Oh there are ambulance chaser all over the place. We have a local firm here that's going after ADA issues in businesses. They have closed many in the terrible economy. πŸ™‚

  8. March 22, 2015 at 5:17 am

That sounds about right to me that things that ridiculous can happen . Got to have a super lawyer to have that happen and just what did the lawyer make.
Anyway, Sandee, you have a fantastic day and Zane and Little Bit too.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:07 am

The lawyer always gets a big hunk of change in these cases. I'm not sure what the standard percentage it, but it's up there. πŸ™‚

  9. March 22, 2015 at 5:35 am

These have to be jokes, aren't they? The lawyers, judges and juries have to crazy to agree to these. If so, crooks are always going to the winners.
Have a great Sunday Sandee. Hi to everyone near you ( Zane & Little Bits ) See ya.

    Cruisin Paul

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:08 am

Yes, they are made up Paul. It's Silly Sunday you know. πŸ™‚

  10. March 22, 2015 at 6:20 am

If these stories are true and I have no reason to believe they're not, then there are a lot of jurists who should be ashamed of themselves. The ones that really get me is the ones about the guy in locked in the garage, the lady in the furniture store and the lady who slipped on the food that she threw on the floor.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:08 am

These aren't true, but there are many that are and are just as stupid as these. πŸ™‚

  11. March 22, 2015 at 6:30 am

The litigiousness of our society knows no bounds and neither does the imbecility of some juries. American jurisprudence could stand some improvement to prevent these injustices from happening.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:11 am

Yes, a lot of folks in America are sue happy. Terribly so. πŸ™‚

  12. March 22, 2015 at 6:46 am

Who do I sue for being laid off 4 times in the last 4 years of the "Obama Recovery".

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:11 am

You probably don't have a case Tim. I'm just saying. πŸ™‚

  13. March 22, 2015 at 6:54 am

Totally awful verdicts and as an American, definitely an embarrassment.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:12 am

Yes, and yet the courts are full of these people. πŸ™‚

  14. March 22, 2015 at 6:55 am

These are completely ridiculous, Sandee. I'm sure they're all true – and they're so crazy that I had to laugh at them. What a joke these lawsuits make of our legal system! Sad but true and nuts! Hope you have a wonderful day my friend! Happy Sunday! πŸ™‚

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:12 am

Ridiculous and not true Marcia. But there are many cases just as ridiculous that are true. πŸ™‚

  15. March 22, 2015 at 7:47 am

good god….unbelievable that a judge would even hear such cases let alone juries decide for these idiotic people.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:13 am

Oh the cases I've heard over the years. Simply amazing. πŸ™‚

  16. March 22, 2015 at 8:00 am

    The judges got kickbacks.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:13 am

I don't know if that happened or not, but I'm guessing in some places they do. πŸ™‚

  17. March 22, 2015 at 8:03 am

unreal! Have a Super Sunday! xoxo

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:13 am

      It is unreal Caren. πŸ™‚

  18. March 22, 2015 at 8:08 am

Really? Are these for real? If so, I'm afraid for the future of our country…

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:14 am

No, they aren't for real Stephanie. I'm still afraid for the future of our country though. πŸ™‚

  19. March 22, 2015 at 9:00 am

Fortunately, according to Snopes these stories are a hoax, although there are many true lawsuits almost as ridiculous.

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:14 am

I know and you're the only one that checked Joe. I'm not surprised about that either. I get a lot of stuff from Snopes. πŸ™‚

  20. March 22, 2015 at 10:09 am

And to think some people wonder why their insurance premiums are so high. c-)

    • March 22, 2015 at 11:15 am

Well, this is why Odie. πŸ™‚

  21. March 22, 2015 at 12:04 pm

Too bad the people w/the garage weren't going on a 3-month vacation. Just saying… πŸ™‚

These kinds of cases are so ridiculous, worse when you know someone who suffered through one (and I do).

    • March 22, 2015 at 12:17 pm

He would have stunk up the garage more than he did. I get it though. πŸ™‚

    • March 23, 2015 at 5:05 am

That's right! They should have sued him for stinking up their garage!! Great counter action move there, Sandee!!

    • March 23, 2015 at 10:27 am

Yes they should have. So many thugs running around our area anymore. California where there are very few consequences to ones illegal behavior. πŸ™

  22. March 22, 2015 at 4:21 pm

    Unbelievable =D>

    • March 22, 2015 at 5:27 pm

      Well, that's because it's not true. πŸ™‚

  23. March 22, 2015 at 7:28 pm

Are you SERIOUS!!??? That is CRAZY. My favorite is the kid who tripped the mom… and the throwing a drink. Hysterical!

    • March 23, 2015 at 6:25 am

No, these aren't true, but there are other cases that are just as stupid that are true. πŸ™‚

  24. March 22, 2015 at 8:50 pm

    Unbelievable Sandee..that's so silly!!

And I have an entry for this week πŸ™‚

    • March 23, 2015 at 6:25 am

Well it was Silly Sunday yesterday. πŸ™‚

  25. March 23, 2015 at 1:31 pm

You have got to be kidding me! Sheesh, it's no wonder our country is going broke with dumb lawsuit wins like this πŸ™‚

    • March 23, 2015 at 2:18 pm

These aren't true Jennifer, but there are so many silly cases that are true. πŸ™‚

  26. March 24, 2015 at 11:28 am

While this is laughable & crazy this is the sort of mentality in our judicial systems that turns a blind eye to crime when they let criminals off with minor punishments for crime such as a few weeks community service or a small fine.

    • March 24, 2015 at 12:03 pm

In California they are emptying the prisons out and putting them back to the counties and then they have to release most of them because of federal law suits. It's crazy here. πŸ™

hopefully those decisions were appealed. you shouldn’t have to keep your house safe for burglars. makes no sense. and if someone throws a drink, they shouldn’t be able to sue if they slip on their own thrown drink — seems like that would open the door for any idiot to make money off of a restaurant by throwing a drink and trying to slip on it.
